Quake 4 Renders and Concept Art 58

p0z3r writes "Following a recent story about Endorphin (from a previous Slashdot post), I came across the newly released Quake 4 renders. Hope you like them!" They're still lacking in the color department, but man oh man are they full of detail. I'm betting Quake 4 requires me to upgrade my hardware again, but I'm inclined to say it's worth it for graphics like these. Update: 07/19 17:54 GMT by S : It seems the images have now been removed from the Quake3World site.

Edit: Oh yeah a realistic gib system would be awesome, at least for lan play. I know it would require a lot of internet power, but just think where we'll be in 2006, I bet everyone has at least 5MBps.

Ya, just 15 months and they will upgrade my dsl to 5MBps, the RIAA would love that. After the RIAA gets done sueing the entire USA, nobody will be able to play quake4, doing 5-10 years in federal prison, and the 250,000 dollar fine. God bless corporate America, prisoner #1295736325.

This is a very clever ploy on Carmack's part to get into space:

    1) Design games that force players to buy new hardware.
    2) Collect kickbacks from nVidia, ATI, Intel, AMD.
    3) Profit!
    4) Build spacecraft with profit.
    5) Go into space.
    6) Profit!

Seriously--Quake4 is gonna be like Quake3. I mean, why would they release two single-player games, so close to eachother? Specially when D3 is gonna 0wnz j00--and just about everything else.

      'cept HL2.

One thing to remember is that the models used for the current renders may not be what's released in the game. They may be using million polygon models, and cut it back to a "more reasonable" ten thousand for actual gameplay.

Looking at the concept art, a few ideas for Q4 can be found in the notes. Apparently humans are going to be used as power cells (one [freeserve.co.uk] and two [freeserve.co.uk]). Humans may be upgraded [freeserve.co.uk] into Strogg troops, power cells, or other pieces of Strogg technology [freeserve.co.uk]. Then again, things could very well change by the time the game is released.

I'm starting to wonder if Q4 is going to be a "retelling" of Q2, rather than a sequel.

The amount of detail is moot with the models we see now. When the models are converted over to the Doom 3 engine format, the level of detail is maintained in the form of height maps. In the first E3 movie one of the artists mentions it specificly calling it the "John Carmack Magic". Y
    • Straying a bit off of the main topic, does anyone happen to know if the concept art for a game is sold once production is ended? These would make for rather nice dorm adornments...

Are these actual models going to be used in the game? They look more like something that would be used in a cut scene or intro. If it's going to be used in the game, then that's VERY nice!

These are the extremely high-polygon count models from which the final models + bump maps will be computed. The in-game models will have far fewer polygons, but automatically-computed bump maps that simulate the higher-count renders.

Take a look at Polybump [polybump.com] for an example of this technology.

Well, they took the grabs down berfore I could see them so I can't really comment. I bet that the game will look pretty darn close. If they're not using the Polybump technique mentioned by another poster, then at the very least they can 'bake' deatails into the texture maps. You can do lotsa stuff with textures when

I wonder how all these renders will fit into the story of the game. Is quake 4 supposed to be a single player experience or multi?

Quake 4 is based on Doom iii's engine. Doom III supposedly focuses primarily on singleplayer with very limited mp support (4 players max or something is the figure I read in an interview).

Of course, they could release a Doom II mp add-on which ends up being incorporated in the Quake 4 base game.

Who'll be the first devteam to release a *game* based on Q4? :P

/me is still shocked at the thought that some people call Quake 3 a game... Nice engine though
    • Doom 3 is the engine for Quake 4, which is being developed by Raven Software (http://www.ravensoft.com/), creators of Jedi Knight 2.

Besides, Quake 3 is fun. It may not have been innovative or amazingly polished, but it is a good game.

Yeah, well, people used to call things like "street fighter 2" and "mario brothers" games. Just because it doesn't tell a story doesn't mean it's not a game!

Doom 3 isn't even finished yet. Are they already working on the next game? Are both gaming lines (Quake and Doom) going to extend into the future?

In other news, John Ashcroft declared that linking to this site is illegal and will get you a trip to lovely Cuba!

Quake 4 is a project by Raven? i think.. are they using the Doom 3 engine? not sure.. Anyway, it's supposed to be the sequel to Quake 2 .. I think they should change names, though..

Quake 2 wasn't really a sequel to Quake 1.. and Quake 3 wasn't really a sequel to it.. they all had entirely different stories and stuff...

These renderings are based on fan work. I doubt these are in any way official. The first guy is actually a Q3A skin. See:

    www.planetquake.com/polycount/downloads/index.as p? model=910

Btw, Quake is the game that the top 1v1 FPS players use to go head to head. Quake III Arena is simply the most immersive FPS game so far ever made. Other games do the team, graphics and story thing. Quake does the balls on head to head thing.

    Carmack's rulez.
    • The concept art certainly looked real to me. I think it was definitely legit, else why pull it? Almost wish I hadn't looked at it now, spoilt the surprise :D

The human processing plant as seen previously in Q2 looked especially gruesome.

One thing that was really interesting were the pictures of vehicles as some of the concepts. I assume there will be some sort of driving element in Q4 - whether on-rails or freeform remains to be seen.
    • that's the fake quake 4 model that was around a while back, and its based on the official concept art for quake 4 that was released in 2001
