Evolution 2K3 - Huge US Fighting Game Tournament 15

Namflow writes "Shoryuken.com just announced Evolution 2K3. Evolution is the biggest annual fighting game tournament in North America. This year is especially exciting because not only will there be the normal Capcom 2D fighters, but a host of 3D games such as Virtua Fighter 4: Evolution. Time to start saving..." Even Tekken 4 and Soul Calibur 2 are included this year, as well as traditional classics like Super Street Fighter II Turbo and the newest 2D of Capcom Vs SNK 2, for this big showdown from August 8th-10th in Pomona, California.

It's about time someone had a fighting game tournament. I don't know if this is an annual thing that I've never heard about or what, but there have been FPS tournaments since they first came out.

Anybody remember the 80's movie The Wizard about a video game tournament where they unveiled Super Mario Bros. 3 at the end?

This isn't the first Evolution tourniment. Fighting game tourniments have been going on for a while.
    • Shoryuken.com has had major tournaments for at LEAST the past 5 years. I still have memories of B5 (their pre-Evolution tournament, which was held in 2001.) Not to mention there's the ECC for the east coast (ECC = east coast championships), midwest tournies and much more. They just aren't on such a grand scale as Evolution. Evolution is bigger than ever this year becuase they've gone past the scope of the "usual suspects" -- these being CvS2, MvC2, ST and 3S. Now they're covering the whole gamut of rec

8 on the break in dunellen NJ has been running the East Coast Street Fighter Championship for at least 8 years now. People from all over the country (yes, even from CA) used to fly in for it.

I don't play fighting games anymore, but I used to play at the break's weekly tournaments and I played in the first ECC for Tekken 2 (a long time ago!). Out of everywhere I've played both on and offline 8 on the break back then always had the best comp and probably still does now.

A well run tournament can be a great thing, but a poorly run one can cause confusion and frustration.

While I'm sure they're professional enough to run a tournament well, here's my experience with game tournaments.

Once I showed up for a tournament, and realized after a few hours that I was supposed to lug my PC with me if I wanted to play! Nevermind the 20 unused computers sitting there. My mistake was thinking they would force others to share for those who didn't feel like dragging their computer from their apartment to the game hall, but I went home unhappy.

I went back to the rules page, and while in the fine print it did say you needed a computer to play, it allowed you to sign up and click the box that said you weren't bringing a computer, which obviously wasn't good news.

The best tournament I went to was well run. Only competitors were allowed in the game area, and the PCs were supplied by the group hosting the tourament. Unfortunatly, I had expected all such events to be well organized...

You can also look at Twin Galaxies [twingalaxies.com]

They are also planning various World Championships [twingalaxies.com] the weekend of July 11th. at the Mall of America.

I guess the impromtu tournaments on the weekends will have to do until we get cool enough to have one.

Interesting, I attended Cal Poly Pomona, CA (class of 2000). The Student Union game area is not very big. Not sure they can hold the "biggest fighting game competition in the US" in that dingy space. Well, I guess they'll have to use some classrooms and cafeteria.

I haven't gone back there since I graduated. Maybe I
