Microsoft Adds 76 More Games To the Xbox Backward Compatibility Program (engadget.com) 20

During the Xbox 20th anniversary event today, Microsoft announced it'll be adding a total of 76 games to the Xbox backward compatibility program. The company also said "Halo Infinite," the latest edition of the best-selling Xbox alien-shooter game, will be available starting today for multiplayer gaming. Engadget reports: Every title Microsoft is adding today will support Auto HDR on Xbox Series X and Series S consoles. You'll also see an increase in resolution when playing original Xbox games. The Xbox Series X and Xbox One X will render those titles at four times their native resolution, while the Xbox Series S will do so at three times and Xbox One S and Xbox One at double. Additionally, 11 titles will support FPS Boost. The feature increases the framerate of a game up to 60 frames per second. 26 titles that were already a part of the backward compatibility library will now support FPS Boost as well. Included in that list are Fallout: New Vegas, The Elder Scrolls IV, Dragon Age: Origins and Dead Space 2. Some of the newly added backward compatible games include the entire Max Payne series and F.E.A.R. franchise, as well as Skate 2 and Star Wars: Jedi Knight II. Microsoft notes that this is the final update for the initiative.

"While we continue to stay focused on preserving and enhancing the art form of games, we have reached the limit of our ability to bring new games to the catalog from the past due to licensing, legal and technical constraints," Xbox Compatibility Program Lead Peggy Lo said.

  • If Microsoft had not entered the console market...

    - Online gaming would have been delayed. Sony had no designs to do it, and Sega Saturn had already failed
    - We would not have great (currently multi platform) franchises like Mass Effect, Star Wars KOTOR, NIER, Chronicles of Riddick and many others
    - Sony would continue to charge $600 for their platforms (remember "they should get a second job" quote)
    - Many games, like Avengers, Outriders would not have survived without the Game Pass monies

Let's not forget that Microsoft is literally the only console vendor that still does any sort of real backwards compatibility.

Online gaming was already a thing. Sony was doing this with Socom Navy Seals and Final Fantasy XI.

Ofo course Microsoft added something to consoles, but they built on the shoulders of giants, and we see like anyone else they are subject to criticism for their poor decisions. They are off to a poor start with few new games and first party games this first year. They should have waited a year and had a lot of stock built up for a release this Christmas with Halo and Forza.

They have to recover from another botc

Although the Sega Saturn had online capabilities by way of a cartridge add-on, I suspect you are getting senile and mispelled the Sega DreamCast.

The latter one was the first console to have (upgradable) online capabilities included by default, a web browser, and ground breaking innovative online games such as Phantasy Star Online.

Combined with its VGA output (progressive scan), its widely available mou

How about the GTA3 games? Why aren't they on the list. Hmmm.

That would be a question for rockstar not MS. MS provide the mechanism and process for the backwards compatibility, it is still up to the publisher and dev to go through that process and make it available. Many companies suck at supporting their older titles.
  • Disappointed because the Xbox 360 runs many more original Xbox games than the new systems do (less than 100!) and many Japanese games are missing. These games are not being ported to the PC or to modern systems and will be lost to new gamers.

But, better than nothing! If only they could extend compatibility to the Windows PC, which could easily run these.
