Sony Launches New PlayStation Gaming Subscription Service (cnbc.com) 20

Sony is set to launch a new video game subscription service this summer, seeking to drive sales of its PlayStation consoles and compete with a similar offering from Microsoft. CNBC: The company said Tuesday it will bundle its existing PlayStation Plus and PlayStation Now services into one single subscription service called PlayStation Plus. The new PlayStation Plus will be available in June and comes in three tiers:

1. The basic package, PS Plus Essential, replaces the original PS Plus, which offers players two free games each month and access to online multiplayer. It costs $10 a month or $60 for an annual subscription.
2. A step above Essential is PS Plus Extra, which comes with all the same perks as Essential but includes a selection of 400 downloadable PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 titles. It's priced at $15 monthly or $100 a year.
3. The most expensive package is PS Plus Premium. This one includes 340 more games than Extra, and lets players stream a selection of PS, PS2, PSP, PS3, PS4 and PS5 games over the internet. PS Plus Premium costs $18 a month or $120 each year.

Come back to me when you can actually find a PS5 to buy in stores, and not from a scalper.

Bought 3 so far (1 for me, 2 for friends) without much trouble. Also an Xbox Series X for a friend. All at MSRP.

    • For $18 a month you get access to 740 games!

I'm guessing a lot of games that aren't part of this package are due to technical or licensing issues (it's not like in 94 they were making studios sign agreements that their Playstation 1 games could be part of an online service in 28 years later).

Just sign up for 2 months, play what you want that they have, then cancel and go back to sleep.

It's a bit more than than that. What you're saying is obviously true, but you don't need to go further than Sony's own games to see than there are issues beyond that: Sony will not release their own first-party games on this service at launch [ign.com]. Microsoft, OTOH, does this. Of course, one major factor here is that Sony traditionally has a much deeper and far, far more attractive lineup of first party games. Microsoft has spent insane amounts of money to fix that, so whether or not that continues remains to be

  • The main thing I was personally concerned about, even above multiplayer, was what level and how much it would cost to have cloud storage of saved games.

Happily the lowest tier covers multiplayer (as the summary mentioned) but also cloud storage, so looks like I'll be sticking with that - two games a month is plenty for me considering how little I played the extra games I could get from Playstation Plus each month already.

One thing I didn't see is what happens to games you previous "acquired" through Playsta

This is an ineffective advertisement as it does not tell me why I should subscribe. What do I get, in terms of games, for my money. And do I need a Sony device. And what cut does Sony get.
      • I agree it would be good to know what games you'll get, but that will come before you actually purchase - basically the lowest tier seems almost exactly like PS Plus now, with the other tiers adding more games the top tier having some of the best games (like Returnal and Spider Man).

So personally, I feel like I understand the lowest tier really well and would just need more explanation as to why I might want to move to the intermediate or top tier.

Of course you will need a Sony device.

As for the cut Sony ge

If you get the highest tier, you can stream to PC. Other than that, you need a Playstation.

  • One of the issues with PS Plus being required for network access to games now is that basically *any* online player has access to the other benefits -- meaning steep sales and discounts. That makes it hard to get financial return and contributes to game inflation for all but those who are dropping for day-one releases.

PS needed a $6/month version that allows online play but doesn't come with free games or as many sales as normally occur. That lets promotions actually occur naturally rather than having to be

    • Another one of the issues is fuck that, I'm not paying a monthly fee for some completely garbage multiplayer matching functions, when most game servers run on players' consoles anyway.

Console gaming is now for people who want to pay over and over again forever to use the same equipment they think they purchased.

      • This "deal" only makes sense if you don't own any games and just want to play whatever they choose to include in the offer. Otherwise, this announcement essentially means the cheapest PS5 available costs $999.99 over its intended lifecycle before you've even purchased games for it. To get backwards compatibility with older games (most of which you'd likely already own), with what will be an inferior streamed experience, they want to charge you a whopping $1699.99 all-in! For that price, you can buy a pre-bu

These platforms are like https://dmarket.com/ingame-items/item-list/csgo-skins/knife/bayonet [dmarket.com] They require access for a specific region, so you should open a Steam account if you are in another country.
