Nintendo Is Making a Live-Action 'Legend of Zelda' Movie (theverge.com) 32

Nintendo has confirmed that it's working on a live-action adaptation of The Legend of Zelda, directed by Wes Ball and produced by Zelda creator Shigeru Miyamoto. The Verge reports: "This is Miyamoto. I have been working on the live-action film of The Legend of Zelda for many years now with Avi Arad-san, who has produced many mega hit films," Miyamoto said in a statement posted on X, formerly Twitter. We might be waiting a while for the movie, however; Miyamoto said, "It will take time until its completion, but I hope you look forward to seeing it." While there aren't many details on the movie itself, Nintendo says that it will be co-financed by itself and Sony, with Nintendo footing more than 50 percent of the bill.

"By producing visual contents of Nintendo IP by itself, Nintendo is creating new opportunities to have people from around the world to access the world of entertainment which Nintendo has built, through different means apart from its dedicated game consoles," the company said in a statement about the Zelda film. "By getting deeply involved in the movie production with the aim to put smiles on everyone's faces through entertainment, Nintendo will continue its efforts to produce unique entertainment and deliver it to as many people as possible."

Also curious what a guy walking around with 12 tree branches and armloads of giant mushrooms looks like in real life.

With a timeline like that, it would appear the director is looking to fund half the movie budget with clickbait.

    • he's more or less the public face of Nintendo. He's not just disallowed from talking about potential projects, Nintendo goes out of it's way to keep his personal life secret to prevent leaks.

It could still fall through (or they could get Uwe Boll to direct it). But at the very least they're going to make a real go at it.

I'm not sure what's more delusional here; claiming a revenue-bound corporation has a 'personal life' to give a shit about, or claiming that some (very human) public face of a corporation is incapable of making mistakes.

        Either way, ignorance is ignorance.

  • Thankfully, Link doesn't have a voice that they can screw up. Link's appearances on Captain N and the Super Mario Bros Super Show don't count.

Now, should he be silent in this movie? Answer: yes, that would be hilarious. Maybe do the movie from the viewpoint of everyone else in Hyrule, and Link just keeps silently popping in and out of different scenes now and then. Saving people and smashing their pots.

LINK is the "link" between the player and the other world so... the movie should leverage that to be way more original and be filmed in 1st person like so few movies have tried. Not that the whole movie has to be like that; but the director can load it up with shots. Links voice could be minimized extremely and still have it all work.

A good director could pull this off and maybe get some artistic notoriety as a result. Chris Nolan might have been able to do it? or back in his Memento days.

  • Boy, Roger Ebert goofed. If you love movies, now is the time to be alive!

      They literally did, this year

      • And it was a janky shit show. Which is why there prolly wont be a 3rd until Nintendos next console.

General praise for the game seems to speak otherwise. I would have enjoyed it more if they didn't recycle the map, but it was far from janky.

Given the production time that goes into these games, and how late the Switch is in its lifecycle, of course they won't have another original one for current hardware.

And people still buy their yearly fix of football games even though those are shit have been shit for quite a while. Doesn't matter if you can slap a big enough name on it

but it was far from janky.

I am sorry I am not impress by the game that couldn't hold 30fps. Neither could BotW but this was far worse.

            • Wow, who pissed in your Wheaties?

Personally, FPS isn't anything I care about for gaming, unless it's so bad as to be distracting. I've been playing TOTK for a couple months now and haven't encountered any serious issues, FPS or otherwise.

Maybe something's wrong with your specific hardware, bad chip or bad connection or something?

  • Lololol, sorry, someone had to say it.

    Apologies to everyone.

    • This movie is likely to fail; but I'll see it regardless and so will most everybody else... they only have to avoid being so horrible it deters the curious... and Zelda more than Mario is for the curious. Therefore, it will make serious money and be considered a financial success if not a home run.

Will it be art? will people enjoy it enough to see it again (by choice?) probably not.

Will it be fan service that rekindles emotions from the game? Probably and that is probably the intent (and biz formula) so th

  • Do you think Chris Pratt will play Zelda or Link?
    • I wish when they hire an actor for the SOLE purpose of movie promotion (like Pratt who's nothing special) they at least tested if they could play any Nintendo video game. I saw Pratt get stuck playing mario kart, where he sucked so bad you'd think he never played it before and he visibly wasn't enjoying it either. Off camera, I'd not be surprised if he admitting to disliking Nintendo...

  • So what girl are they going to have to play Link? You know it, I know it, we all know that Link can't be a man's role. Well unless it's like a 12 year old boy who can only make soft noises
