Metal Gear Solid for GameCube Announced 41

Xs writes "GameSpot.com has confirmed the new Metal Gear Solid title for GameCube titled, Metal Gear Solid: Twin Snakes. The game sports the original MGS plot, but with totally revamped graphics. Plus, the game is being supervised by both Hideo Kojima and Shigeru Miyamoto! Sounds pretty awesome - hopefully they will add more than just the upgraded graphics." This was one of the best games around back when the Playstation was all the rage. With the resources of the GameCube thrown at this game, it could be gorgeous to behold.

Metal Gear Solid for GameCube Announced

  • I almost bought a PSX just for MGS. I didn't end up getting it, but I do have a 'cube, so this is a great game to have ported (I'll be in line when it comes out)!

And having Miyamoto oversee the production? Expect to have the extra 'fun' factor put in (the guy is a sheer genius, but I don't have to tell you guys that)!!

Could be good, but it would be nice if they produced a new story every now and then, instead of rehashing the same game years later on every platform...
  • While I was in college, my brother had a PS1 back home in Houston. When I would go home for a break or a weekend, it was MGS all day for me. What a waste of a weekend! I should have been boozing it up with my buddies.

I'm glad they are releasing it for Gamecube, but I hope they throw in some extras. Since I've played and beaten the game several times, in near record time, I hope they throw in some cool extras(multiplayer? Special traning missions? Alternate endings besides the 2 standard ones? ) Just some
    • They'll probably releast a "Substance" version for PS2 and XBox, when they realize that not everyone has enough money to buy 3 game consoles and GC has a relatively small market share, compared to the XBox/PS2 combo.

At least they better, or I'm just SOL. I'm not buying a GC.
      • Actually, if you look at last months profits for all three systems, PS2 and XBox are down, while Nintendo surged forward. Don't underestimate the power of older gamers that want to play Metroid and Zelda again...
Nintendo still has a very large crowd (its just the PS and Xbox has most of the teenage market). And now that the 'cube will be only $99, expect even more people to jump on the bandwagon.

My opinion is that when it comes down to oldschool, the emulation is where it's at. GC Zelda and Metroid releases have added little to the series. However, if anything is really helping GC, it's the GBA's stellar success.

Of course, we all know that Konami has weaseled out of exclusivity. My friend has a copy of MGS2:Substance that says "Only on X-Box", and I have a copy of the PS2 Substance.
          • My friend has a copy of MGS2:Substance that says "Only on X-Box"

unless it's bungie, that phrase means "Only on X-Box for about 6 months, then if it sold well, it will be ported" (see: Splinter Cell)
          • I totally agree. My SNES is dead and has not lived for the past 2 years. But with ZNES I can relive those memories again! Now, getting a rom or 2 with 50 pop ups. Thats a challenge.
            • http://www.omlclassics.com USED to be the greatest site for SNES and Genesis ROMs. A few popups, but it has a huge selection and USED to have good transfer speeds. But you're liable to get on nowadays and find all of the server mirrors down, or only the slow ones up.

I play more NES titles. That's more of my childhood. I didn't get SNES until 3 years after it came out. By the time I got 4 good games, N64 came out. B'sides, Original Castlevania is hardcore.
      • Remember this game is Kojima's baby, and with the legendary Miyamoto, both fiercely japanese developers where the Cube is doing exceedingly well. Likewise, with one of the producers on the project being the Holy Messiah of Nintendo, it is likely that lawyers were paid tens of thousands of dollars to draw up contracts preventing any sort of MGS 1.2 on competing systems.

        Sorry, you're SOL.

Nintendo has figured out that if you flog your old wares in new forms every few years, you can maintain a steady stream of income. Let's recap:
    • Game & Watch Gallery series brings their 1980s Game & Watch devices to the GameBoy and then GameBoy Color and then GameBoy Advance. Further, you can get keychain [curmudgeongamer.com] versions of the same games (although they may have discontinued them now).
    • E-Reader cards with rehashed NES games.
    • SNES games reworked for the GBA, including a remake of SNES Zelda.
    • Port of Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time as a bonus for GameCube Zelda preorders
    • Remake of Resident Evil for GameCube using all new graphics and some new features.
    • Rereleases of Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 3 for the GameCube at the outrageous price of $40 each. Very little, if anything, updated since the DreamCast versions of these games.

The RE games situation is a bit strange, but since when has Capcom not been guilty of milking their franchises? The remake of RE 1 I think was to make the story of 1 mesh better with the rest of the game series (and possibly the film).

    • The RE remake was astounding. As someone who values high-quality graphics, I was litterally knocked over by how good it looked. I have no problem buying it, as I never owned the original. Based on the strength of it, I bought Eternal Darkness, RE 2 and 3 (2 first on the DC, then traded in and bought for GCN), RE 0, Silent Hill 2, etc.

And SNES remakes! Wow! I love it. Most of those cartridges are hard to find, let alone portable in a nomad-like version of the SNES which doesn't exist. On the other ha

"Game & Watch Gallery series brings their 1980s Game & Watch devices to the GameBoy and then GameBoy Color and then GameBoy Advance."

Ignoring all the information and history put into the carts as well as the modern touch-ups (something Squaresoft only recently figured out how to do), consider all the gamers that never lived in the 1980's, let alone heard of the phrase "Game & Watch."

The keychains you mention weren't produced by Nintendo. The manufacturer licensed the games and the Game Boy Pocket image.

"E-Reader cards with rehashed NES games."

Little more than a perk on top of the device's main focus on more innovative uses, such as Pokemon-e, Animal Crossing-e and Mario Party-e. Note the way NOA waited until they were able to get the link cable to work with the e-Reader before releasing it, a feature none of the NES re-releases make use of.

And how much income can they be making when the games are only $5.00 a pop?

"SNES games reworked for the GBA, including a remake of SNES Zelda."

Games that have been out of publication for a decade or so. The Zelda franchise is 17 years old and A Link to the Past itself is 12.

"Port of Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time as a bonus for GameCube Zelda preorders"

A freebie gimmick originally intended to boost pre-sales of Wind Waker, now used as a freebie gimmick to sell consoles and Nintendo Power subscriptions. It's difficult to say that Nintendo is making any money on this game directly.

"Remake of Resident Evil for GameCube using all new graphics and some new features."

Something to go along with Resident Evil 0 without requiring gamers to go out and buy a competing console. At any rate, you seem to beconfusing Nintendo with Capcom. They're not the same thing, despite recent "megaton" rumors.
      • You seem to take my post in general as negative about Nintendo's recycing of games. I believe you've misread my tone and my criticism of the lackluster quality of some games (NES ports and RE2 & RE3 ports) as a commentary on Nintendo's actions. Here's a clarification: I don't give a damn what Nintendo does with their older games, and in the case of SNES remakes, I'm in favor of them. In fact...get this...I bought like six or seven of the freaking keychains. How about that, huh?

        • Remember, the games don't get published on Nintendo's console unless Nintendo (a) likes the cut of money they get and (b) agrees that the game can be published. When Nintendo insists on holding the keys to their platform so tightly, it opens them up to criticism when the software is crappy.

The same can be said of Sony and Microsoft. You don't publish for the PS2 or XBox without licensing from them. So are you doing your duty and criticizing MS for Kabuki Warriors?

    • Here's a news flash, Nintendo is in buisness to _make_money_.

Another news flash, Nintendo is not making gamers go buy game remakes by gun point.

If Nintendo is making lots of remakes, it's because they've found that the players want to buy remakes. Those people who choose to go out and buy remakes are presumably happy with them. And note that Nintendo is not alone in this trend, the PS2 has seen a whole slew of Square remakes.

This is great news! It'll be great to see if the Cube can truly compete with the PS2. However...

The original Metal Gear Solid on PlayStation, for all its (now) primitivity, has a certain beauty of its own. Back then, we truly appreciated the things it held -- The beauty of the snow, the motion blur, the impressive power of Rex. In its primitive (again, compared to now) graphics lie a certain beauty, and I hope the new game doesn't have a sterile feel like some rehashes do. Do not simply make the game with new graphics - Make the graphics fit the game and be a logical offshoot from the old, don't go changing things. I still want the HIND fight to be immersive, I still want the Comm Tower to take place at that central angle, and I still want the same basic feel to everything.

I hope it will be worthy of the name.

According to the article the port will be done by developer Silicon Knights. Their first project was the excellent 'Eternal Darkness', a third person adventure/horror game. That game felt anything but sterile. I never played any of the Metal Gear Solid games, lacking the required consoles (or computers), but as far as I know they were cinematic third person adventures. One of the most impressive facts about Eternal Darkness was the movie like camera. I don't doubt that, with their expertise, the GameCube ve
      • Eternal Darkness is excellent. I recently picked it up second hand, and I am more an action gamer than an adventure gamer. It kept me up for three nights straight. The difficulty curve was perfect, the gameplay/puzzles excellent, but what I really loved were the so-called "sanity effects". Man, the first time the game started playing tricks on me I almost had kittens. It was about 3 in the moring, me a little stoned, the place dead quiet, and all of a sudden the green volume bar on my TV started moving
      • Yeah, when I posted I didn't realize Silicon Knights was doing it. While I never played Eternal Darkness, I did play Legacy of Kain, which oozes polish and atmosphere more than any other game like it.

I wonder if this is a trend? The old houses outsourcing their biggest franchises to smaller, more focused developers? Jedi Knight 2 went from Lucas to Raven; Quake 4 went from id to Raven (I think?); MGS Cube went from Konami to Silicon Knights...

    • Or, as the MSX version so nicely put it, "destoroy(sic) the ultimate weapon Metal Gear" ;-) All the while smoking cigals(sic), of course ;-)

I loved what the MSX did with the screen when the truck moved. Moving entire screen bitmaps around was well beyond its feeble hardware, but its video display processor could compensate for badly aligned televisions by moving the image horizontally or vertically. That capability was exploited to shake the screen while the truck was moving.

Excellent excellent. Hopefully this was in some way inspired by my own drive to get MGS remade for the PS2 (didn't see the petition? Oh well, like those things work anyways). But is just confirmation, this was talked about several months ago. I defy anyone to name me one game that had a deeper plot and characterization than Metal Gear Solid. And if anyone says Final Fantasy VII or Zelda: Ocarina of Time so help me I'll leap across the Internet and strangle you.

Seriously, MGS was such a good example of how games can be more cinematic and still be good games. The story was interesting and ever-changing, the characters were well developed and beautifully executed, the script and translation was good, and the voice acting was beyond anything ever seen in a game prior (many props to Mr. David Hayter). I honestly believe that Metal Gear Solid is the single greatest console game of all time (on the level of story and characterization).

Schweet. I don't care if there are any extras, although they would be nice. Just more sneaking, more cardboard boxes and more good Snake-isms.

      Star Control II [sourceforge.net]
    • I won't mention Final Fantasy VII but I will mention Final Fantasy IV and VI (or II and III as they were known over here) for the SNES, as well as Final Fantasy Tactics for the PSX. The things these have in common though (besides being Square games) is that they're all roleplaying games, whereas MGS is a good mix of drama and action. They even tied the old Metal Gears into the plot, and there was plenty of humor only players of the original NES games could completely appreciate.
      • Final Fantasy IV comes close (in my book of Best Console Games it's MGS, FFIV, LTTP). And ChronoTrigger was another great game that had lots of things going for it (that shockingly, was a good game Square made). So yeah, and stuff.
