PlayStation 5 Console Revealed (eurogamer.net) 81

At a live event today, Sony officially unveiled its PlayStation 5 console. Eurogamer reports: The sleek and curved box will come in two flavors -- one with a disc drive, and one without. Meet the PlayStation 5, and PlayStation 5 Digital Edition. No pricing or launch date details were announced today. The white-colored console can be orientated horizontally or vertically. Both versions have a USB and USB-C port in the front. Also shown: a controller charging station which docks two DualSense pads, a headset featuring 3D audio support and noise-cancelling microphones and a media remote with built-in microphone. You can watch the PS5 hardware reveal trailer here. Sony also offered a first extended look at actual games running on the upcoming hardware.

It looks like a rejected design for the Xbox 360 after they specified that the side should look like they're "Taking a breath" There was also nothing really on show from the games that the current gen doesn't look like it's they're capable of.

    • yeah I must say I am not a fan of the new look.

    • Seriously, looks like Eve from Wall-E produced and offspring with a storm trooper.

The internet let me down today. 94 pictures of Eve from Wall-e on Rule34 and not one included a Storm Trooper, though the USB cord bondage one kinda makes up for it.

    • I thought it kind of looked like an X-BOX 360

    • and so the next-gen prepares to be stuck with a box full of three year old hardware to be cutting edge :p
here we go ... iCrosoft has been surprisingly quiet for all i know its like they're waiting to pounce with a counter-attack instead of going offensive
  • I understand they are making the new games exclusive to the PS5, and not allow running them on the current gen like Xbox. It might make economical sense on Sony's end (they want to sell consoles).

On the other hand, the actual good games usually do not come in the first year of the console lifecycle. Given our huge backlog, and the generous PS Now library options, I think I will wait until late 2021/2022 to jump onto the next gen bandwagon.

    • PS5 is backward compatible with PS4 so there will already be a library of games available at launch.

      • by stikves ( 127823 )

Yes, but I already have the PS4 Pro, and that was my point. I can still work on finishing my unplayed game collection. Meanwhile, the PS5 gains more steam, and gets a discount or a bundle.

What is more, there is usually a console refresh early in cycles with better power and cooling. That adds to reliability in the long term.

        • You never stated that. People can't read your mind, so please try to articulate your thoughts better next time.

            • by Hodr ( 219920 )

The implication is that your choice to upgrade was based upon the availability of games, and perhaps even that moving to the new system would prevent you from playing those old games.

His statement of backwards compatibility directly addressed both.

You did not imply that you were waiting for the PS5 to drop in price or have a nice bundle.

    • by Luckyo ( 1726890 )

This time though, they actually have a valid excuse for going "next gen only". Main new upgrade of this generational jump (as opposed to performance only jump that was PS4 to PS4 Pro) is to make a revolutionary change in how games treat non-volatile storage. Where before you decompressed and loaded your textures into system RAM (and VRAM of the GPU), this time PS5 is banking on its special middleware between their very fast SSD and CPU to allow for it to function as a sort of a predictive RAM buffer.

      This me

      • by stikves ( 127823 )

Well, I still believe it is a financial decision, even though the storage technology is really revolutionary.

First, to be frank I don't think it will fundamentally change how the games are *played* at least in the first year or so. It will affect the texture fidelity, and load times, possibly level sizes, but those are incremental changes. I suppose the latest gameplay change I saw was in God of War 3, where one second you see Gaia climbing the Mount of Olympus, the next second it zooms to tiny Kratos on he

        • by Luckyo ( 1726890 )

Absolutely. Any decision in that world is first and foremost a financial one. That's because if financial incentive is the primary driver for everything.

But the more important part is that there's a good chance that this tech will go downstream to other systems, including PC in a year or two. And I'm looking forward to OS and hardware adapting to fast SSD usage as primary non-volatile media, instead of current HDD optimizations.

For the first 2 months the only way to get one would be to buy it for twice the price because jackasses, i mean entrepreneurs, will buy up the supply and post them on ebay. That's how it worked for the last iteration or two.

looks like they're finally going to kill off Gamestop & the Used Market, or try anyway. All the images are of the console without a disk drive. There'll be one with a drive, but it's pretty clear which one they want you to buy.

I suspect this'll be the last gen where you can buy physical games. I'm a PC Gamer mostly (though ironically I mostly play console ports), but I'm kind of going to miss being able to buy old games. I'm still ticked off I can't get Marvel vs Capcom 2 or Outrun 2006 on my PS3/360 without complicated forms of piracy...
    • I was wondering what Digital Edition was, I guess it's without a Blu-Ray drive then....

That does make sense for some people, but I'll bet quite a lot of people would still want the model that could play Blu-ray Discs, even if they mostly order games digitally. So probably Gamestop will be OK.

      • by khchung ( 462899 )

From the picture you can see one with the black disc slot (one the left) and one without (on the right, which is slimmer).

A lot of people buying PS5 already owned a PS4 and thus already has a Blu-Ray drive.

I have never bought any PS4 game on disc except the few that I bought along with the PS4 at launch, I have bought all my games digitally, dozens if not over a hundred. So if the Digital Edition is cheaper, it would be a good option.

        • by samdu ( 114873 )

The Blu-Ray drive in the PS5 is a 4K drive, however. So anyone that cares about owning Blu-Ray movies (and also has a 4K TV) will probably opt for the version with the drive. I'm going that route, not just for 4K Blu-Ray, but also for backward compatibility purposes. I have a fair number of PS4 discs.

    • by JackAxe ( 689361 )
The console pictured on the left has a what looks like slot loading drive. It looks like they'll have two models, one with and one without.

I'm also a PC guy and I'm fighting tooth and nail to keep game media physical. More and more of these game companies are getting infested by ideologues that believe it's OK to censor or delete someone's entire collection for wrong think.
      • It's not ideology driving digital adoption, it's common sense and pragmatism. I don't like the "licensing" thing anymore than anyone else, but pretending like this is some sinister force instead of a very predictable, market-oriented outcome is childish.
        • by JackAxe ( 689361 )
What? We're talking about two different things. Your reading comprehension is that of a child.

I'm not talking about the adoption of digital. I don't have a problem with it, but I prefer physical copies. I have my share of digital games on PC, and with mobile it's the only way. Digital media as a whole has been very convenient.

What I'm referring to, is a more recent occurrence. It's the danger of having your entire digital library removed by just one person, who is in a position to cancel a customer'

You don't need physical media for that. You just need a discrete installer for each game. I.e. GoG model.

    • I worry more about killing off competition in sales of new games. No more Amazon/Walmart/Target putting downward pressure on pricing, so the PlayStation store will have the last word on prices.

      • No it will not have the last word... unless you expect them to come and take money from you without asking.

They will set the prices at what consumers will pay... so if you just have a little bit of patience and enough of us always waits until a game is below a certain amount before you buy they will adjust the price down.

But that requires a little... what did they call it?... oh yea... self control.

        • Sadly, if it relies on impulse control for the greater good, that virtually ensures that it is doomed.

        • by mabinogi ( 74033 )

The price threshold at which someone chooses simply not to buy something is way higher than the one at which they'll buy an existing cheaper version.

With no competition, the settled price is the maximum the market considers the good to be worth.
With competition, the settled price is the minimum for which it can be profitably sold.

So yes, the PayStation store will have the last word on prices, within the maximum range that consumers consider the games to be worth.

In the real world, good luck getting "enough of us" to agree on anything. And I see no guarantee that waiting will help, as Disney routinely gets away with charging full new release price for discs of 80-year-old movies.

Sounds like an anti-trust investigation is in order.

There are already moves to force allowing the resale of digital games. For example in France the regulator recently won against Steam, although I think the appeal is pending. It's likely that in many places they will have to let you resell your digital games eventually.

Could be interesting, e.g. what if you get banned for cheating (legitimately or by mistake), can you sell the games you can no longer play? Can you make a new account that isn't banned and s

Sure, right after the anti-trust against Apple for the iOS App Store.

I'm surprised Apple hasn't been investigated further over the App Store. At least on Android you can use your own choice of app store and the Amazon one is mildly successful.

    • but I'm kind of going to miss being able to buy old games

I already do. There's no point to buying physical copies of anything anymore.

Old days: Box, CD, thick manual, usually artwork or some other extras.
Today: CD with a download link, or even if you do have physical data on what you buy, the second you try to play it you download a 20GB update anyway.

There's no such thing as a gold release anymore. It's just, go to market and patch it, if consumers are REALLY lucky, it is patched on release day.

      • Today: CD with a download link, or even if you do have physical data on what you buy, the second you try to play it you download a 20GB update anyway.

Console makers require that the disc or cartridge contain the full data for at least the first few chapters of the game. They keep no-activation physical copies around to deter rural and deployed military users, who have long-standing limits on available Internet connections, from defecting to the competitor's console. (Yes, I'm aware of a counterexample involving imminent expiration of a Tony Hawk license.)

    • well personally I wish they would create a console that lets you buy from their store AND sync to a steam library - I mean it isn't that you can't do it, it is that the companies keep warring with each other.
  • Still wondering as to the price point? One source suggested 599 USD, but probably just speculation? At the same time if that is the price, then that’s going to hurt in Canada. A quick back envelope calculation, factoring in exchange rate and taxes put it at around $940 CAD. If that is the case then I might just settle for a Switch and look to see how things are in a year.

  • I have no interest in the Sony CensoredStation 5.
Look, even Japanese games have the more authentic version on the Xbox: "Devil May Cry 5 Slightly Censored, But Only On PS4" (Kotaku).
Hell Sony is censoring harder than Nintendo! "Brave Neptunia On PS4 Gets Censored, Nintendo Switch Version Remains Uncensored For Now" (OAG).
If you want to buy games why would you buy them on the CensoredStation 5 instead of the XBSX or just on PC?
  • ...when they finally release the PS9.

    • It'll look similar to this. The odd-numbered playstations are not stackable. They are rounded or convex, or some other shape that doesn't integrate well with your existing A/V stack. The Even-numbered ones are flat and easily stackable.

Does it run Linux? Can a normal person set up a Beowulf cluster of those?

(Sadly, the answer to both is a resounding "no". FreeBSD itself wouldn't be bad, but a locked-down version of it just does not excite my geek nature.)

Microsoft got utterly crushed this gen on consoles. So what they did was to use a backdoor through their crippled spyware10 OS user base. They basically leveraged win10's microsoft store, which is effectively why win10 gaming is less of PC gaming and more of console gaming (as compared to win7 et al). Microsoft store is that fucked up DRM platform that encrypts everything, can install and uninstall things without asking the user and so on. From Microsoft's point of view, it's a trojan horse in user's PC, th

Unless your PC comes set to "S Mode", you can buy, install, and play games without using Microsoft Store. If Windows 10 were really a game console, then most gaming-grade PCs would ship in S Mode. But they don't.

the very OS you need to run most games today is built specifically to function as a delivery mechanism for SaaS model. And alternatives like win7 are slowly going away as they're no longer sold anywhere

Even games that require Windows 10 can be sold outside Microsoft Store. What problems have you run into while trying to run Itch.io, GOG, Steam, or Epic on Windows 10?

Why has the console got to be filled with blue LEDs? I don't understand this trend of filling up home appliances with bright blue LEDs. Hope you can turn them off, they're really annoying and distracting when you're supposed to be focused on what's happening on the TV screen.

Blue LEDs are absolutely awful. I can't stand them. I hate the look of them, and find them harsh, especially in a dimly lit room. I've covered many of them with black tape.
