Super Mario's Wacky Worlds? 20

Thanks to InsertCredit for pointing out a new article on The Black Moon Project regarding the lost Philips CD-I game, Super Mario's Wacky Worlds. This appears to have been in development by Novalogic (better known for the Comanche helicopter sims at the time) in 1992 and 1993. The article has info and screenshots from the partially finished prototype, which was intended to be an adaptation of Super Mario World for the CD-I with new levels and gameplay. What a genuinely odd find.

Super Mario's Wacky Worlds?

  • I wouldda played it. I like the Mario games a lot. Games have become really violent (GTA, Max Payne, etc) in recent years. I like games where the majority of the effort into producing the game went into making a fun-to-play game, rather than producing a cool-looking game. The early mario games are really easy, but I like them anyway. And I really like seing them ported to the GBA... giving games like Yoshi's Island a second chance. I guess the next Super Mario Advance could be something new... if so,

"Fun to play" and "cool looking/violent" aren't mutually exclusive by any means. The two games you mentioned are fantastically fun, GTA especially. Just because GTA is violent doesn't mean as much time didn't go in to making it "fun to play" as say, Super Mario Sunshine.

There are plenty of non-violent games that aren't any fun, and plenty of cool looking/violent games that are amazingly fun. One has nothing to do with the other.

    • Jumping on a turtle's head isn't violent ?
I don't think WWF would agree.
    • I rented Ratchet and Clank [ratchetand...adgets.com] recently, and it was a blast. Nothing has come as close to the classic platformers as this has for me. I was playing as often as I could, looking for secret crap (everyone remember Minus World in Super Mario Bros. [gamefaqs.com]?), collecting bolts because I wanted to not because I needed them to advance (though you need them--to advance). I hear there's a sequel [gamespot.com] in the works too.
  • Those screenshots of egypt (desert stereotype there) and the pirate ship look REALLY REALLY familiar? can anyone think of some platform games with similar backdrops? (VERY similar ones)

Or am I making up memories now

Hey, what ever happened to Super Gates' Wacky Windows? ....No, wait, I'm running it now....
  • I'm still waiting for a full on CDI emulator so I can play Link: Faces of Evil..
  • I wonder if it's going to use their patented Voxel technology [cdmag.com].
  • This article does little good without an ISO image to download so we can play it.
