Epic Games May Make Fortnite Movie as Part of Entertainment Expansion (theinformation.com) 21

Epic Games is considering launching an entertainment division focused on scripted video programming, The Information reported Monday, citing people familiar with the situation. From the report: The maker of hit videogame Fortnite is looking to diversify amid legal battles with Apple and Google that have hurt its ability to expand in the mobile market. The division could develop projects including a feature film based on Fortnite, the people said. Such a film has already been discussed. Planning for the entertainment division follows the hiring in 2021's first two months of several executives from Lucasfilm, including Jason McGatlin, formerly vice president of Physical Production at Lucasfilm and now president of Special Projects at Epic. McGatlin was executive producer of all the "Star Wars" films released under Disney. Other hires from Lucasfilm are Lynn Bartsch, Epic's head of Business Affairs, and Chris Furia, Epic's vice president of Production Finance, according to the executives' LinkedIn profiles.

  • Considering Epic Unreal's push into virtual production [unrealengine.com] this really shouldn't come as a surprise.

  • Camp. You make this as ridiculously campy as possible. Like "Evil Dead" camp.

    • Flash Gordon camp. If they can shoehorn Brian Blessed in as leader of the hawkmen then I'll watch it. "Gordon's alive!"

  • This would be like printing money. Even after watching the short trailers they insert into the game now and then, the same videos on YouTube get millions of hits. I've seen kids watch them over and over trying to suss out lore and context. They also watch independently produced machinema based on Fortnite. An official movie would do well.

  • Get all the kids excited by the movie then they go home and find out none of their iOS devices can play it.

So, if you think the net result of:

      1. Losing all iOS/iPadOS (and macOS?) revenue for not only Fortnite, but any future Epic games; plus,

      2. Losing their Epic Games Dev. Account; plus,

      3. Paying for a gigantic (and almost completely unsuccessful) Lawsuit (of their own making!); plus,

      4. Paying for an Appeal of said Lawsuit,

Does not completely swamp out those IAP fees for the next couple of decades, you are utterly delusional.

From an MBA (or Stockholder's) point-of-view, it makes zero business sense.

  • Isnt Squid Game a live action Fortnite Battle Royale? Seems to be pretty popular.

There's absolutely no plot or story to Fortnite. How the hell are they going to make a movie out of it?

    • I think you're expecting too much of a movie adaptation. There have been entire movie franchises built on top of intellectual property that really don't relate much. My favorite example is Pirates of the Carribean.

When there isn't a story in the source material, this gives the creative team huge leeway to do something really interesting or also just phone in some crap. I personally enjoyed the Jungle Cruise movie for what it was and thought they overdelivered on what was required by the premise (a boat
  • Good ol' Epic innovating as usual. Not content with copying PUBG to make Fortnite's core mechanic, copying the likeness of famous people to try and promote it, copying the game mechanics from small indie developers such as those behind Among Us to try and keep their game fresh, they now want to copy League of Legends https://www.engadget.com/netfl... So who has the bingo card? Whose ideal will they rip off next?

  • Please spend 500M at least on it. Make it the best looking thing that you absolutely can! I can't wait...to see you lose that much money...

  • There won't be a lot of action in the film, but there will be a lot of construction [fixerjoe.com] for sure))
