PS5 Software Update Brings SSD Installation, 3D Audio Wednesday (cnet.com) 10

Sony has released a new software update for the PlayStation 5 that will let you expand the console's internal storage and use the PS5's 3D audio effects on external speakers. CNET reports: The PS5 update will also let you view PS4 and PS5 versions of the same game separately -- particularly useful after you upgrade to a next-gen version -- plus it gives you more options for customizing the Control Center and lets you use it to write messages to other players. PlayStation Now subscribers will also get the ability to choose between 720p and 1080p streaming options, or use a streaming connection test to identify and fix connection issues. The PS4 is also getting a software update, letting you see PS5 trophies on your profile and those of other players.

This is great news, some time in the future when people can actually purchase these things.

    • One way, is to sign up with Sony - I got an email that I missed, that provided access to a purchase window. Not sure how often they send those out.

The way I actually got a PS5 order in (will not say I have one until the order delivers) is to follow a few restock accounts on Twitter. They alert you ahead of a restock window opening, which gives you a decent chance to get one depending on the retailer.

  • I don't blame Sony for the lack of product. Hell, I haven't purchased a new console (for myself) since the original Xbox. But I still follow the industry.

It looks like the shortage is going to last another YEAR. That's 2 years of this generation where the consoles simply aren't readily available. Pretty strange times.

I do wonder if maybe it's a blessing in disguise, though. These extra couple of years mean that the game devs can spend some extra time on the games, since they don't really have to worry about

  • Are you kidding me? They've added feature which "transforms standard two-channel TV speaker audio into three-dimensional sound, heightening the sense of gameplay immersion" but still do not support any modern 3D sound system? No, I don't want your shitty sound extensions. I got Atmos capable sound system and would like to finally use it with my PS5. Why it is possible for Xbox Series X but not for PS5?

    • Don't they have Dolby Digital output, or DTS or something, on the HDMI? Can't you get that data into your speakers?

      • Yes, we can get surround or even DTS directly to our speakers (5.1 or 7.1) however the games do not take advantage of any atmospheric speakers, such as my 5.1.2 setup where I have two speakers in the ceiling.

Playing a 4K Blu-Ray on PS5 does has a passthrough audio setting so movies with Atmos do get sent correctly to the entire system as just raw data. The PS5 has been able to do this since launch day - but we'd love to have all of our speakers used during gameplay - which is something even the Xbox One X d
