Sony Closes In On 40 Million PS5s Sold (theverge.com) 25

Sony says it sold a total of 38.4 million PlayStation 5 consoles, according to the company's latest earnings release. In the first three months of the year, it shipped 6.3 million units -- "more than triple what the company shipped in the same quarter the previous year (2 million)," reports The Verge. From the report: On the software side things were more mixed, Bloomberg notes. Revenue from game software was up overall, but units shipped fell from 70.5 million in the fourth quarter of 2021 to 68 million in the same quarter of 2022. PlayStation Network monthly active users were up slightly from 106 million to 108 million, but the number of PlayStation Plus subscribers were flat at 47.4 million.

This disparity partly reflects the lack of major first-party games releases in the quarter. But there are also concerns that the PS5's earlier hardware supply issues are having a knock on effect on software sales and subscriptions, which are important if the company wants to build a "virtuous cycle" of mutually reinforcing console and game sales.
CNBC notes that the company reported an operating profit of a record 1.21 trillion yen (around $8.9 billion) for the year, with revenue in the quarter rising 35 percent to 3.06 trillion yen (around $22.5 billion).

If they were actually available, I'd buy one myself.

Nearly 3 years since release and the PS5 is still basically unobtanium here, too. I regularly see sales promoting PS5 consoles but nobody ever actually has one in stock to sell you - they just want to take a deposit and sign you up for a waiting list!

I'd love to see per-console breakdowns of the PlayStation Network subscribers, because probably >95% of that 47.4 million figure is PS4 owners. i.e.: only people getting the 19.1 million PS5 consoles sold in FY22 were the scalpers.

      The per-console breakdowns

    • They are readily available (and have been for about a year) in my small EU country (Bulgaria):

      Prices are in BGN
      • I forgot to mention, that I've had one since it was launched. I simply ordered it on ozone.bg at 1000BGN or roughly 500€ and it was delivered on launch day.
It is great, especially with the Gold subscription - I have more games than I have the time to play through. It is by far the most sensible way to play modern games, especially if you play just occasionally, like I do. I thought about upgrading my Ryzen 5 PC with new GPU and a monitor (doesn't have one currently), but just those two things will co
  • I keep on hearing about how the PlayStation 5 is now easily available, but I've still yet to see one in stores. Supposedly you can easily get them online, but I haven't really looked, because honestly, everything Sony has done has soured me on them to the point that as far as I'm concerned, I want to see the PS5 die a miserable death. I do know Sony won't sell you a PS5 through their own online store, which is amusing.

That link just brings me to a blank white page. If you search for "Sony Store" on Google though you get this website [sony.com], where Sony sells their TVs and speakers and headphones and cameras and laptops and cell phones and even the freaking aibo - but no PlayStation 5.

You're doing something wrong. That link brings me to Sony's online store specific to PS5 and lists all manner of different bundles, controllers, headsets, games, and even funky colourful panels to pimp out the PS5 they will very happily ship you when you click the buy button.

    • You must have crap stores. All my local electronics / white goods stores (best buy equivalent) have them in stock. The cheapest variant is sold out, but the next version up is about 30EUR more and comes with 3 games included.

I found mine at the local wal-mart a couple of weeks after launch.

the link the timeOday posted doesn't have "hardware" in it and is incomplete somehow.

And how many more are gathering dust after finding out there is only 13 exclusive games? [wikipedia.org]

Oh lord, that list is even funnier than I was expecting, because it includes remakes and titles that aren't out yet.

Of those 13 titles, only eight are currently out. Of those eight, three are releases of earlier games, but count as "exclusives" because they add features that are exclusive to the PS5. That's counting the Final Fantasy VII Remake as a PS5 exclusive, and I'm not sure that's accurate. I can't tell if the PS5 version is really "special" so there may in fact only be 12 exclusive games.

      If you excl

      • The PS5, XBox, and PC Gaming are all competing with specs, not any particular titles anymore.

Nintendo doesn't compete on specs, so they focus on exclusive content. They create novel hardware and then build games around that hardware.

There's no functional difference between PS5, XBox, and PC. It's just about how much money you're willing to spend to have some better graphics quality. The only key difference that most people probably don't care about are the buttons. If your language is figure based then

The important thing about the PS5 is that it also is a complete PS4, and with the vastly reduced loading times thanks to its SSD-based architecture, it is a much better PS4 than the original and its fragile, noisy optical disk system.

This means that when a PS4 start to show wear and tear, it is a valid choice for owners who want to continue to play with their games to buy a replacement PS5 instead.

      • it is a much better PS4 than the original and its fragile, noisy optical disk system

The BD drive on a PS4 is only used for games when they are installed, and a quick check when you start a disc based game after you install it Otherwise it doesn't read games from the BD drive only the hard drive.

Also the noisiest thing about a PS4 is the fan! PS4's are built like tanks like the 50001 series PS2's, not trouble prone like some other PS1, PS2 or PS3 models. And you could replace the hard disk drive in it with a SATA SSD.

That said, the PS5 IS a better way of playing PS4 games, since you can j

  • If we believe Sony, Call of Duty is the sole reason why they are even close to selling 40M PS5s.

So they should be thanking Activision for making this essential piece of software because otherwise, they would've gone bankrupt.

    • by Bahbus ( 1180627 )

Sony has too many other products and divisions to go bankrupt from one bad performer. All their divisions would need to go bad simultaneously. But if CoD is actually the only real reason the console is selling anywhere near decently, well then that's really sad, since every CoD game is the same thing over and over again with absolutely no reinvention or intriguing gameplay. Garbage game for garbage gamers.

Sony gaming has absolutely no clue or experience in what they are doing. They don't know how to make go

  • That's a whole lot of money. Notwithstanding $80 games. Thank you but no, thank you.
