Red Vs. Blue - A Halo Fan Flick 109

Universal Nerd writes "Red vs. Blue are the folks with a great sense of humor who gave us the Apple Switch spoof, Mac Gamer, a while ago. They're now releasing a new movie called The Blood Gulch Chronicles, a series of episodes created using in-game footage from Halo. Well worth a look and a laugh." The fifth and latest episode came out yesterday, and this is some of the best and funniest machinima I've seen in a long time. Update: 05/05 19:43 GMT by S : Here's a BitTorrent link, thanks to Gametab.

We @ Slashdot Games are now trying to make sure there's a BitTorrent link available alongside any posts that will generate server-slaying bandwidth, with the help of nice people who mailed us and offered to help out. In this case, we actually mailed the guys at Gametab before the post went live to alert them ask them about putting a BitTorrent link [gametab.com] on their site - thanks again to them. Looks like it helped a bit, at least.

  • They could have uploaded it into Freenet and then posted a link to it there. You can link to all sorts of content that way - and the /. effect is reversed: The more hits it gets, the more available it becomes.
    • Bit Torrent is also similar to the reverse to the slashdot effect...assuming that people keep their dl windows open for a while. As more and more people download it, more and more possible hosts become available to help serve up those files.
      • But when happens when the site that is serving the .torrent files gets Slashdotted?

I propose creating a new system called "Torrent^2" that distribute the load of transferring .torrent files.

But what about the load of transferring .torrent2 files you ask? Well, "Torrent^3" is in the works.

I don't play games really. I own a console but it is a Sega Genesis. I haven't pulled it out from under the t.v. in a long time.

All that to say I have really been enjoying this series. Thank god I got episode 5 before this got posted on /. The humor makes it fun for anybody. No need to be in on HALO or any of that.

This is even better than the Matrix (Halo Remix).

Aside from all the comments regarding /. effect and bandwidth, does any one know how they managed to do this? Did the guys just capture it off their TV and then added voice overs?

It's an interesting concept, and I'm sure some bright spark can actually make a basic TV series outta say, GTA 3 and The Hitman.

I've been following this since Episode 1, and it gets funnier with each iteration, as the series builds up - I only wish them epsiodes were longer.. :)

sort of, yeah. I know there are a few effects they added by using a video-editing program, which adds a nice touch. This really isn't an uncommon thing... there are certain people on the web who have a FETISH with making Halo videos (heh). These are very high quality and very entertaining, though. ;)

    • G4TV, the video game channel (on cable/satelite) actually does run a weekly series made almost entirely in games. It's called Portal, and is 'filmed' in a number of the MMORPG's out there like Everquest and Dark Age of Camelot. Pretty funny stuff, but some MMORPG experience may be needed to appreciate.

I keep getting "bad data from tracker" unless I take privoxy out of the loop.

  • My files, as obtained via the bittorrent link all freeze about 5-10 seconds in. Anyone know if those files are corrupt, or some patch for Divx I need? Running W2k, and as far as I know Divx3.11 with 5.02 on top of that.
  • I discovered this yesterday, so I evaded the /. effect by a good 24 hours, and thus have all the episodes. It's extremely witty stuff, basically, why are there people sitting in a gulch fighting each other? What if they were just grunts who didn't care about fighting the other team? What if they were simply involved in a long stalemate rather than a no-holds-barred war? It really makes me think about those long hours I spent playing Halo multiplayer. Sort of.

    • I have personally talked to a devloper, Roger Wolfson, for Microsoft that is working on the port of Halo to the PC. He said that even though the XBox and PC are very similar, it is still a big pain, since they have convert some ASSEMBLY for the VIDEO CARD into directx stuff, and make it more generic. There is also the problem that some of the stuff the XBox does in the video card is impossible/proprietary in the current video cards for the PC.

So, yes halo is definilty coming to PC, but it will probably ta

        • This thing was ported to X-Box not the other way around. Remember?

I'm guessing that Bungie added some new visual effects between being bought by Microsoft and finishing the Xbox version, and the changes have to propagate throughout the OpenGL and DirectX branches of the graphics engine.

          • Given what the parent said, it appears most of their time will be spent removing OpenGL functionality and patching any missing parts with DirectX.
      • This seems like a stalling tactic so that Halo 2 has a chance of being released on Xbox BEFORE Halo 1 is released on PC.

If they were planning to port to PC all along (which they said they were)... then only a mental midget would have not bothered to use DirectX etc... Especially since the Xbox uses directx anyways.

  • Why not make an SHA1 hash and stick that in the slashdot article? All you need is urn:sha1:HASH , and all us p2p-ers would be happy.

It would only take a few seconds to compute it, and you don't have to have a FILE, just a one-line string (possibly hidden in a link).

  • Is it just me or do these files seem unnecessarily large?

I routinely download excellent looking 43 minute episodes of Enterprise off of Kazaa that are only roughly 82 megs each in DivX format. That's less than 2 megs a minute, while these Red vs Blue files are 5 times larger at 10 megs/min. Also there's not that much movement going on, so that should even further the compression abilities.

What settings were for these DivX files?

  • The rule of thumb for using BitTorrent to server your files is that you only start seeing a benefit to using BitTorrent when the files are at least 50MB in size. The people putting out these files should have zipped all of the episodes into one large Torrent.
