iOS 16 Supports Nintendo's Switch Pro and Joy-Con Controllers (theverge.com) 15

An anonymous reader quotes a report from The Verge: Apple is adding native support for the Nintendo Switch Pro and Joy-Con controllers in iOS 16. Riley Testut, one of the iOS developers behind AltStore, discovered the new controller support in a developer beta of iOS 16 that was released yesterday. The Nintendo Switch Pro Controller works "perfectly" according to Testut, and both Joy-Con controllers show up as a single device for apps and games to take advantage of. Nat Brown, an engineering manager at Apple, has confirmed the new controller support and even revealed there's a neat method to switch how the Joy-Cons work in iOS 16. You can dynamically switch between using both Joy-Cons as a single controller or two separate ones by holding the screenshot and home buttons for a few seconds.

  • They're bluetooth. Android has supported this for years. Is there something special about the Joycon that makes it not work with standard drivers? Is iOS just now getting support for bluetooth controllers?

The issue is that the Joycons are independent devices, i.e. the phone sees two separate controllers for the left and right ones. Some games are okay with that, you can map buttons from different controllers, but some games only let you use one controller at a time.

On Windows there are apps that combine the two Joycons into a single virtual controller. I guess they implemented something similar in iOS.

If you don't need analogue sticks then the best controller is the Pokken one. It's USB and works on Android.

I can't answer your first question but, for the second, iOS 13 (released September 2019) was the first to support bluetooth game controllers [bgr.com].

  • Why is it that with ads disabled, i still get the endless Github advertisement on every Slashdot page load? I press the X on every page and it still just comes back when I navigate to another Slashdot page. What happened to the checkbox about disabling advertising actually doing something??
    • Sponsored posts too (JIRA just now, for example)...

This is obviously some strange use of the word 'disabled' that I wasn't previously aware of.

(with apologies, as always, to DNA for paraphrasing)

    • Use an adblocker, of course. We've moved way beyond the point where it makes sense to trust websites to only serve "reasonable" advertisements.

Even if you didn't mind being advertised to, there are so many examples of advertisements that are security risks or fraudulent that it's inexcusably irresponsible to use the web without an adblocker enabled.

I am using Ublock Origin and have multiple times selected the Github ad and selected to block it in Ublock. Nope, still comes back.

I use ublock origin too; try the following filter which got rid of it for me:

      Block javascript on *.slashdot.org

Slashdot works just fine without javascript enabled - and it gets rid of a lot of annoying async javascript crap like partial page loads and such.
