Final Fantasy 16 Producer Asks Fans Not To Make 'Offensive Or Inappropriate' Mods (ign.com) 53

An anonymous reader quotes a report from IGN: Final Fantasy 16 producer Naoki Yoshida has asked fans to please not make "offensive or inappropriate" mods upon the game's PC release tomorrow, September 17. Yoshida wouldn't comment on any specific mods he wants to see in Final Fantasy 16 in an interview with PC Gamer, though made clear what he doesn't want to see. "If we said, 'it'd be great if someone made X, Y, Z,' it might come across as a request, so I'll avoid mentioning any specifics here," Yoshida said. "The only thing I will say is that we definitely don't want to see anything offensive or inappropriate, so please don't make or install anything like that."

Mods allow players to create custom content for games, often resulting in incredibly useful gameplay changes such as the ability to play Elden Ring with friends seamlessly, or major additions such as an entire new expansion for Fallout 4 or the ability to play as custom characters in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. Due to the nature of the internet, however, many mods are also, as Yoshida put it, "offensive or inappropriate." While cheating is one thing, fellow publisher Capcom expressed concern in November 2023 that "there are a number of mods that are offensive to public order and morals" which cause damage to the property itself.

In all seriousness, if you cannot handle someone else taking your creation and jerking off to it, or imagining it in lewd way, perhaps you should find a different line of work that doesn't require you to create.
        • The could be playing BG3 and fucking bears and vampires without any mods.

  • This seems like the best way to ensure that every mod on day one is offensive and inappropriate — mods that give you a button to open your cloak and flash your opponents, weapons that look like giant phalluses, flying billboards that look like the 'f' word, and so on.

Some people exist for the sole purpose of degrading other people's lives. It's all they are, because they have nothing else to offer.

      • Degrading the life of a person that's just sitting around pressing buttons on a controller and watching colors flashing on the screen, seems like it'd be a difficult feat to perform.

Also opens the doors to developers to lock down parts of the game that they don't want modders to F-UP and make offensive to others. Just sayin'

  • Unfortunately the game comes with Denuvo anti-tamper. I don't buy games that use my resources to treat me like a criminal.

There are so many other games that don't. I play those instead.

Really, isn't that what mods are for ?

    • by gweihir ( 88907 )

Indeed. Mods are for fixing game defects and bring in the sexiness the developers did not dare to put in.

  • and my disappointment with the single mionded focus on hot chicks.
    • ... Of the first 40 mods on last updated on Nexus, all of 4 are female specific, and one of those is specific to scarves and masks. This is contrasted with 9 for Skyrim, 9 for Fallout 4, and 4 for Baldur's Gate 3.

Skyrim mods are awesome! You can get anything you want. One of over 50,000 is called Bathing Beauties of Beefcake Luxury Suites. For some of the other mods, the developers catered to whatever sexual thing your heart desired.

  • What has internet done here? Nothing to do with the issue. Due to the nature of people, that would be more precise.
  • How exactly this causes damage to the game, I assume that's the property he means?
    • How exactly this causes damage to the game

Things like this can cause reputational damage to the game/brand/franchise, i.e. the "intellectual property."

      • Two words: Streisand effect.

Remember the Hot Coffee [wikipedia.org] mod for GTA? It made the game MORE famous not less. Same thing here.

          • Take your pick:

            Incompetence.

            Crappy Content Creation.

            Furries.

Adult themes and/or maybe weird fetishes.

The intersection of Adult Themes and Furries along with the rest of the The Geek Hierarchy [fanlore.org]

        • did you read the wiki article to which you linked? It spoke of the game being outright banned in Australia due to the Hot Coffee mod, to the developer being fined $1 million, etc, the game may have become 'more famous' but they clearly lost income from that fine and the lack of (legal) sales in Australia
        • Oh, and yeah, I know all about the "Streisand Effect", but did that cause streisand to make more money? did her music become more in demand? Nope.... just lots of people who are/were too young to know that she was a singer/actress/etc now knew she had a loud voice calling out against the guys at South Park. So, yeah, she got 'more famous' but it did her no good.

I am getting sick of this ever growing and oppressive culture of being expected to walk on eggshells and even that's becoming not enough. Look lady, people are going to make content that offends your eyes and goes against YOUR values. Deal with it. That is one of the few non criminal releases people have left in this shit pot, eat you up and spit you out world we live in. And don't worry, only some people are going to make phalluses and whatnot and move on after they had their jollies. The rest are serious players who won't be engaging in such nonsense. I'm mighty tired of people trying to monster ME into walking on eggshells because of THEIR hangups, and them being offended at every little thing. Who the hell made them God? They need to piss off, the lot of them.

It's a poor translation, not what he meant.

In Japan there is a strong culture of people adapting other people's works, particularly for porn. Take any popular game or anime and there will be massive amounts of porn for it. The original creators don't seem to mind and never sue. That includes this guy and Square Enix, who tolerate the massive number of pornographic works featuring Final Fantasy characters.

The issue with game modding is twofold. First, the mods can look like they were an original part of the

What did we expect? I mean, really. When people began the whole PC marching brigade, it seemed harmless but a bit over-the-top. Then, at some point, we as a society decided that the ultimate super-power was being offended. So, some folks saw that and took advantage of it. Now, the industrious and attention seekers know that all they have to do is say that they are offended, and it's instant gratification. It's led to an entire generation of people that believe if someone calls them by a pronoun they didn't

    • Yep, a lot of people in this message thread are screaming, 'it doesn't hurt you so why shouldn't I make content specifically to offend as many people as possible!' When, in fact, it does affect people by cutting down on their revenue specifically because of what you mentioned!
  • Hey, FF designers are the ones who created Fran and I thank them for the fantasy:
"a dark-skinned Viera with long white hair and black-tipped leporine ears, and wearing armor that resembles metallic lingerie, and stiletto heels with claw motifs."
I've heard from reliable sources that thousands of game servers exist solely for the purpose of providing a place to hang out with scantily clad Viera NPCs in VR.
