Luna is Amazon's New Cloud Gaming Service (theverge.com) 24

At its 2020 hardware event today, Amazon announced a cloud gaming platform called Luna. The news isn't too surprising: the service has been rumored since last year, previously codenamed "Tempo," while an Amazon-made game controller leaked out just ahead of today's event. From a report: It's not clear when Luna will launch widely, but it will initially be available on PC, Mac, Fire TV, and iPhone and iPad (via web apps), with an Android version planned for after launch. Amazon says that interested users in the US can request early access to the service starting today. There's no word on international availability. The service will be available for an "introductory price" of $5.99 a month during its early access phase, which gives subscribers the ability to play Luna Plus channel games across two devices simultaneously and offers 4K / 60fps resolution for "select titles." Naturally, it will be powered by AWS, Amazon's ubiquitous web platform.

  • How many game streaming services have failed so far? Why do they keep trying? If Amazon wants to make some profit from video games (beyond what they get from Twitch) It seems like a storefront to compete with Steam and Epic would be a better choice.

I don't think that matters... Google, Nvidia, and Microsoft already have their own game streaming services, so Amazon also needs one to check that checkbox as well. Otherwise, the stock analysts will get mad and threaten to downgrade their stock.

      1. We don't need another god damn game store until digital exclusives are illegal.
      2. Amazon has no game library.

      • 1. I agree, I just saying it looks like an safer profit center considering they are already a e-commerce giant. Then again, they are also already a cloud-computing giant.

        2. Valve's library is all of half a dozen games, it's all about 3rd parties.

This is a strange claim. I was sad to hear Microsoft was buying Bethesda as I have fond memories of Fallout, but I find it odd that you think there should be some legal requirement for games to be platform neutral.

Does this mean that you would oppose Nintendo's tradition of making hardware so tied to the game that it's not really portable? Would all games have to utilize some standard controller or keyboard/mouse setup? Would all companies be required to make Mac ports even if they were unprofitable?

        I'm not

        • Does this mean that you would oppose Nintendo's tradition of making hardware so tied to the game that it's not really portable?

Yes. This has been an annoying trend of Nintendo of doing that.

Would all games have to utilize some standard controller or keyboard/mouse setup?

Yes, but this has pretty much standardize already.

Would all companies be required to make Mac ports even if they were unprofitable?

No. Different platform from Windows. I am barely ok with it, but I can understand it. You can be stuck to one platform if that platform has a feature no other one does. But then again, all the big companies out there are saying you should be able to developed for everything at the same time so why not.

If this law you are proposing had been implemented in the 80s then to this day all controllers would be a direction pad and two buttons. You are arguing that innovation ought to be illegal.

If Apple took gaming seriously and started buying up exclusives I bet you would sing a different tune.

It really sounds like your arguments are centered on what would be most convenient for you rather than what actually makes the most sense. I mean, Nintendo is a more distinct platform compared to other consoles than the M

            • Huh? You said if I wanted to see more bullshit Nintendo controllers. I do not. The WiiMotes did nothing for anyone except make them look like idiots. This is why Metroid Prime 3 was such crap. Same with the WiiU. That giant table screen wasn't that good. And the controller that plug into the side of the switch are the among the most unconformable things I ever held and not very precise. I have never use is portable. It has stayed in its dock.

Apple won't take is serious if they haven't already. And if the
    • How many game streaming services have failed so far? Why do they keep trying?

Because it only takes one must-have hit for one of these services to take off and become the Netflix of gaming. Just like with streaming video, there will only be so much room for game streaming services. Everyone is jockying for a space at the table.

Video game consoles are complete overkill. It costs tons to make games for them and so much of that is spent making things look pretty rather than making them more fun. While I have not played either Fortnite or Minecraft (or any game in a long time), my unders

  • On top of prime and twitch and all the other Amazon services? Bezos needs a new yacht.
    • Who cares about Bezos, though. You need to look at the math from your own point of view. $6/mo is $72/year. If this saves you from buying 2 A-list games per year, you come out ahead.

However, they did say the $5.99 was "introductory", though. So who knows where it will wind up.
    • by leonbev ( 111395 )

You would think that Prime users will eventually get a discount on this.

      • Why should I even need to pay extra. They jacked the rate from $100 to $120 while adding very little in the way of features or improvements.
    • It may be for the casual gamer or like the parchessi set in the closet. Nice to pull up when you want it but not something you are addicted to.
it's cheaper so maybe it's something for the kids to play with but not get so engrossed or need a high dollar committment before you sign up.

      • Causal gamers have their phones. They aren't using computers or consoles.
        • I'd call myself a casual gamer. I hate the tiny/touch screen experience. Computer or console only, but I'll happily stay several generations behind to be cheap. Casual gamers are not going to pay for a subscription for games.

  • will be ban in the ios store under apples rules!

    • From the summary:

iPhone and iPad (via web apps)

The app store has nothing to do with this. They're going with Apple's original intention for apps on the platform and are going full web-only.

  • I see this service going away at the end of the year
    Its shit anyways.
Up to 1080p 60fps. Fuck that. It is or I don't want it
    Doesn't even mention the games
And its an extra $6 on top of my Prime subscription. Doubly fuck that.
