PS5 Has Now Officially Outsold Every Xbox Console Ever Released (ign.com) 35

Sony reported that PlayStation 5 sales have reached 84.2 million units, officially surpassing every Xbox console ever released. IGN reports: The PlayStation 5 is now up to 84.2 million copies sold after shifting an additional 3.9 million units during the three-month period ending September 30, Sony has announced. That's a slight increase on the 3.8 million PS5 units Sony sold during the same quarter last year, but it's an impressive result given the price of the console has actually gone up over the course of this generation, rather than come down. [...]

As an aside, unlike Sony, Microsoft does not make Xbox Series X and S sales figures public, but analysts have suggested the combined Xbox Series effort is being outsold by the PS5 by at least a factor of 2:1. The more appropriate comparison for the PS5 then, is with its predecessor, the PlayStation 4. Five years into the current console generation, the PS5 is slightly behind the PS4 (the PS4 sold-in to retailers more than 86.1 million units after five years on sale). But Sony has said this console generation is its most financially successful ever, with sales surpassing those made during the reign of all previous Sony consoles.

  • Man, I just want to use one as a workstation because they are kind of cool looking as a desktop. It would be super nice to dual-boot one to Linux or FreeBSD and just run it as a daily driver. When they are obsolete they should be cheap. With Sony subsidizing them to sell games, they are probably still cheap.
    • I don't think Sony is subsidizing the hardware. Both Sony's and Microsoft's consoles are basically PCs. You could put together one with similar performance for around the same price. Both are 8-core Zen 2 CPUs and RDNA2 graphics integrated on the chip with 16 GB of RAM shared between the CPU and GPU. Nothing particularly special and AMD sells APUs that are even beefier with more modern cores if you wanted an integrated solution. Unfortunately they're not selling them as a standalone product so you'd have to

Or buy a "for parts" busted PS5, whip out the dremel, and mount a mini PC of some sort inside of it.

Check eBay for the BC250, its basically the rejects of the PS5 APU (binned lower than Sony wants in their consoles), used for "crypto", and now being sold for pennies on the dollar on the used market since they're not good for that anymore.

Even supposing you could hack one to run Linux or FreeBSD, the performance would probably be very mediocre because it's unlikely there is support for the bespoke CPU & graphics functionality it contains as well as other drivers you'd need to make it work properly.

I doubt Sony are subsidizing them at this point in the console's life. Sony are known for iterating through consoles through revisions that cut costs so maybe the first revision is subsidized but subsequent ones aren't. Models like the digita

Obsolete? I still use my PS3.
      • Likewise, a lot of people use obsolete Mac computers, and a lot of people (including myself) use obsolete Nintendo Entertainment System consoles.

As I understand it, the "obsolete" label applies to a video game console once its manufacturer is no longer certifying new games for it. For example, Shakedown: Hawaii is the last Wii disc game in Europe, the last Wii U disc game in North America, and the last PlayStation 3 game. See list of last licensed games by console [fandom.com].

  • Damn.

  • Bad headline (Score:5, Informative)

This is a misleading headline, making it sound like more PS5s have been sold than all Xbox models combined. What this article is really saying is that more PS5 consoles have been sold than any individual generation of Xbox console. So more PS5s have been sold than Xbox 360, and more than Xbox One, etc.

Less PS5s have been sold so far (84 million) than any previous generation. The most popular was the PS 2, having sold 160 million.

    • Disagree. Headline doesn't stay "combined". That's the magic word that your brain stuck into the headline, for whatever reason.

I do agree it could be better worded, but most headlines fall into that category.

      • No, I hit that same ambiguity. "Every Xbox Console Ever Released", carries an implication of combination. Every Xbox ever implies exactly that - the total number of Xbox consoles.

The PS2 stayed on the market for years after the PS3 and up until about 2014, after the PS4 came out. I still play PS2 games. They were more focused on being fun to play. I just wish the AI in sports games were less focused on cheating to beat the player.
