    Half the fun is actually being there, with real people.
  • People looking to save some money on transportation from
    DFW (or Love Field) might want to look into DART [dart.org]
    (Dallas Area Rapid Transit). As there is no direct route from
    the airports to Mesquite, you will have to switch buses a few
    times, but the whole trip will cost less that $5.00.

    This option is reserved for people with an adventurous spirit
    as the whole DART system is confusing and the possibility
    exists that you may get lost. DART does have a Customer
    Assistance Line, and they can help you plot a course.
    Their number is (214) 979-1111.
  • If you go, could you ask an employee when the OSX and/or Altivec ports will be out? I haven't gotten an answer via e-mail. Seems these have been promised to us Mac users for a (seeming) eternity. I think the PS2 has been getting all the developer time lately.

    hey mother superius'... how about you read rantou's fucking comment instead of seeing someone mention the word 'racist' or 'mexican' and automatically feeling like someone's a victim. people decide to commit crimes. nobody can force anyone to do something against their morals.

    if you want to shove a bag over your head and walk around Dallas, go right ahead. personally, i thank rantou for the heads-up. whether or not there's mexicans or indians, i'd like to know where not to go because of crime or drug issues.

  • I'm not saying women don't like to shop. I agree; some rules are dumb, ie drafting and car insurance charging us men more.

    I'm arguing that he's saying that the mall is for girls. Maybe if he had said "my girlfriend/wife" or "my daughters" it wouldn't be such a blanket statement. He seems to be saying, "there's a mall. Not that I care. Mall's are stupid. They're for women" in that he's distancing himself from the mall and designating it for females.

  • My bike was stolen in Edina, Minnesota. It was locked up and everything. Edina is an extremely rich suburb. I've never even seen a black person there. Nor a Mexican, not an Indian. I live in a neighborhood with many Mexicans (and other Hispanics as well) and it's never been stolen before.

    I realize he was making a point about crime, but he also was passing off nonwhites as crime. i.e. "mexicans" and "the neighborhood with Indians and blacks"... is that supposed to make me want to stay away?

  • Joe Lieberman launched a Senatorial effort to prevent such meeting from happening. He was quoted as saying, "these people have no morals. If they were Jewish, they wouldn't feel the need to 'frag' each other. The bill would also enact the enformcement of morality in public schools. Children should be taught what is right and what is wrong. These parties where kids pretend to kill each other are ruining our society."

  • Yeah, his car got stolen. THAT'S IT?? holy crap, that's pretty much it for most of the major cities in the U.S., Canada, Europe, hell, you better move to Nunuvut! And yes, he IS racist, because he mentions ethnicity as a factor by itself, ie. he seems to have a problem with it. What the hell do you THINK he means when he says that Mesquite is not as bad as South Dallas because there are not as many MEXICANS. As far as I am concerned, his post should have been moderated down as "Inflammatory, Inappropriate, or Offensive ".
  • Pack your bags for Mesquite. Seeing these type of games in the past, or more accurately, seeing these games pass me by, has brought me to wonder why in this age of the global internet, I can't walk down the street and join up with a few of my friends to compete in the New Zealand Q3 tournament, then jump the pacific on a low latency line (hm ... 10000 miles max to Texas, @ speed of light = 40 ms lag + say 100% overhead for switching etc. = 80 ms lag = playable) and compete in a global championship. Why is location still a binding factor in network activities, specificlly gaming, but I'm quite confident that I could think of other things with some time. Just because the population base of an area is not large enough to support these events doesn't mean that we couldn't still have say 100 people from the local area, linked up to 50 other groups of 100 people = 5050 people => Low Latency WAN Party. It would conserve the experience of a gaming party, as well as give the opportunity to many other people. Anyway, hm ... 12:30am on a Saturday night and I'm posting on /. Sad.

  • That it may be... but for a place that is expecting the number of gamers that will undoubtedly show up, it would make more sense to do it in some major city. Maybe Houston, or Austin. Hell, maybe even Las Vegas or LA.

    The point is, does such a little city have the infrastructure to support something like this? ie Hotel space, restaurants and a convention center that's large enough? Or is Mesquite some sprawling metropolis that I have just never heard of before?

  • OK, i guess i really SHOULD look at the website... on closer inspection (and looking at the mapquest map on the site) it reveals that the place is pretty much within the urban sprawl of Dallas. So that does seem reassuring. I was having images of some quite little hick town suddenly being over-run with tens of thousands of quake-playing geeks. It would be total chaos.

  • Last year there were a total of 18 women in the BYOC area...as opposed to 2,100 men...He was obviously taking into account the very HIGH ratio differences in male to female attendance and then thinking 'women love to travel and all these guys can't be alone in life so they must be at that mall I saw coming in'

    Why not use all that energy you got to argue about the starving kids under the overpasses in your city and ask the Save the Children foundation why we are feeding kids in other countries and letting our own starve?

  • We have some of the best Network Engineers coming from all over the world to build the lan that is the backbone of QuakeCon. They will be starting work on it 4 days prior to the opening of the doors.

    And guess what? Every person that is on the staff and volunteer staff do this for free or actually pay out of their pocket.

    And I can't see anyone bitching about 1ms pings. I saw a peak of 28ms ping during peak gaming last year, and thats with alot of peeps running their own servers on the lan.

    BTW - Don't bother bringing any Network equipment other than a NIC for your comp. The other stuff will not be allowed in. Leave it in your hotel room. Not even patch cables. We will supply everything else network related.
  • Check out www.hatlan.com for our weekly events. The lan party, HatLan of Anaheim, Ca., is trying to go beyond the limit of garage parties. We've got a big retail/industrial space, avail. 7 days a week for 75 guys and are involved with being a gaming club with events beyond the normal realm of lan parties. Here is an example with the coming week's events: The 5/19 weekend is going to be major fun. Friday some of the Admins are going to E3 regaled in their new "Weekly lan games: www.hatlan.com" shirts and armed with stacks of flyers. Friday night is our normal HatLan. Saturday is partner lan Shagg's Action Half-Life and Q2 group joining our group. Sunday 5/20 is a LAN vs. LAN: Clan NT's lan party will challenge us, Party vs. Party, with 15 of their guys vs. 15 HatLan guys in a Quake3 30 person CTF game! For those of you that have been living in a cave, NT has been running weekly lans since Q1 and has been featured on NPR in a news story. Our "Get a REAL game tournament" is still waiting for the promotional materials from ID and any response from the Unreal Tourn. people.
  • With all those quakers in one place, ISP tech support lines wil be dead. When I was doing cable tech most calls were gamers bitching about their ping.

  • Just for all you random /.ers out there who are curious about these kinds of things, Mesquite is the kind of town where the star tailback can throw someone down two flights of stairs and not worry about any kind of disciplining from the administration. How might I know this, you may ask? Because, dear friends, *I* got thrown down two flights of stairs by the star tailback. My sin was smoking on the 2nd floor balcony of the high school. Said halfback disapproved of my behavior and showed me his disapproval by launching me down the stairs.

    He got 2 detentions. I got a sprained shoulder. When we went to the office the office helper flirted with him. "Bitch, you want this fucking rube?" I remember thinking. 'Course, he *was* a football player. That means he has a big dick!
    We would have sued, but we couldn't even begin to afford the court fees and shit. Plus, well, I was a freshmen and didn't want to rock the boat.

    So! Come to QuakeCon, then LEAVE. I graduated from high school there and haven't been back unless absolutely requried. Say, for a QuakeCon. If you want to wander around the DFW area there are much better places to do it.

SouthEast Dallas (Balch Springs) is almost as bad as South Dallas, except there aren't drug dealers on every corner. etc..."

I would say, also, that for food, there is an excellent selection in Mesquite. There is a CompUSA store there, a Best Buy, and a mall (for the girls, of course). There is a lake down IH30 (Lake Ray Hubbard) that has several parks (for picnics), and all kinds of goodies. I would recommend, though, possibly getting reservations for a hotel in Plano, Richardson, or Addison. Plano is the farthest from Mesquite, and Richardson, I would say, is the closest. Addison has the Galleria, which is very expensive to stay at from what I hear, but they have a parking garage and all.

    On a more serious note, and this may be redundant by now, Id Software started in Mesquite. Mesquite is a suburb of Dallas, which is where I live. There's a mall close-by, lots of places to eat and shop, and a few hotels. It would probably be worth it to get a rental car, since taxis in Dallas are expensive and hard to find (unless you're at the airport or downtown), and Dallas is a big, sprawling place. If you don't spend all of your time at the convention center, you may want to check out Guide Live [guidelive.com] for things to do, places to eat, etc.

    ObNostalgia: When making Doom 2, Id took up residence in the only tall business building in Mesquite at the time, just off of I-635 and Town East Blvd. I remember once they started making money, you could drive by on the highway and see a couple Ferrari's and a Jaguar or two parked outside. :-)

    .... QuakeCon is held in Mesquite, TX as that is the home of id Software. The biggest advantadge of being close to id is easy access to id employees. They come to QuakeCon to see how much you guys enjoy playing their games, and to play a little themselves.

    And make no mistake, Carmack can frag with the best of them.

    The facilities we use for QuakeCon are tremendous. The Hampton Inn is the hotel connected to the Convention Center we've used the past two years ('99, '00). There are several other hotels within a 5 minute drive that offer other options at different rates.

    Mesquite is on the East side of the Dallas Metro area. Depending on where you're coming from you have two options for flights. DFW is a HUGE airport, but is on the far West side of Dallas. American Airlines hubs out of DFW, finding an affordable direct flight should be fairly easy. There are shuttle services that can take you to and from your hotel, but you'll want to call your hotel to arrange one. Cab rides are very expensive from DFW.

    Love Field is a smaller airport, but its a lot closer to the event. However Southwest controls nearly 90% of the gates at that airport. So your range of airline options are somewhat limited. If you're flying Southwest though, its the only way to go. Also, a cab ride from here is probably going to be 1/3 of what it is from DFW.

    Religious factions with assistance from MADD, RNC, Britains BBC, ELF, EFF, EPIC, ACLU, and 50 million other acronyms you never heard of, announced today the creation of another acronymed organization set to make its debut at Quakecon.

    Dubbed HAVOC, or Homosapiens Against Violence On Computers, the group is targeting Quakecon in efforts to halt millions of geeks from "fragging" each other into oblivion.

    "We shouldn't educate our children on what is and what isn't violent in society. The process is simple, attack the gaming industry, porn industry, poisonous media outlets, and rap music, in order to make the world safer. Why the hell would I want to speak to my kid?" stated an angry parent known as Hilda.
    The group is hoping to pass out buttons, stickers, and T-Shirts of Barney the purple dinosaur in hopes of circumventing the angers of millions of video gamers.
