The First Virtual Bond Girl? 65

Thanks to an anonymous reader for pointing out this press release from Yahoo via Businesswire, stating that actress Shannon Elizabeth will star as "the first original interactive Bond girl to be cast, Serena St. Germaine", in EA's forthcoming James Bond 007:Everything or Nothing game. Now actors are being signed specifically for games (Jean Reno for Onimusha 3, even Bruce Willis for Apocalypse a couple of years back), where will it all end? And what actor/game combination are you secretly yearning for?

  • I'm anxious to see a gang fight simulator with all the big names - 2Pac, Snoop Dogg, and Notorious B.I.G.
    • Better yet, how about an RTS where you can control the east coast, west coast or Detroit rappers? The primary activity would be attempting to gain control of key radio stations in order to spread your particular sound. One group could specialize in street fighting, another could have litigation units and a third could have wicked PR flacks. The latter two could handle actual fighting by hiring bodyguards or having solid police relations. I'd buy that for the dollar.
    • I hope The Hawkman [mchawking.com] is in there somewhere (even as an easter egg...).

    • Well, it doesn't have 2Pac, Snoop or Biggie, but Def Jam Vendetta [ign.com] has other big names from the Def Jam lineup.

Or what about Wu-Tang Shaolin Style [ign.com]. Not specific to gang wars, but it does have Wu-Tang members fighting each other. Also, Method Man wields a big fucking hammer in this game. Crappy fighting game, but loads of fun on drunken nights.

I thought this meant that in the next Bond movie, the girl would be CG. That would definitely be worth mentioning, as opposed to the actual subject, of which, I don't really care.
    • In order to keep up with the times, they'd have to employ the technology used in the new matrix flick, and creat a scene where JB saves the world by shagging a whole load of cloned evil hotties piled 10 deep on top of him.

  • Uhhh, please don't use Shannon Elizabeth's name in the same sentence you use the word Bond. It creates a mental image that incapacitates me from any productive mental thoughts. Sorry, for the next half hour all I'm going to be able to ponder is Shannon Elizabeth and Bondage... :-)

They are nice thoughts, but I've really got work I need to get done.... (So why the heck am I reading slashdot...).

This time, you aren't fighting to escape a dungeon, you're trying to get to the boss who killed your friend, kidnapped your daughter, polluted your lands (and killed another one of your friends), and finally, kept you in a POW cell for a long long time.

Featuring over 10 seconds of voiceovers!

Fight your way thorough endless enemies, while you never actually die.

Featuring red, green, yellow and blue colors (and the one warrior class)

  • I've been rather unimpressed with any kind of acting in games. Remember James Earl Jones in Command & Conquer? It was embarassing to watch. Then again, the C&C cut-scenes are in need of competent writers. Go pick up an old copy of Dune 2000 and you can see just how lame the Dune story can be.

But there's a difference between selling your likeness and maybe a little voice work as opposed to actually acting in a video game. I don't think any actors take that medium very seriously. And the ones
    • Neither would looking at a lo-poly model of a beautiful actress.

So a hi-poly model of a beautiful actress WOULD get you to buy a game? Please don't spread that around too much - graphical capability already has too much power in the gaming market.

    • As a point of information, you don't play as Neo or Trinity of Morpheus in the Matrix Game.

You play Niobe or Ghost, two minor charecters with a decent backstory(at least according to some reviews).

You are right about the movie/tv industry not respecting gaming as a medium.
  • DOA Beach Volleyball 2 has ALL sorts or possiblities for me.
  • but I'm waiting for Jenna Jameson for action!
  • I want a talk show simulator starring Conan O'Brien.

Seriously tho, the only time I thought a celeb would help a game is in the case of iconic characters. I always wished the old Indiana Jones adventure games had Harrison Ford doing the voice-over.
    • While I was disapointed about that as well, the actor who they've used for the past few games is pretty darn good. While his voice isn't the same as Harrison Ford's, they put a lot of the wryness and vocal inflections that Mr Ford had.

Vice City had a number of known actors doing voice work. Ray Liotta, Tom Sizemore, Dennis Hopper, Burt Reynolds, Gary Busey, Lee Majors, Fairuza Balk and others. I was really suprised when they didn't promote any of the celebrity voice actors.

And as far as voice actors go, David Hayter smokes everyone away. Let's just hope that his success at being a writer (X-Men, X2, Hulk) doesn't mean he won't voice everyone's favorite neck-snapping badass.
    • Actually I think it's a good thing that the actors weren't more heavily promoted/featured in GTA:VC. Rather than think, "That's Tom Sizemore", you just get great character. Maybe by not making the stars a big part of the package, it loosened them up enough to just do a quality job on the voices...
  • I personally don't agree with the direction that developers are taking by incorporating real life personalities with interactive media. It creates another reason for design to be lacking with the typical EA/Marketing "don't worry, the name will sell" excuse. This trend will surely catch on, and in two-to-five years leave us with a majority of titles that have no real content, but scantily clad star personalities infesting all the potentially good titles.
