Atari Limited-Edition Asteroids Watches Sell Out Instantly For 45th Anniversary

jjslash shares a report from TechSpot: Atari teamed up with luxury watch brand Nubeo to celebrate the 45th anniversary of Asteroids with a collection of five limited-edition timepieces. Each watch, originally priced at $1,650 but discounted to $499, was limited to 125 pieces -- and they sold out almost immediately. The watches feature a unique Japanese automatic movement, where three rotating discs replace traditional hands. The smallest disc, featuring the classic Asteroids spaceship, acts as the second hand, while the minute and hour hands are represented by asteroid-filled outer discs.

While they're not smartwatches, the timepieces feature Swiss Super-LumiNova glow-in-the-dark ink sitting underneath a sapphire lens within a stainless-steel case. They're water resistant up to 21 ATM (atmospheres) and have a screw-down crown, so you can show them off while at the beach or diving.

Why do people who can barely swim to save their lives always seem to care about this? My $10 Casio (knockoff) has been to 35m below and back many times without issue, but people seem to care about the "300m water resistant" label when the only reason it would ever go that deep is because their cardboard and duct-tape submarine imploded.

Same. They even have a photo of the guy twisting the knob and you know he's thinking "If only I could play this thing!" The torpedos don't even fly out.. Also I can't tell if the asteroids move, explanation is really minimal. Like someone said I can't tell time on it either. It sounds like different size asteroids might be on different rings.. whatever. It would be a neverending disappointment, even though it looks really, really cool when you stop time in a photograph.

I'd hazard a guess that it's (from the pictures on the site) ~7:53 (and 35 seconds). I'm not sure that the hour 'saucer' is correctly positioned though, as it seems a couple of degrees further clockwise than it should be...

To explain further: the outer saucer (the long hand) indicates the minutes, the inner saucer (the middle ring / the short hand) indicates the hour, and the spaceship gives the number of seconds.

So, they made 625 of these watches in total

There's a lot of examples of companies making way too many collectors items. That and the fact that many Atari fans are aware of the Atari video game burial [wikipedia.org] make a small production run a very reasonable business decision. They can always make more.

I'm a self-confessed "watch guy" and this thing looks terrible. 50mm diameter and 16mm thick is well oversized, like an Invicta Gladiator. No thanks. What seems scammy is that the specs say, "Japanese Automatic With 3 Hands Date" which raises a couple of red flags. 1) They don't state what the movement is. Is it Seiko? Is it Miyota, Citizen or Orient? 2) I can't see a date wheel anywhere on the dial. So there's a hidden date disk underneath the other spinning disks and there's a date "ghost position"? Ugh. At least spec out a no-date movement like Seiko NH38 or Miyota 9039. The other design flaw is that the crown is completely smooth by the looks of things, with no ridges or knurling. That's going to be a right pain in the ass to set - especially with crown guards and a screw-down crown. No wonder they slashed this to less than 1/3 of the original asking price.
