Sonic The Hedgehog Surpasses Detective Pikachu To Become Highest-Grossing Video Game Movie (therichest.com) 45

Sonic the Hedgehog's latest weekend total allowed it to surpass Detective Pikachu and become the highest-grossing video game movie ever in the US. TheRichest reports: Sonic has now amassed $145.8 million domestically, while Detective Pikachu managed $144.1 million by the end of its run. Sonic has definitely taken a hit as it only brought in $2.58 million last weekend to limp past Detective Pikachu's record. As for the worldwide record, it seems as if that will belong to Detective Piakchu for the foreseeable future. That's the one element of Sonic's success that has been affected by the worldwide pandemic we are in the midst of. The movie's release has been delayed in China and as it stands as brought in $306.5 million worldwide. That's a long way off the $433 million record set by Detective Pikachu.

I'm guessing it will be however long it takes for the coronavirus to no longer be a threat.

It's more to do with being released with little competition and Pikachu being a bad movie. Also the hype about how the original character design was so bad may have helped it.

The movie has a fair amount of politics in it but I suppose the kids don't really notice. It's very pro-cop and anti-military, for example. Pikachu actually had a lot less of that but it just wasn't a good movie overall.

    • There is a flip side to this too. The people often do not know what they want, and what they say they want isn't actually it.

If we look what is generally considered innovative companies (or look at the times when they were considered innovative), Apple, Google, Tesla. They tend to product products that is outside the public's expectation. The Glass Square of a phone with no keyboard, seems to be all bad decisions. which is now the most popular phone design.

    • You have a point. But there's a problem on both sides. If Hollywood starts listening to fans for everything, it essentially becomes fan service and the more you tilt towards that, the farther you are at risk of drifting away from art. So at one hand we have hit shows driving half of the story based on what fans want, liek GOT for instance and on the other hand, we have franchises who refuse to listen to fans and are like, this is our product, like it or stop watching.
  • Is big business. And its immoral.

Haven't seen either movie and have no plans to, but could Sonic be doing better because Jim Carrey's in it?

It's a more familiar name than Justice Smith (I know Ryan Reynolds is a familiar name too, but he was just a voice actor).

Detective Pikachu faced Avengers: Endgame while Sonic faced Birds of Prey instead.

Birds or Prey is no competition at all for Sonic. It's rated R18, the audience for Sonic can't go see BoP. It's an odd decision because the main character is popular with younger audiences and would probably have got a lot of them in if it was rated for them.

I guess they wanted it to be part of the Suicide Squad line of movies. Shame because they only decent movies DC has done have all be rated for wider audiences and some of them have done pretty well.

        • If you compare the two, Sonic basically is a pokemon.

(Please don't take this comment as insulting Sonic or cheerleading Pokemon, I don't get the latter at all, and always enjoyed Sonic games, so... yeah.)

The first generation of Pokemon games were solid RPGs for the Game Boy, and Nintendo's been very good at working the franchise. They've kept producing at least half-decent hand-held RPGs, as well as spin-off games like Pokemon Snap (a creative take on a rails shooter). They're really good at selling the merchandise. The plushies and figurines are so cute!

    • It'll likely be that. Jim's performance is the only thing that makes the movie particularly remarkable. Even if he's not the right body type for doctor robotnic.
  • Is that really in any way significant ?
  • While the original Tron was before the Tron game, and the Tron game was short lived, the second Tron Movie should count, and it did $172,062,763 domestically.

Anyway, Warcraft, while it didn't do well domestically, still tops worldwide at $439m.

  • A good milestone to reach before all the theaters closed for COVID-19.
  • I was roped into going with the family and was dreading it. Turns out it was actually entertaining. Dare I say "pretty good"?
Jim Carrey is a high point, but even with someone else in the role I think it would have been almost as good. He basically channels 75% Ace Ventura and 25% all his other characters.

  • How come I have never heard of this movie until now?

Of course, I've heard of the Sonic movie, and I saw billboards plastered everywhere
advertising it, but nothing about Detective Pikachu.
