Bungie Is Now Officially Part of Sony (theverge.com) 21

Bungie, the developer of Destiny 2, is now officially a part of Sony. The Verge reports: The PlayStation maker had announced its intent to acquire the gaming studio in January, and now, that acquisition is complete. At the initial announcement, Sony said (pdf) the deal was worth $3.6 billion, but in an SEC filing on Friday, it said the deal was worth "approximately" $3.7 billion. Though it's now under the Sony umbrella, Bungie will "continue to independently publish and creatively develop our games," Bungie CEO Pete Parsons said in a blog post from the original announcement of the acquisition. And future games in development won't be PlayStation exclusives, Bungie's Joe Blackburn and Justin Truman said.

But Sony does plan to lean on Bungie for its "world-class expertise in multi-platform development and live game services," which "will help us deliver on our vision of expanding PlayStation to hundreds of millions of gamers," Sony Interactive Entertainment president and CEO Jim Ryan said in January. Sony views live service games as a critical part of PlayStation's future, as it plans to launch more than 10 new live service games by March 2026.

Sony can die in a fire.

    • Goodbye, Bungie, Hardly knew ye
    • Considering they came from Microsoft, it was more of a lateral move.

But...they didn't...they started as a completely independent company making Operation Desert Storm [wikipedia.org] and was, interestingly enough, Mac focused [wikipedia.org] initially. Halo (what they were best known for) was actually introduced at MacWorld [wikipedia.org] as it was intended to be a Mac, 3rd person shooter.

I was part of the physical security team that moved Bungie into the Microsoft system, and then a few years later when they separated to set up their own Lenel system. It was an interesting place to be, the first time I was there I was sitting around waiting for someone to show up with a key and a guy was working at his desk nearby. Like everyone else he had half a dozen monitors set up in his cubicle, and the screensaver of one was some fictional laser pistol which bobbed up and down and pointed at random

Someone's still pissed about the Linux thing on the PS2. A feature that was never officially advertised and was virtually unused.

      • Its really that Sony is a crap company that does not stand behind its products. Nothing to do with Linux. I wasn't a victim of their rootkit but I find it deplorable. There are lots of reasons not to support Sony.

PS2 Linux? No, I'm still salty they killed BetaMax through restrictive licensing. And also that they put a rootkit on my computer. By the time they removed linux from the PS2 I had long since abandoned them.

      • Firstly, I assume you mean the PS3 and not the PS2. The PS2 did support an official "Linux for PlayStation 2" kit sold by Sony (and therefore "officially advertised") and has since been hacked to run "unofficial" installations.

Secondly, to address the PS3 Linux debacle, Sony did in fact advertise OtherOS as a feature. You can still find information on it in the official documentation [archive.ph] despite it being discontinued.

Thirdly, Sony's issues aren't just in the past with the above issue and the entire rootkit fias

  • Sony has plenty of expertise in live game services. It doesn't need any more. I doubt cross-platform makes a huge amount of difference either.
  • Well more accurately, I hope this signals the end of platform exclusives. Cloud based gaming works pretty well. I have greatly enjoyed not being tethered to a console or high end computer for playing games.

I appreciate the possible need for monster computers and high end consoles for games which demand low latency. In that case, I can appreciate even needing to use wired game pads due to high latency of wireless controllers.

But my type of game does not care if there is a few extra milliseconds of latency. I
  • They tried this once before. Selling themselves to Microsoft didn't stop them from churning out boring derivative dreck like Halo.* Going cap-in-hand to Activision didn't stop them churning out boring derivate dreck like Destiny and selling themselves to Sony sure as shit ain't gonna fix that. No doubt dozens of eager fanboys will await Bungie's next exercise in futility complete with macro-transactions, micro-stuttering and mini-cosmetics.

    * What the fuck is up with Halo? I picked up the Master Chief co

Destiny one, before they went crazy with expansions was good. The first few Halo games were good. Maybe they will put out something new and it will be good, for a while.

  • Pretty much confirms that Destiny 3 is going to be free to play garbage.

news: gotcha
