GTA 6 Delayed To May 2026 (ign.com) 64

Rockstar has delayed Grand Theft Auto 6 to May 26, 2026. It was due out fall 2025. From a report: In a statement, Rockstar apologized for the significant delay to the game, expected to be the biggest entertainment launch of all time.

"We are very sorry that this is later than you expected," Rockstar said. "The interest and excitement surrounding a new Grand Theft Auto has been truly humbling for our entire team. We want to thank you for your support and your patience as we work to finish the game."

"With every game we have released, the goal has always been to try and exceed your expectations, and Grand Theft Auto VI is no exception. We hope you understand that we need this extra time to deliver at the level of quality you expect and deserve. We look forward to sharing more information with you soon."

shouldn't they be adding LLM stuff?

We are to the point asking players to invest serious dollars in video rendering hardware so they can have accurate lighting physics and near photo fidelity 3d models of the game world.

But we are still supposed to have NPCs and cut scenes with entirely fixed dialog? The general direction of AAA gaming is to make the experience immersive, this is an area when GenAI could go a long way to enhancing that.

Sure... if that's where they're using it..

Not sure anything will solve the boring gameplay loop of "collect the things to do the things to trigger the things to collect more things and also stupidly long cutscenes with atrociously voiced scripts of the most generic nature."

GenAI isn't ready for this yet. The last time Rockstar tried it was with GTA 3 Remaster, and we saw how that went. And yes, that was a while ago, but then there is the Quake 2 AI demo that showed what could be, but that will be years away, and the first games that do use it will most likely not being a crowning game like GTA6 that could crash and burn hard if/when it fails in real world settings. • The dialogue tells the story. Introducing the current crop of LLMs would be a terrible player experience that would overshadow any good parts of the game. Between incorrectly interpreted input, tricking the LLM to give random spoilers for future events, missed key information because the player didn't think to ask about it, and completely hallucinated random responses it would be a train wreck.

And thats before you even consider that AI voices while much improved still don't quite sound right and have the

    • I say they're hoping that tariffs will be over by then. Sales are going to be weak in this market. Some people will be waiting for console price drops to buy new consoles, and they will also be waiting to buy new consoles before they buy new games. R* has a long history of pushing out games before they are ready, this is an excuse to make the game actually work properly at release.

      This.

An attitude of "when it's ready" makes for better games. We've had too many AAA (or is it AAAAAAAA now) crapfests that have not been given enough time in development rushed out in a buggy, unfinished state to meet some MBA enforced deadline because they spent 1/3 of the budget on advertising that can't be refunded.

It's like going to a $200 a plate restaurant and expecting an expertly cooked meal to be on the table in 15 minutes or less. They can do it but it'll be inedible.

I heard something the other day to the effect of GTA5 is still one of the most streamed games in 2025. That at least implies people are still buying it and various DLC and expansions for it.

Maybe from a long term revenue perspective it makes more sense for them to keep 6 on the shelf a bit longer

      • by pjt33 ( 739471 )

I didn't RTFA when that was on /. recently, but I vaguely recall seeing somewhere a good few months prior to that story that the majority of GTA V streaming is car races on courses which are player-crafted content. New content doesn't necessarily mean paid DLC if there's a thriving mod scene.

        • GTAO's biggest problem right now is that to access player created content, including races, is way too much a PITA. You have to use an outside app or browser, create a playlist, and then boot up the game and access that playlist.

I think this is indicative of just how toxic the gaming community has become.

If you think that's blaming the customer (to which they haven't got one of yet because it hasn't been released) then you really need to take a look at how you deal with other people. I'll give you the benefit of the doubt and believe that you are just reading too much into a single statement but it does show why developers are reluctant to engage with the community, unreasonable expectations and demands with no patience or under

    • Nah. I'm not a fan of GTA, but I'm sure the concept of random crime and hijacking cars ages a hell of a lot better than edgy 90's macho-man toilet humor.

  • With the current tariffs and many to most auto parts being imported, "GTA Parts" might be a more popular game now. :-)

  • Everyone seems to be forgetting that the PC version is already confirmed to be 1 year later than the console date, no matter when that ends up being. Also, based on online for Red Dead 2 and GTA5, it's going to make Fallout 76 looks secure and stable with no cheaters by comparison, not to mention a mobile-style manipulative pay to win hellhole. So I'm just going to ignore it.

  • Regardless of how you feel about GTA as whole - whether you like it, love it, or hate it - we have to give props to a studio willing to delay a release by 6-8 months so they can release a more polished product. Especially one with as much hype as GTA 6 has. Far too often the studios just drop whatever they've got at release date and then patch the hell out of it for the next year fixing issues that should've been ironed out before release.
