Sega Is Making Another Mini Mega Drive, Now With CD Games (theverge.com) 26

An anonymous reader quotes a report from The Verge: Sega has announced a sequel to its miniature Mega Drive (otherwise known as the Sega Genesis), and this one will feature both cartridge games and titles from the Mega CD add-on. In total, the tiny console will feature 50 built-in games, including the likes of Silpheed, Shining Force CD, Sonic the Hedgehog CD, Virtua Racing, and Shining in the Darkness. Unfortunately, as of now the device has only been announced for Japan; it's expected to launch on October 27th for 9,980 yen (about $75).

Looks like M2 are on board to do the work again, which is good news. M2 are known for their excellent emulation and updates of games. They actually care about good image quality, accurate sound, and quality of life features.

  • Do any of the included games not work in emulators, or is this just another dust collector?

    • The full list of games has not yet been released, but it is supposed to include some previously unreleased games and apparently one entirely new one. I didn't get one but the previous one apparently had Darius and Tetris as unreleased titles along with the first English translation of at least Monster World 4.
  • Do not hire at@games to do it again.
We know it is bad, you know it is bad, everyone knows it is bad.
Just get some open source emulator like blast em, shove in an cheap ARM SoC and bob's your uncle.

    • You're confused, Mega Drive Mini was handled by M2, not AtGames, and was consequently pretty great as far as mini consoles go. The AtGames Genesis things were indeed terrible, Mega Drive Mini was not.

As the other person pointed out, they dumped AtGames and went with M2 for emulation on their new Mini -- which was released the other year.

I've been really happy with mine. I turn it on almost every day. It sounds great and it performs great. For reference, I have 3 Genesis in my office, and one of those AtGame abominations -- it was given to me.

I did mod my Mini to add more games and bump up the clock speed on its CPU, but even before that the performance was not an i
  • Seriously, Sega needs to get back in the console business. I'd buy the console in an instant. They need to stop with the miniature versions of the Genesis and Game Gear and make something new, something that's not a rehash of previous consoles.

The Dreamcast was one of my favorite consoles of all time. It had some great local multiplayer games.

Dreamcast was great. My friend had one, and that summer we played so much 4 player Virtua Tennis and Tony Hawk. After playing Tony Hawk so much and for so long on a Dreamcast, I couldn't play it on a Playstation, the framerate was lower, the graphics looked like crap and the animations were chunky... I never could grasp why people were falling head over heels for the Playstation when the Dreamcast beat it in every possible way.

Ha, I also put a lot of time into multiplayer Virtua Tennis. Far more fun then I ever thought a tennis video game would ever be.

It's too expensive for them to get back into now. They would have to buy something from an ODM since there's not going to be any investor enthusiasm. And then people could just buy the same shit from someone else.

When AMD brings out their ng AIOs then maybe it will be more feasible for other entrants to spit out a console, but is there room in the market for another lower-end console when Nintendo already inhabits that space? Probably not.

      • I guess I never thought of Nintendo as low end. I also never bought a game system based on it's graphics. Heck, today all game systems look amazing. I just think of Nintendo as the gatekeeper to Mario and Zelda and that along makes those consoles worth the price.

Then again, I say that having not owned a Nintendo since N64. I know my super nintendo and n64 still work. More then I can say for my xbox or xbox 360. My refurb. xbox 1 is still working.

So for me, it's really hard to call Nintendo low end when thei

If you never bought a game system based on its graphics then Nintendo has almost always been low end. Literally there are only two times any of their game systems has been more than the competition (any short periods where they were first to market aside) and one is when the SNES had more graphics manipulation capabilities than the genesis. ISTR that the genesis could display more stuff at once, but the SNES could do scaling and rotation so much faster that it just wound up kicking it in the dick when it ca

What would sega gain from this?

One of the reasons why Sega's consoles were good was because they were cut down versions of their arcade machines - other than the master system, that is. But the Genesis/Mega drive was a reduced version of their arcade machines of the t

    • Why? They do not have the library of games to make a console worth buying.
They have what, Sonic, and thats really it.
  • Dear Sega,

Please use the proceeds to make a new Sega console.

    Thanks.

  • And yet, somehow the system will fail again!
    Grrrr!
I thought we MIGHT at least recoup a few million dollars from the aging neckbeards.

Retro video gaming can ONLY go UP in value.

    Kids LOVE old games.
