Microsoft Accidentally Reveals New Disc-Less Xbox Series X Design With a Lift-To-Wake Controller

Microsoft is planning to refresh its Xbox Series X console in 2024 with an all-new design and features. The Verge reports: Codenamed Brooklin, the unannounced console refresh has been accidentally revealed in new FTC v. Microsoft documents this week. The new Xbox Series X design looks a lot more cylindrical than the existing console and will ship without a disc drive. Internal confidential Microsoft documents reveal it has 2TB of storage (up from 1TB), a USB-C front port with power delivery, and an "all-new, more immersive controller."

The new controller, codenamed Sebile, is set to be announced early next year for $69.99 and will include an accelerometer which should let you merely lift it to wake the gamepad. It has a two-tone color scheme and will support a direct connection to cloud, Bluetooth 5.2, and a presumably updated âoeXbox Wireless 2â connection. Microsoft also lists "precision haptic feedback" and "VCA haptics double as speakers" as specs for the controller. It will also have quieter buttons and thumbsticks, a rechargeable and swappable battery, and modular thumbsticks.

Inside the new Xbox Series X design, Microsoft is also adding Wi-Fi 6E support, a Bluetooth 5.2 radio, and the company is shrinking the existing die to 6nm "for improve efficiency." The PSU power will be reduced by 15 percent, according to Microsoft's document. Microsoft is targeting the same $499 launch price of the Xbox Series X. Microsoft lists a roadmap for this new Xbox Series X console and controller, alongside a refreshed Xbox Series S with 1TB of storage. I bought both first-party official and 3rd-party controller batteries, they work perfectly and seamlessly. This is far superior to the Nintendo approach of making the controller disposable. For $20, I can self-service and replace the battery if stops holding charge well, yet get the benefits of easy recharging by plugging the controller into USB.

What if the Internet is down?

My biggest concern about not having a disc drive in my Xbox is how do I play games if the Internet is down? Does it just let me play any game in offline mode without authentication? I know with my Xbox 1, I need to have the disc in the drive if I'm offline. This is 100% fine with me since I almost never connect my Xbox to the Internet anyway. I did it once last year when I bought Madden 23 but until I buy a new game, I have zero reason to actually connect to Internet.

You're the type of person they're trying to eliminate unfortunately. They want it always online, always gathering data, and they want to prohibit people from selling games to people, so each person must buy a copy from Microsoft. I don't own an XBox but I was curious but on the website at least; Digital games that support single-player and local multiplayer can be played offline on the console assigned as your home Xbox.

Where have you been? Ever since the Sony "sharing" demo, everyone's been getting rid of the disc. Xbox One was simply the first to declare reselling games dead, but Sony was happily encouraging it despite the ad.

You do know that these consoles have hard drives, right? The newest one increases the default SSD from 1TB to 2TB.

Each game, however, is subject to their own online requirements. Call of Duty multiplayer is not likely to work offline. Resident Evil 4 will run offline but achievements will not be tracked.

I get why stuff like this can be convenient, but it's also often annoying, like when my Pixel 5a wakes up when I pick it up ... and I just have to put it back to sleep before putting it in my pocket. (Yes I know I can disable lift to wake.)

My xbox one wakes itself up without any input. I turn the power strip off so I don't get woken up in the middle of the night by the power up beeps.

Wow, less functionality than the previous model, for the same price! But also: less functionaliy than a gaming PC that you can build for around as much, to play all the same games, plus decades worth of back catalog, plus emulation of basically every past system, plus the many other uses of a computer. What's the use of a console now? Not worth it.

I used to think PC gaming is best all round.
But after I got an xbox, I genuinely enjoyed being on the couch.

I still think PC is more versatile though. And I feel like I want a new PC for games suited to keyboard and mouse.

Uh. These days you can play on the couch with a PC if you want, just get a wireless controller (I even use a controller that's actually for Nintendo Switch) and connect your PC to a TV with HDMI. As an example, I have a secondary computer in my living room connected to a 52-inch TV that is a movie player/music player/console (multiple, both native pc and emulation) that I operate with a wireless keyboard and a Nintendo switch pro controller.

You get more storage - so at the same price, you can choose between an optical drive / 1 TB storage or no optical / 2 TB storage. Given that I've only played a single game from disc on my XsX, I'd probably be better off with the latter.
