Featured in the game are a number of easter eggs. One of which happens on April 1st, which you jack the car you've been wanting for a while, and it immediately turns into a Ford Pinto the second you step into it.

    • This is slashdot. It's hard to take this site seriously ANY day where the editors post duplicate stories that THEY posted while the other is still on the front page (and I'm not talking about today either).
  • ...RockStar should take that idea and run with it! Vice City is great, but after this long, it's starting to get old.

  • What a fucking excellent idea.

I hope this becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy, as distant as it seems. Great joke, but I actually think this would be a fantastic setting for a GTA game.

    • Interestingly enough, I BELIEVE that the third city mentioned in the original GTA literature was San Andreas, which is likely either Las Vegas or Los Angeles. The other two were (interestinlgy enough) Vice City and Liberty City.

This MAY turn out to be true, at least to some extent. I can't really base it on anything other than the literature (which is just hearsay from IGN), but it's definitely worth considering.

I also found it interesting that there weren't any "see you in :: Next GTA Game City Goes Here

Who is Frank Miller? What is "Sin city"? Perhaps a story should include such salient facts?
    • more importanlt, "whats the date?"

seriously, if you don't know who Frank Miller is, find a copy of "dark knight returns", and read it.
      then read "sin city".

yes Dark Knight is a comic, but it has great art. I have never lent a copy out where the person didn't enjoy it, and no I am not a 'Comic guy'.

    • Actually, you're going to have problems for a whole month as real news orginazations, which have cut staff to the bone and no longer use fact-checkers, get duped by online April Fool's jokes and recycle them as actual news. It'll be bad for a while and then peter out, but even nine months from now one of these fake stories will pop up at a credible news site.

Drive around at 15 miles an hour with your turn signal blinking, make left turns from the right lane, periodically jam on the accelerator instead of the brake... I'd like to see a Maxis/Rockstar collaboration...

Two players: The benevolent mayor building up his vision of a city, while the Mafia Don works to bring it down with crime.
    • Nah, just one player, trying to make this city the most successful by any means necessary. Not getting enough taxes to pay for police? Go collect some protection money. Slums getting too dangerous to do your taxi missions in? Time for urban renewal.

You can use it to map tiles like any other zone, except that for realism is has to be attached to an industrial or commercial zone. Because it's legit, the city tresury gets a cut of the action.

It'd be the biggest simoleon maker in Maxis history.

When I first read it, I read it as "GTA: Sim City". I thought, damn, that would be cool. Create a city in Simcity 4000, then export it to GTA, and run around killing stuff. Kind of like "Streets of Sim City", only with more mindless violence. But alas, same old game, new city.
    • Or better yet, create a simcity and watch it divide into gangs and let the gangwars ensue!
    • I read it as "GTA: Sim City".

Of course, everyone who bought the original Sim City were thinking the same thing, except with Sim and Sin transposed in the opposite way, the joke being that their minds were dirty and not geekish, rather than geekish and not dirty as you propose. Furthermore, it can be shown the two are not naturally opposed but possibly reconciled through a modern synthesis etcetera and so forth ad absurdum ad nauseam...
    • When I first read it, I thought it was "GTA: My wife is the biggest bitch in history and I should spend all the money in the checking account to spite her."

I can't seem to see anything that says this is just a prank, so if it is, it's a very poor one. Why wouldn't they do something like this? It's a good idea and apparently alot of people want to see it happen. It's also completely feasible, as the engine already exists, so it's just a matter of setting/plot/graphics. Also, this is about the lamest holiday ever to celebrate, and Slashdot is taking it way too far. I played a prank on my co workers, today. I didn't play 15 throughout the day, 4 of which were the same one.
    • "the real site is down" yeah, they're going to announce it today and the real site is down. Whatever.
    • The existence of another GTA game has been known ever since the Rockstar Games financial conference call. Furthermore, Rockstar Games has put out GTA games for the last two years around that time of the year. There's no reason to suspect that they wouldn't put out another one.

Also, Rockstar Games' webserver was slaughtered when they released the original GTA for free, so the "slashdotted" nature of the site speaks nothing about the truth of this news. Shacknews also is quite reputable.

    • I can't seem to see anything that says this is just a prank, so if it is, it's a very poor one.
From "whois -h whois.enom.com gtasincity.com", we see that the domain contact is some random guy at a UK hosting site, who has an aol.com email address. From "whois -h whois.register.com gtavicecity.com", we see that the domain contact is... the administrator for Rockstar Games.

So, you may not see anything that says this is just a prank, but I sure do.
    • It's another April Fool's joke, it's just not Slashdot's. I did have to read the article a while to be sure, though.
    • if it is, it's a very poor one. Why wouldn't they do something like this? It's a good idea and apparently alot of people want to see it happen.

Which is part of why it IS a good prank. While it didn't fool me (I'm too cynical to believe anything that nice would happen, if they did this, next thing you know pigs fly and Lucasarts goes back to making great adventure games), if a prank like this gets you to believe it, and then lets you down, it's done it's job.

  • Or is it [ign.com]?
  • I'm just wondering ... I mean, one good april fools joke is fine, two is cool, three's getting a little tired ... four's a crowd. There must be some serious news out there, and I'd rather not have to sift myself through other less reliable sources (the register, various blogs, news.com.com.com (shiver)) to get my daily fix.

I'd like to see a few regionalized GTAs, especially one in the former Soviet capital about a year or two after the fall of the USSR when anything and everything was for sale (maybe it's still that way?). Maybe another one for Berlin during the height of the Cold War or Tokyo in the late 80s. In other words, huge metro areas like Vice City only larger and with more adventures behind them.
    • You should try "The Getaway". It's not as free form as GTA:VC as you have to follow the missions as they are given to you (as opposed to VC, where if a mission is bugging you, there are a few submissions and a bunch of sub tasks you can concentrate on instead). But it has the actual city of London, and a dark plot with great voice acting. I was pretty blown away by this game.

      Vanity City (AKA LA)
      Gluttony City (AKA Houston)

      More seriously...
Bay City (San Francisco/LA... Triads, Yakuza, Male prostitutes, Hippies, .coms)
Motor City (Detroit/Pittsburgh/Chicago - Inner industrial City, corrupt unions/industrials)
Border City (San Diego/Tiajuana or El Paso/Juarez - drug and immigrant smuggling, from both sides)
Liberty City (New York, any time in history - go nuts)
    • Hell yeah...cruisin' round the Kremlin in a stolen Lada, working job for the Russian mafia. Good idea.
      • You ever been to moscow? You aint cruisin' anywhere there I tell you. When the roads aren't blocked with trafic they're blocked with snow. Also the police there are right bastards, stopping people at random, searching cars and asking for bribes. On the other hand perhaps it would be perfect.

Though i owe rockstarr games a big debt, great games, much mis spent time :-)

Are you sure it isn't true [ign.com]?

Now I'm not saying it is absolutely, 100%, without a doubt, unequivocally true but the page linked to above is dated December 06, 2002. That's a long build-up for what would be a mediocre (at best) joke.
    • All of this (what I think of as a) myth about "GTA: Sin City" could have been started at one source of people just speculating and making something up. I have heard the "Sin City" joke many of times from people who read a forum post saying "Yeah ITS SIN CITY" followed usually by a bogus release date. Logically, it should be based in San Andreas. And I've learned not to pay attention to anything from IGN (or gamespy alike). Its ultimately your decision on what to believe, But I just think "GTA Sin City" is

I want to be able to decimate part of a city (or all of it!) with a nice phat explosion. It'd be great for police standoffs: set up a nuke, then fly out in a helicopter, and detonate it from the other side of the city... BOOM!

The quote in the writeup on Shacknews pretty much confirms this (or alternately, makes Frank Miller look like an ass) for claiming to have been "a fan of Rockstar since the first GTA". Of course, there was no Rockstar when the first GTA was released.
