Epic's Fortnite Now Free To Play on Microsoft's Xbox Cloud Gaming for Mobile, Desktop, Console (cnet.com) 27

Since Microsoft's Xbox Cloud Gaming launched two years ago, more than 10 million people worldwide have streamed games through the service. That number's likely to jump a bit higher as a result of a partnership Microsoft struck with Epic Games to offer Epic's hit title Fortnite for free through Xbox Cloud Gaming. From a report: The move will effectively let people play Fortnite in a way similar to how they stream videos from companies like Netflix, regardless of how beefy their gaming device is. Unlike previous efforts, Microsoft said this agreement applies to anyone who wants to play, with or without a subscription. Gamers will be able to play on an iPhone or iPad or a device powered by Google's Android software, even though both Apple and Google have banned Fortnite from their respective app stores amid an ongoing legal dispute. "This is just the beginning for us -- we're going to learn, implement feedback, and in time look to bring even more free-to-play titles to players through the cloud," Microsoft said in a statement. The service will be available for free in 26 countries, including Australia, Brazil, Japan, Mexico and the US.

  • Xbox Cloud Gamining is not free, and it's not supported on most operating systems.

Oh, did you mean it's free for people already paying $15/month for Xbox Cloud Gaming who are running Windows 10 or 11?

Interesting definition of "free for PC". . .

That's just it. You don't have to pay for Xbox Cloud Gaming to play. You just go to xbox.com/play. You do have to sign in to a MS account, but that is it.
      • It doesn't work.

I have an old MS account I rarely use and signed on with that (without lastpass I wouldn't have even remembered the password.) It then complains that my browser (which is firefox) isn't supported. Ok, whatever, but I'm not using fucking edge. Then it complains that I don't have a controller. AFAIK fortnight on PC doesn't require a controller, so why does this? And if it's supposed to work with mobile, how the fuck does that even work? I doubt most mobile users carry around a controller.

          It doesn't work.

It does work, you just don't like it. That's fine, but it's not the same thing. First, it does work in Firefox. It's just not supported. I don't know how well it works, as I don't have a controller, but it does work.

Second, yes it does require a controller. I don't believe that is a universal restriction for Xbox cloud gaming, but the streaming is predominately done from Xboxes. That means controllers. As for people bringing controllers with them, they would if they wanted to play games with them. I hav

That's under the assumption that the underlying hardware is able to communicate through the OS and then through the browser. There are all kinds of things that can go wrong in this, button mapping among them. The fact is that you don't know whether it works with your specific controller.

Second, yes it does require a controller.

They very obviously failed to make that clear. All they state is that your experience is degraded without a controller. It doesn't say that it won't work. That is not the same thing as saying that you can't do anything at al

You're reaching to defend yourself, when you don't have a leg to stand on. Every single response you provided is shit. Plus, you cannot even admit that you disparaged controller users. Your own fucking words.. "I think that only people who are slow in the head can actually enjoy playing FPS games on a controller." Go be a fucking tool somewhere else.

      It is free for Fortnite.

And I would expect more F2P games (Call of Duty, etc) to jump onto the wagon.

Except, that isn't what is going on here. sorta. MS is opening up their paid for cloud gaming service to allow non-subscribers to play some free games.
      • Indeed. Old free game still free on new platform.
        • by Xenx ( 2211586 )
I gave your first comment the benefit of the doubt. You're either intentionally acting the idiot, or you actually are one. Either way, you're oversimplifying things to the point where your comment is irrelevant.
          • Explain it to me as I do not understand: Fortnite is free to play on all platforms including PC as far as I know. Epic makes their money selling cosmetics. It is now free to play on a subscription service that is also on PC. And? I do not see the significance.
            • by Xenx ( 2211586 )
The significance is that you don't have to pay for a subscription to play it on said subscription service. In other words, you're getting free use of the service as well when playing said game(s).
              • Again what is the point? I do not have to have any subscription service to play Fortnite today. The fact that I need to sign up for a service to get a subscription to play a game for free that I can already get for free. I just added steps to get a free game.

                  Again what is the point?

See my previous reply. If you're too thick to understand there are use cases beyond what is relevant to you, that is on you.

                  • This announcements means I have more steps to get Fortnite for free when I can get it for free RIGHT NOW. If you do not understand why no one thinks that is significant, may be the problem is you and not the multiple people pointed this out.
                    • by Xenx ( 2211586 )
No, it just means you're not capable of understanding you(they) are not the only person(s) in the world. It doesn't personally matter to me, both because I don't care about Fortnite and because I don't do much cloud or console gaming. However, I understand that there are people out there they would want to play the game from their iPhone/iPad or cheap laptop.. or whatever else.

You seem to be the only one on this forum who thinks this is a big deal. It is not. You install Fortnite today with or without this subscription. Read the room buddy.

Then your understanding is quite poor. Fornite is not available on iOS device anymore AND anyone can install Fortnite on any laptop without this subscription. Extra steps for no reason.

I never once said it's a big deal. I only countered that it means nothing. VERY different. Maybe you need to learn to read what people are saying.

People CAN play it on the iPhone/iPad if they use Xbox cloud streaming. And yes, they can install it on a laptop directly, but I specifically mentioned on a cheapo laptop. One that doesn't have the performance adequately play the game.

How hard is it for you to understand such basic concepts?

EVERYONE here has said it's not a big deal. If you are saying it's not a big deal then you've argued against yourself all the while insulting EVERYONE else. So it's not a big deal but everyone else who said it's not a big deal is "an idiot".

I responded to someone that completely dismissed it. I only said there was more to it than it being the same free game. Because there is. It's increased access to said free game, and soon other free games.

Windows 10 October 2020 Update or later, iOS 14.4 or later, Android 6.0 or later.

BY YOUR OWN ADMISSION Xbox Cloud Gaming requires Windows 10. Fortnite on PC requires only Windows 7. That alone destroys your argument. Please research what are the actual requirements. You cannot use any cheapo laptop to play Fortnite on Xbox Cloud Gaming.

No, you appear to be confused about what service is actually being discussed here. If you want to argue about the latency, that would be reasonable. However, at least in the cases I mentioned previously, the choice is between not playing and playing with streaming latency.

I am not confused. You simply do not know the actual requirements and either are lying about them or desperately trying to spin facts because you did not bother to

No, I said he was acting like an idiot OR is an idiot. I said he was acting like one because he literally ignored what I wrote and just tossed out a useless response. Also, I never called everyone else an idiot.

I checked the hardware requirements of Fortnite vs Windows 10. Fortnite has higher requirements. So, I'm absolutely correct. The hardware requirements are higher for Fortnite. That said, most computers sold since Win10 released probably meet both requirements. However, there would be a tradeoff. Run
