No KOTOR For PS2, Darth Vader Playable? 65

Thanks to IGN PS2 for their second Playstation 2 rumor round-up, including plenty of questionable whisperings (GTA4 is referenced as possibly being called 'Sin City', though this was a notable April Fool's gag), but at least one official confirmation, from Lucasarts, following some online confusion, that "There are no plans for to develop Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic for the PS2. We are concentrating fully on the development of the PC version of the game." The rest of the rumor-mongering has at least one intriguing tip, the claim that LucasArts are developing "a third-person perspective action-adventure game [which] enables players to take on the role of Darth Vader."

        So let me get this straight, you were willing to buy it for ps2, but for PC you would d pirate it? Does that make sense to anyone else?
        • Makes sense to me. PC versions of console games always seem to be...lousy. I would certainly try a dloaded copy out for playability before spending $50 for the PC version. However, I have more faith in console versions being easily playable. Not to mention they're easier to sell off if I don't like it.

    Who thinks that basically all the Star Wars Games/Movies are on the downfall? I mean I tried this game at a friends house and it's not amazing. Grated I think it's better than alot of the junk I have tried on the X-Box but according the me, the last good game/movie involved with the Star Wars franchise was Tie Fighter, which was what? 1996? *drool*... God I loved that game. The feeling of being so puny when you used the regular Tie... and then the power of the Tie Advanced. I think I just soiled myself... oops Anyhoo... whatever.
    • You probably haven't played KOTOR enough then. I played X-Wing and Tie Fighter and, yes, Rebel Assault back in the day and KOTOR is right up there with them in terms of recreating the Star Wars experience. You're also neglecting to mention Raven's Jedi Knight work. It's not groundbreaking but is definitely solid as far as FPS's go. And Level 5's work on Rogue Squadron/leader far outshines the Force Commanders of the Star Wars bunch. The Lucasarts Indiana Jones adventure games I played as a kid were so
    • KOTOR is pretty amazing. I've never played "RPG" games before and at first the turn-based idea of "rolling" to determine attacks and stuff was a bit odd, but about 1/3 through the game I was kicking ass AND taking names.

      KOTOR is, like many reviewers have said, is probably the best use of the Star Wars license in the last 5 years (Phantom Menace and ATOC included)

      Pff, I've spent the last week playing the SNES I just got, and among the only games I've managed to borrow are the three Star Wars games - play those and then play KOTOR, and the difference is staggering.

      As for the Tie Fighter/Rogue Squadron/etc. games, I find them too repetetive generaly - well done, but really, another space dogfighting game? For that matter, another Star Wars space dogfighting game? I had my fill with Wing Commander III, which at least had something resembling a unique plotline to go wi
    • What about Rogue Leader for the GameCube? It is still one of the best looking Cube games, is very very fun and challenging, and captures the hectic SW battle in a great way. When you play the Endor battle stage, and you see dozens of TIEs while your frigates are trying to turn to escape, and you hear Lando say that you have to take on the Star Destroyers. Anyone that has ever played that part knows that that is was SW is all about.
    • No you're certainly not alone in that sentiment. Along with Star Trek, SW manages to underlie many crap games and a few really good ones. You're probably better off looking at the developer to set your expectation for any upcoming game. I also agree with the other person who said KOTOR takes some time before it acquires that Star Wars feel.

    This game is something that the PS2 would not be able to run unless it was cut down so far as to make the game useless. Save files for it are 64megs in save, for crynig out loud! You're as likely to see Morrowind on the PS2 as KOTOR.

    If you've played the game, you know the enormous amount of detail that was put into it. They'de have to take out all bump mapping, shrink the levels, remove most of the NPCs, etc, etc. The PS2 just doesn't have the graphics power and RAM to execute this game. Plus, there's no way for Bioware to release updates to the game on the PS2; even if they figured out how to release updates via Sony's network adaptor (without any of the Live! infrastructure), where'd you put it? Assuming you could do a 4/1 compression on the save file, you'd still take 2 full memory cards with each KOTOR save.

    I think you should play this game, as it is excellent. Wether you do so on your PC or you Xbox is up to you. If you don't have either, consider getting one; the more systems you own, the more games you can play, the less likely you'll ever miss out on anything cool.

      You mean all 8 of them? Ok, so I'm exaggerating a bit, but there are maybe 3 models for each gender and race of NPC. That sounds like a lot, but really, every fourth person has the SAME FACE!

      That said, it's really quite a nice game =)

        Yeah, that lack of NPC models affects all Bioware games though. I guess it's just not worth developing them!

        Although Neverwinter Nights has a rather startlingly large number of them, they still get repeated, and so do the character portraits. They really should make a game where it's impossible to select one of the NPC character portraits as your own.

        Beginning to get rather annoyed with people getting upset about now PS2 ports for things. Wake up and smell the coffee - it's outdated hardware! Someone get

      While in general I agree with you regarding the PS2 being underpowered, I'm going to play devil's advocate here.

      1. Save-games: A 64-meg save file is just lazy engineering as far as I'm concerned. Games just as complex have fit their save-games into 500k.
      2. Take out bump-mapping: True enough. I guess you could do this if y
      • I'm not talking updates to fix bugs, I'm talking updates to add more FUN. New armours, weapons, starting character classes, etc. Updates are the reason there won't have to be a Mech Assault 2; Microsoft will stream out updates as they see fit to increase the game's fun factor.

        And, even if you don't agree with the idea of patches, patches do help. Any multiplayer online game for console should have some way to update it so that hacks or bugs don't become exploited and ruin the game.

    • Just to clarify, the saves are NOT 64 megs a pop. Each save game is about 1,500 "blocks." Since the Xbox memory card is 8 MB and about 500 blocks (I only have one because it came with my Live! beta), that means that the saves are 24 MB a piece. They could EASILY be optimized to be much smaller (they could probably get down to at least 1 MB and maybe even smaller) if Bioware felt the need.

      • That of the 50 million PS2s out there, no large percentage will ever have HDs. Unless it comes stock with the system, no one will buy it. The only peripherals that every got more than 20% market saturation are memory cards and controllers with rumble.

          • The vast majority of people with stock PS2s won't upgrade with an HD, the same way they won't upgrade with a network adaptor. There are 50 million PS2s out there, and about 500,000 network adaptors. That's a 100 to 1 ratio. Do you know how many Xbox users have network adaptors in their console? all 10 million of them. That's also why Xbox system link thrives, while Sony is pulling the i.Link port in their next design revision.

              • I know what i.Link is, and I know why Sony would be sued for using the term Firewire. Go look at a real PS2 system link cable [lik-sang.com]. Note how its connector is the 4-pin i.Link cable connector!

                They are phasing it out because the system link games (Armored Core series, Grant Turismo 3) were so few in number. The cable is impossible to find at retail (you have to go online for it), as is the software available (2 games, woo).     • Vice City was GTA 3.5, or something like that.

      They kept repeating that Vice City would not be GTA 4, yet people keep making that mistake since they didn't call it something like GTA3-2:Vice City. The game evolved from GTA3, but it wasn't THAT much of a change in terms of the game engine.

    I hadn't heard any rumors it was being released for anything other than the Xbox and PC for...awhile. Several months at least. Probably just wishful thinking on the part of PS2 owners.

    Me, I'm not even buying it for PC. I have enough RPGs I haven't finished, and I haven't seen any reason why I need to add this to the stack. I've heard nothing but good about it, but it just doesn't matter.

    I'm just not seeing it. Somehow the image of Darth Vader in a third-person perspective doing bunny hops, clinging to railing edges and running doesn't seem right.

    The cool thing about Vader is the fact that he's so bad-ass he doesn't do those type of things. He's all about choking people from afar using his fingers and lightsabers. He's about presence and fear. He's management. Vader let's his minions do the piddly stuff and steps in to finish it off. This game design really, really worries me.

    • What DOES he do, anyway? All he does is give orders, then sit there and wait a bit. Maybe you'll get to see his filing-paperwork side, or you could meditate...

      Actually, maybe we'll see his "younger" side? Remember Anakin Skywalker? That d00d was pretty l33t =)

      After reading some of the comments to my original post, I can see that I'm right on this. I mean, what is the marketing department going to do to hype up the game?

    • By the time of "Episode 4," I certainly agree with you. However, it has been told that Vader was responsible for hunting down and eliminating the Jedi Knights. That probably took a bit more work than just walking into rooms and choking them...if it didn't, then that big Jedi battle in AotC would have been over a lot sooner. Since the last movie isn't likely to address killing all the Jedi Knights, that could indeed be a worthy subject for a video game, filling in events between episodes 3 and 4.
    • ahh... darth has become so parodied over the years i think we can live with a little more. many star wars fans can live with all the parallel universes where characters exist while being selective with the images they 'burn' into their mind, so as much as i respect the dude, i want to take him to a whole new level. this game can basically go the direction of duke nukem i feel, to move around this huge black object on screen is a thing to marvel

    Shortly after the release of Vice City, Rockstar announced that the next version of GTA would be called Sin City. Then, months later, someone played an unfunny April Fools joke that said the same thing. Unfortunately, ever since that damned April Fools joke, a Google search only turns up the April Fools info, and it's impossibly frustrating to find any reference to the original statement. And every time someone ignorantly claims that Sin City was just an April Fools joke, it makes it even harder.
