Sony Postpones PS5 Event 'To Allow More Important Voices To Be Heard'

  • Its been several days and barely a peep about COVID with thousands of people packing together like sardines to march around and loot and burn down buildings. And now the media, and corporations like Sony, and Twitter bluechecks who just a few days before were Karening it up at the slightest flouting of the rules; at worst talk about it generically like its a prelockdown picnic or fawn over and outright endorse it. Where are the stern 'nurses' to stand around and lecture and block the path of these people? S

First of all, I don't know what news you're listening to, but most of the mainstreams (ABC, NBC, CBS) and the two left-leaning (CNN, MSNBC) networks have mentioned the lack of masks among demonstrators in almost every coronavirus segment and predicting spikes in about two weeks due to this. Several blue-area mayors have asked demonstrators to get Covid tests during their daily news conferences. Sounds pretty consistent to me.

The COVID angle is barely a part of the mainstream media coverage of these protests and certainly doesn't seem to be a factor in all the ringing endorsements from corporations, politicians, and celebrities coming in. Its a minor element at best. Nice try gaslighting.
          • Nice try gaslighting.

That's cute. This coming from the guy who called me a liar [slashdot.org] for posting the full video proving the Biden "We can only re-elect Donald Trump" video was indeed "manipulated media" just as Twitter described it. If you double down on your own lie when presented with evidence of the contrary, then you show that you are quite capable of doing your own gaslighting.

When I saw your original post I wondered how many times it had been brought up. I have definitely heard the Covid aspect discussed, but I thought I could

Nice try, but a few mentions here and there doesn't cut it. If this was as important to them as they claimed it was just a few days ago there would be wall to wall coverage about what a public health hazard this was, and it would be by far the DOMINANT theme. They would have jumped on the protestors at least as much as earlier protester and there certainly wouldn't be the endorsements and widespread condoning we see now. Don't try to claim the COVID angle is a major part of the coverage from mainstream netwo

Every time I watch coverage it's mentioned about every 30 minutes or so about the social distancing (although I've also more often than not seen most protesters wearing masks, and not the "burn the shit down" kind of masks) as long as the talking heads don't get distracted by something like the CNN lobby siege (that was kind of crazy to watch)

To be fair, if it was at the level of the reopen protests, then the COVID-19 would be the biggest worry.

However, the whole rioting facet of it is a bit more of a severe and immediate problem to focus on.

I didn't say there was absolutely no mentions of covid. I said barely. Which is absolutely true. Its a minor element whereas they jumped all over earlier protestors about it and it was the most important thing in the world before while now they condone or endorse the riots and protests overriding it.

            • And why were the cops not all over the people walking down the street heavily armed?
Why are the cops shooting tear gas at people sitting on their own front porch?
              Hmm makes you think.....

the way it looks like here in post“-corona europe now, that spike is not going to come from people on the streets. we were anticipating one too after people started to go out again, but it didn‘t come. the only major new infection clusters stem from indoor activities like schools, postal warehouses or churches.

Of course not. To all your questions.

It was clear from the beginning that the lockdowns were designed to tank the economy in an attempt to prevent President Trump's inevitable reelection. You could practically see people on the left orgasm as they talked about the number of unemployed and the number dead. What they don't want to admit is that all COVID-19 has done is front-load deaths that would happen anyway. COVID-19 isn't killing healthy people. It's killing sick people, and typically people who likely w

    • Look at it this way, even if all of those people are still concerned and legitimately believe that they have good reason to be concerned (i.e., whether they actually should be doesn't matter, only that they truly believe they're doing what's best without any ulterior motives), do you think any of those people are stupid enough to try and tell the protesters that they're wrong? Anyone could tell you that any person who tries is just going to get accused of being racist by the Twitter mob.

      As far as public
    • Racism kills more people than corana virus by far. It's reach is much greater than you realize. Did you know that most black men suffer hypertension because their ancestors only survived the crossing the Atlantic because their bodies retain salt. The people who didn't retain salt dies and were removed from the gene pool. What do you think the death toll that results from something like that look like? That's not even getting into everyday racism and it's affects on individuals, or the effects of pove
      • Huh? These are the exact same arguments made against the lockdown protesters. Now that suddenly the protesters are on their side, the argument goes away. It's an obvious double standard. But that's perfectly OK when you have demonized and dehumanized your own countrymen as The Other.

we are going to delay a bit because with the protests and riots we won't get any press coverage.

    • Why can't it be both?
    • This is basically it. Other companies have postponed events when something else happens that's more likely to draw media coverage. Google delayed a big Android event when Steve Jobs died [wsj.com] just because that was going to dominate the tech press for a week.

Personally I think this kind of response is the wrong sort, but it's not as though I should expect a marketing department to agree.

Nah... they don't NEED press coverage. They have massive amounts of fans that will spread info on their smaller websites and word of mouth.

What they want is to avoid being accused of being "tone-deaf" and be "canceled" by the Twitterverse. It's a very delicate PR world out there right now. Online mob mentality is a genuine concern and organizations need to be extra judicious on their use of peoples' attention.

      • by AmiMoJo ( 196126 )

They wouldn't be accused of being tone deaf, they would be tone deaf.

      • I'm no online mobster but it does feel like a strange time for a fun-filled console launch. There's no reason not to wait for a better time.
        • by eepok ( 545733 )

Exactly. Chances are that the launch was scheduled months ago, confirmed weeks ago, and given a second consideration in the last couple days.

      • It's really both. Lots of video game system purchasing decisions are made by non-gamers, e.g. parents. They want to reach those people.

The rioting or the virtue signaling!

    • by AmiMoJo ( 196126 )

It's actually impossible to do anything good any more without being accused of virtue signalling.

Stopped to rub that cat's belly? Virtue signalling. Gave away your last kidney to help that guy who sold his? Virtue signalling. Left 2ml of milk in the bottle in case your partner wants a microscopic spoon of cereal later? Virtue signalling.

In fact you are virtue signalling just by calling your Sony's virtue signalling.

    • by vix86 ( 592763 )

      virtue signaling

Would you of rather them said: "We have postponed the event because the protests and riots would swallow up all the potential press we would get for the launch of our new product." Congratulations, now everyone is attacking them for being "the typical greedy, unfeeling corporation." They chose the less bad press phrasing for this all.

  • by laxguy ( 1179231 ) on Monday June 01, 2020 @04:05PM (#60132294)
for biggest circle-jer.. i mean virtue signalling!
  • For anyone saying this is because the protests are taking their publicity, there's a ton of gamers out there who don't watch news, live in small cities or ones without protests and who are now aware of the protests.
  • I know you think the free press and good will garnered is worth it but just ask Disney [youtube.com] how fast that can back fire on you.

But, Sony is pretty shit these days anyway. I think the last time I checked their gaming division was like the only profitable one since they keep making shitty movies and whatnot.

Suppose you don't really care about society. Suppose you don't really care about market failure, or externalities, or whatever else other people have decided to care about. Suppose the only thing that matters is whether Sony sells stuff, and you as a shareholder get PAID. You'd be hard pressed to argue that a launch of the PS5 will get much media attention. The audience is paying attention to a different story-- that they as rational individuals, have decided is more important. Since the whole point of a launch is to garner media attention, it would unwise for a rational firm to compete against a larger, more compelling story.

  • they don‘t want the more important voices“ to distract from their news. Still, it‘s a strong move to word it that way. From the outside the police brutality in the US looks absolutely terrifying. In combination with the pandemic and that international laughingstock of a president this could turn out really dangerous. hope it doesn‘t, because it would mightily suck if the US becomes a failed state. i‘d miss mickey mouse and star wars.
  • I guess the delay is just so they can add the presentation of the new DLC for RIOT - Civil Unrest [playstation.com] - this new level being located in the US?
  • They are afraid that the paid antifa bunch will storm the place and steal everything.
  • More important voices to be heard? LOL. That's a good one.

Maybe the boogeyman will speak up?

They had to come up with some excuse I suppose.
