Magnus Carlsen Loses Last Competition as World Champion - After Slip of His Mouse (cnn.com) 35

It was Magnus Carlsen's last tournament as world champion, reports CNN — and he was eliminated after a "dramatic slip of his mouse" in his online match against Hikaru Nakamura: After drawing their first two games, the duo faced off in an Armageddon clash — similar to regular chess but black has draw odds, meaning that if black draws the game they win, and black starts with less time on the clock than white — to decide who would face Fabiano Caruana in the grand final.

After a tight encounter, the match was heading to its final seconds with very little to separate the two titans of chess.

And it was a moment of unfortunate luck which separated the two when Carlsen's mouse slipped meaning he put his queen onto F6 which allowed it to be taken by Nakamura and seal the victory.

Nakamura — wearing a t-shirt emblazoned with "I literally don't care" on the front — celebrated with a fist-bump while five-time world champion Carlsen could be seen exclaiming and grimacing in frustration.

On YouTube Thursday, Nakamura posted a 33-minute video titled "Dear YouTube, This Time Magnus Lost," where he explains every move down to the final queen blunder (which he calls by its YouTube nickname, a "Botez Gambit.")

In the video Nakamura admits he'd missed a possible winning position (by drawing) earlier in the game. But he also believes he would've achieved the same result simply by checking Carlsen endlessly until a draw was declared.

And Chess.com tells the rest of the story. Friday Nakamura went on to win the event's final round, defeating grandmaster Fabiano Caruana in another Armageddon-style showdown after they'd each won three out of six games.

  • Magnus Carlsen is pretty wealthy, an achievement in a country so highly taxed. It's time to do what Michael Jordan did and find a way to make his money and reputation work for him.
  • Chess is one game where you don't need a 20K DPI mouse with an 8KHz polling rate. Do you ever need that?

  • I hate where Magnus, Hikaru, Chess.com, etc. are taking chess these days. It's all crypto bullshit and gambling crap these days. Seems like a lot of dirty money is being poured into Chess.

  • Even in high school chess league, if you messed up and put your piece on the wrong square you didn't get to take it back.

If memory serves, fide rules are that the moment you touch a piece you've committed to moving that very piece.

In online chess there is no notion of "Touch Move Rule" [chess.com]. What happened during this online match is that it that Magnus wanted to play his queen from g6 to b6 (so same horizontal line for those who don't know chess notation). However, in the process of doing so, he released his mouse button on the f6 square, which allowed his queen to be taken down in a stupid manner.

The reason it is considered a mouse slip is that with so few pieces on the board at this time of the game, and knowing that both Hikaru and especially Carlsen, are huge end game specialists, he couldn't have done it on purpose at all. It is not a "blunder" either, because a blunder is when you play a move thinking it is the right one, just to realize right after playing it that it is a losing one. In that case, there is no way Magnus though playing his queen in that stupid square was right, thus why it's considered a pure mouse slip, and not a simple blunder.

But anyway, as explained by Hiraku in his video, it was a drawn game anyway, which was all that Hikaru needed to win.

      • Why could he not have done it on purpose for the ego face saving "oh gosh I had this great plan and could have won except for that unfortunate mouse slip which cost the whole game!"?

Last time was, "my opponent has a Wi-Fi enabled anal probe telling him how to play".

        C'mon... enough already.

Retire if you're bored and let others move up who aren't so dramatic.

          The accepted term is teledildonics.

I don't think you grasp the level of understanding of chess GMs have. There is no ego face saving. Any player with an Elo 2000+ can see that this end game is drawish. There is no past pawn for Magnus to play around, his pawn structure is worse than Hikaru's, his queen is less active... At Elo 2400+, these guys have an even deeper understanding and vision of endgame situations like this. They know this game is a draw (it's no longer "maybe drawish"), as you can see from Hikaru's explanation: he goes through

He cried for weeks (months?) about the dildo thing, resigned a game on move 2 against the same guy later, talked to anyone and everyone who would listen to his crazy dildo theories about it, and now his "mouse slipped".

Despite the huge egos and the crazy a lot of these guys suffer, very few of them are so into the public drama like this guy is.

I have no idea where you get the idea is is "pretty publicly dramatic" though. There are a lot (and I mean a lot) of instances where Magnus was losing and he was very humbly praising his opponent. In that case, and at those levels of Elo, those players are not shy to resign instead of just losing, even if the loss would be 5-6 moves later, because they see they have no chance while the rest of us would stupidly still keep playing until the last move.

There is this famous game for instance [youtube.com], where Magnus insta

Did he or did he not disclaim the dildo theory? He did not.

                • Does he or does he not have a history of getting in the news for various chess shenanigans? He does.

He gets in the news because he has been the world champ for the last 10 years, undisputed, and with a clear edge over all his competitors. This is why you see him in the news.

We rarely see this sort of behavior from others at that level

We do see that sort of behavior from others, when you follow the chess world. The only difference is that the other guys are "just" GMs, not world champions, so they don't get headlines on general news website/slashdot.

Carlsen's position was already lost at that point, anyway. All he could hope for was mistakes by Nakamura. The reason the position is lost is because for this game's rules, a draw is considered a win for black, and Nakamura would have still won this tournament. It's even possible that Carlsen did it on purpose to make it look like his loss was an accident.

Carlsen accuses computer mouse of cheating ...

  • Mice are crude imprecise things suited to interaction with the visual blobs/icons of GUI, not to precision.

When it comes to precision command line wins. The custom of using mice for chess seems odd to me.

    Magnus Carlsen, the chess grandmaster,
Lost his last match, a disaster.
His mouse slipped, his game was wrecked,
His opponent won, feeling quite checked.

    Magnus sat there, in disbelief,
How could this happen, oh good grief!
But his cat, sitting on his lap,
Had a different take on this mishap.

"Meow! Meow!" the cat did say,
"Maybe it's time to take a break and play.
You've been staring at that board all day,
It's no wonder your mouse went astray!"

Magnus laughed, and scratched his cat's ear,
"You're right, my friend, I need to clear
My mind and take a little rest,
Before I play my very best."

In the movies and chess analysis, they always use notation like "Queen's pawn to D4" and it's blazingly simple to X,Y label a chessboard. Battle Chess allowed you to do this back in the 90's FFS.
