New Videogame Bug Turns Spider-Man Into a Trash Can (gamespot.com) 52

A new bug in the PlayStation game Spider-Man: Miles Morales "turns Miles into various inanimate objects, including bricks, cardboard boxes, and even a trash can," reports GameSpot: Despite Miles' changed appearance, he can still perform many of his heroic antics, including web-swinging and beating up bad guys. It's an important lesson to all of us in these trying times: You might look like trash, but you can still do your job.
Today Engadget reports that the glitch even turns Spider-Man into a patio heater: If you've ever wanted to keep people toasty warm while fighting crime, now's your chance.

We've asked [the game's creator] Insomniac Games for comment, although it already tweeted that the hiccup was "equally embarrassing as it is heart-warming." Into the Spider-Verse's Phil Lord joked that the heater would find its way into the sequel if the team had "any self respect at all."

      Spider-Can, Spider-Can
      Does whatever a Spider Can...
    • But spiders are not "bugs". they're arachnids.

I _did_ enjoy the Spiderpig in the Miles Morales based Spiderman movie. I also appreciated that Miles had a father, one with his own troubles who cares deeply and daily for his family. So many of our comic book heroes have no parents, or fantasy parents rather than realistic ones.

    • This isn't a bug, Marvel just decided that people who identify as inanimate objects need more representation in fiction. Sure, you had Odo in DS9, and Korben Dallas identified as a meat popsicle in The Fifth Element, but can you name anything recent? Every kid should know it's okay to identify as a patio heater.

(dare I have to say it: the above was satire - please don't think I'm serious)

  • Spidercanâ"does whatever a spidercan.

However, nobody has ever been able to turn Spidy into working Unicode on slashdot.

      • Sort of loses its punch with broken characters, don't it.
      • It should be easy to write a Greasemonkey script to correctly display Unicode, emojis, and even embedded media (from links) on Slashdot. (I suggest the latter only on click, to avoid web beacons, DOSing and data wasting.)

        Anyone?

Many games in the past have introduced false bugs to people who pirated the software or were using cheats. Some headlines I remember immediately were Batman where you couldn't jump the full distances, terrible aiming accuracy, inability to run, and GameDev Tycoon where victory was impossible because the games the player made were losing money due to piracy.

It would be great if this was yet another. They're a great way for pirates to accidentally incriminate themselves on public forums.

    • Seriously, how brainwashed are you, to so casually be such a dick to people who do not accept being stolen from in a racketeering scheme?

You think it is acceptable to take money for a mere worthless *copy* of the *result* of your work?? Just because you do not want to run a realistic business model where software development is a service, so that only *actual work* is paid? Even though that is literally the deal you got with your employees!
Then I'm sure you must accept me putting the $100 that is the *resul

      • You ruined all of creative work and inventions with your greed.

        And Jefferson said:

If nature has made any one thing less susceptible than all others of exclusive property, it is the action of the thinking power called an idea, which an individual may exclusively possess as long as he keeps it to himself; but the moment it is divulged, it forces itself into the possession of every one, and the receiver cannot dispossess himself of it. Its peculiar character, too, is that no one possesses the less, because every other possesses the whole of it. He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me.

      • You think it is acceptable to take money for a mere worthless *copy* of the *result* of your work?

This just in BAReFO0t believes the first person to buy a game should pay $80million for it and everyone else deserves to get it for free!

This isn't even your usual ignorance here. Well using the word "racketeering" is ignorance because you clearly have no idea what racketeering is, but the rest of your post is outright stupid.

I hope you end up in prison for the actual damages you types cause.

Please go take your medication and go back to bed.

    • Nice story, but if you think that the PS5 has been broken and that pirated games are already making the rounds you're delusional. Bugs happen.

      • You don't have to result to name (adjective?) calling, the GP may legitimately not know this game is a PS5 exclusive, even if he's lucky enough to know someone that has managed to get their hands on one. This is slashdot, we don't RFS before commenting, we arm chair it from the jump. Just point out the console doesn't have a public back yet and move on.

In which case I retract my comment that he's delusional and instead apply the adjective ignorant dolt to him. Just because someone comments on a forum that seems to praise ignorance and irrelevant ramblings doesn't mean you get a free pass from me. The name calling is justified if only to try and make Slashdot a better place.

Just point out the console doesn't have a public back yet and move on.

Move on? MOVE ON? This is the internet man. One doesn't just move on. They argue. They fight. Even if both sides agree you find something worth fighting about. If we don't RTFS, RTFA, a

Maybe it's an anti-piracy feature that is buggy.

It isn't a bad idea to consider anti-piracy measures even though the platform isn't hacked. After all, there is a chance it could be hacked tomorrow, or never. Usually after it gets hacked, pirates take over and dump the entire existing library for it.

        • Maybe it's an anti-piracy feature that is buggy.

Maybe it's aliens. I mean since we're speculating about all sorts of crap that Occam's Razor would suggest is a sign of impeding insanity it's probably aliens.

  • I guess the masses have spoken again.

  • I was watching one video and this guy was swinging along a riverfront for several blocks all webs going up to the buildings on the left.

Do all Spider-Man games behave this way or do some force you to alternate sides while you swing? Maybe realistic web-slinging would ruin a game. Or the side to side away would give people motion sickness.

      • Yes, I'm using Slashdot to distract myself from overwhelming shit that's going on. It's supposed to be pointless. You may have noticed I do not give a flying fuck about if I please anyone here.
So in a way, while the things are useless, the uselessness itself is useful to me.
And YET this was SO useless that it didn't even serve as a time waster. That's why it deserved the award. :)

So you got nothing better to do then, or like half the world you got things to do but you're procrastinating about doing them. /being very hypocritical, I need the magical unprocrastinate spell to remove this damn curse.

  • Must not be any comic book geeks around (or at least that read Marvel) ... the idea is if you see a mistake you write in and explain why it isn't really a mistake, then you get a no prize (no prize, but at least recognition). So let's see ...

We all remember Miles turning invisible in the movie, but invisibility isn't really that good - people could still feel there was something there if they bump into you. So obviously he's been practicing and managed to develop the ability to look like innocuous-seeming o
  • Any video game developers able to chime in here? How is this possible?

Does this mean the object or asset that represents "Miles" is the same class of objects that represents environmental litter? So push through the wrong Guid and it will work?
