Nintendo Plans Upgraded Switch Console and Major Games for 2021 (bloomberg.com) 49

Nintendo plans to debut an upgraded model of its Switch console next year along with a lineup of new games, Bloomberg reported Tuesday, citing people familiar with the matter said, ceding 2020's holiday spotlight to rival devices from Sony and Microsoft. From the report: The specifications of the new machine have yet to be finalized, though the Kyoto-based company has looked into including more computing power and 4K high-definition graphics, people briefed on the strategy told Bloomberg News, asking not to be identified because it's private. Nintendo faces stiff competition for gamers' attention this fall as the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X are set to arrive in time for the shopping season. The release of the upgraded Switch would be coupled with, or followed by, a slew of games from Nintendo itself and related outside studios, the people said. Those games would address a wide range of players, from casual gamers seeking small doses of escapism to more devoted fans putting in marathon gaming sessions. The focus on next year's pipeline explains Nintendo's relatively quiet software release schedule so far this year, the people said.

  • Unless your Switch is attached to a screen the size of a cliff.

    • Isn't that the point... the ability to Switch screens? It's called that for a reason.

I've got a 65" TV. It would be nice to get real 4K output, even if it's not going to have 4K when playing in handheld mode. 15 years ago, people bitched about the Wii only doing 480p, and now you're here complaining about Nintendo doing 4K, even if they're late to the party.

Why? You'll not see it on a screen that small.

You can absolutely notice a difference in clarity between 1080p and 4K on a 69" screen.

Would you like to claim to all the technical users here that no-one can notice a difference on even a 27" monitor between 1080p and 4/5k?

            Sure. I didn't say you wouldn't.

You’ve already lost that battle to the TV Marketing group. They’ve since moved on, and are preparing to convince people that anything less than 8K looks like crap on screens 32” and up - just in time for the holidays!

Remember: Show your family that you truly love them. Don’t make them settle for 4K - their eyes will thank you!

Given that I have a 75" 4K screen, yeah... I would welcome a 4K Switch. The current Switch doesn't look completely terrible on the big screen, but it doesn't look particularly good, either.

      • that's the nice thing about the switch though; the artwork makes the lack of horsepower less of an issue. Like BoTW; the art style totally works. you don't need photorealistic graphics to make a great game.

    • Nothing about 4K is a waste of time for a console which is currently GPU restricted. This announcement is one that they are finally addressing performance issues. There are several games where even connecting to a 1080p monitor currently causes frame rate drop vs playing on the console itself.

        That's a separate issue.

I'd love if my switch could do 4k, I've got a Sony 4k projector and a large acoustically transparent screen. Our Xbox One X looks amazing, the PS3 still looks great, but the Switch feels quite dated. Targeting 4k for the easier output means we should be able to get a true/sustained 1080p output, a massive improvement. E.g. Breath of the Wild was only pushing 900p when plugged in and would chug in certain points, I'd love to revisit it at 1080p and a sustained 30FPS (if 60FPS isn't possible).

    • The point is so it can display menus and such on your 4k TV, not play games in 4k.
  • mario maker 3 soon only on the new hardware just in time after the last major free update that 2 got.

  • Given how the technical capabilities of Nitendos consoles have slipped behind ever since the Gamecube. Yes gameplay, but you can find good gameplay on old 8 bit machines , never mind a 21st century console.

    • Nintendo want to de-nerdify home gaming. This means having games that are fun for kids and girls. If you're looking for high spec from Nintendo then you haven't been paying attention. Everyone knows it's PC, Xbox or Playstation for the basement dwelling neckbeards.

Good gameplay is pretty rare on the sony first party games, as they're too busy trying to somehow win an oscar with em, and that's bad even for nintendo fans as nintendo don't even bother that much trying as there's no competition in the gameplay field anymore.
It's quite a miracle they got a game like Super mario Odyssey out.

I don't think that's true at all, a lot of Sony first party games

Spider Man had excellent gameplay. So did Horizon Zero Dawn. So did Uncharted. So have pretty much every God Of war...

I could go on, but basically good gameplay is the rule rather than the exception for Sony first party games. Yes some of them also try to be cinematic but that's common for any large games on any system nowadays...

  • This is the most embarrassing aspect of Nintendo that they continue to not address. Still can't play super smash bros reliably.
    • That's nothing to do with the Switch and everything to do with Nintendo's dumb-arse PTP netcode they employ in their games.

  • The only way I can see why Nintendo would do this would be if the current Switch couldn't handle Breath of the Wild 2. It will be interesting to see what happens if BotW 2 requires new hardware.
  • I've been putting off buying a Switch until the price dropped. Obviously that isn't going to happen and now you can't even find one. Eventually the supply will come back, but I'm thinking I'm going to wait and see what this 'Switch Pro' is like. It seems like every time I'm about to pull the trigger on something a 'new and improved' version gets released a few months later. I came this close to buying a new Mac a few months ago before they announced the switch to arm, so I almost got burned there too (
    • Wait for a new model to be released, then buy the previous generation used at lower price.

      • That doesn't seem to happen with Nintendo stuff though until the next gen system comes out. Since the 'Pro' model is going to be more expensive they're not going to discount the regular one.
  • They do a re-master of the Prime trilogy with modern controls.
and 4 to at least have the option

Will this one have better analog sticks that don't start to drift after a few months? Three years later and they still have not fixed that fundamental design flaw.

    • Yeah I can't believe they can't fix that either. That's also one of the reasons I've been waiting on getting one. Although if it hasn't been fixed by now I doubt they're trying.
    • If it's anything like the N64 sticks, they get gunk inside of them and can be cleaned out. They don't have much incentive to fix it when they can sell you another set of joycons for $80.

    • I used to have this problem all the time when replacing pots in my stereo equipment. Brand new pots would go bad and start to crackle like mad after a few months, regardless of the supposed quality of the pot supplier.

I started spraying a small amount of contact cleaner (ie, glorified WD-40) into the pots before installation. That small amount of lubricant makes the pots last for many, many years without trouble. It did wonders to fix my old analog joysticks from the 90's, too.

  • Nothing is confirmed and Bloomberg's source is behind a paywall: "Taiwan’s Economic Daily News first reported the new console plans on Monday. A Nintendo spokesman declined to comment."

https://udn.com/news/story/725... [udn.com] for those who can read it, this is the only source for any "Nintendo Plans".

I mean eventually they are right, we've heard about updated consoles maybe 6 times in the past few years, and only one case has actually been legit, funny enough that one came from Nintendo itself.

  • The article was light on what new games are coming in 2021. Anybody got the scoop on that or care to speculate?
