Max Payne 2 Previewed 31

The first previews of Max Payne 2 have hit the web. GameSpot has their first look up. Additionally, the good folks over at GameSpy have their take on it up as well. The folks at Remedy and Rockstar describe the sequel as a "film noir love story," and as previously mentioned, Max will have a love interest this time around.

  • Another action movie/game ruined by a love story. who cares?
    • If a love story is properly done, it can add a lot to a game. See Cowboy Bebop for a story about love that's making it hackneyed, trite, or crappy. It's understated, wonderful, and probably one of the more enjoyable experiences in a game.

Of course, it won't be to my liking unless the lover in question dies. But I'm a sucker for the angst and the drama and such.

See Cowboy Bebop for a story that has love in it, as well as guns and crazy ultraviolence without making it hackneyed, trite, or crappy. • They ruined Max's Face. Noooooooo!

As long as the folks who made Kung-Fu mod can still work their magic, I'm in.
    • He needs more stubble... All NY cops that are "world weary" need stubble.

The man who was the model for Max's face in the first game was Remedy programmer Sam Lake. Apparently they felt that they'd rather have him working fully on the game instead of flying him to NY for a day or two for head scans and pictures. I'm quite bummed at the fact that Max's face has changed, but I guess there's nothing we can do at this point.

The GOOD news is that the voice actor (which was not Mr. Lake in the first game) will remain the same. So at least it'll sound like good ol' Max...
      • I for one am glad he's finally gonna lose that constipated look.

I couldn't watch the cut scenes without thinking "go take a dump, there's plenty of levels with toilets in them".
    • Are you kidding me? It's a miracle! Max has finally found new Metamucil, to keep him regular. That scrunchy face from the first always made it look like Max had 1 too many burritos for lunch.

Having read both previews, based on whats stated it seems implied that Max Payne will turn to the "dark side" in the sequel.

Over the course of the game's story, it will be revealed that Max will get framed once again, but he'll react much differently, considering that he's both tired of fighting the system, as well as his own loneliness.

This time he'll actually confess to doing the deed, in what we can only assume is part of one of those much deeper plot twists.

I liked the first game, its one of the few games that was hyped more than the second coming of Jesus, and still delivered a solid and most of all enjoyable game. For this reason, I am looking forward to the sequel.

Perfect? no, of course not. But it was fun. It's one of the only 3rd person shooters that I have played that had solid controls and most of all, the aiming was good enough that you could actually hit your target. The Bullet time while definately a gimick, was a really good gimick. If you want to see just how good they implemented "bullet time" in Max Payne Play Dead To Rights sometime, and see how poorly Namco used it in their Max Payne Rip Off.
    • I agree. Their implementation of bullet time is the best one out there. It's way better than Dead to Rights and Enter the Matrix.
    • I just hope it's easier to control yourself during the "Walk on a trail of blood that's floating in outer space" acid trip segment in this one. Or better yet, I hope there is no "Walk on a trail of blood that's floating in outer space" acid trip segment at all in #2. Because other than that, Max Payne was pretty cool, despite the bland levels at the begining. I think I might track down a PC copy so I can try the kung fu version.
  • I am going to holdoff on getting all "giddy" over Max Payne 2. Please remember who is behind this whole thing: 3DRealms. When I actually can walk to the local best buy and see the game for sale, not pre order, I will be excited. We have had, over the past 5 years or so, a plethora or cool screenshots and wild game trailers from 3DRealms. Their other "oh my god", "I can't wait", "...going to revolutionize games", "WHEN ITS DONE" game is still being waited for.

  • The screen shots look good. I wonder if they are going to keep the bullet-time tricks in this one. In the first game it was innovative but to be honest I'm kind of tired of seeing it. Bringing a love interest into the mix isn't such a bad idea. Fans of noir know that you need a femme fatale to betray and save you. Does anyone else think the femme [gamespot.com] looks like Demi Moore [imdb.com] though?
  • It would be nice when this is done to work soley on making an easy to use editor to make your own max maps. The last game you could actually watch someone else play and the "theater experiance" would be better then alot of current movies out there ("The One" comes to mind). Voice acting would be difficult (maybe some voice filters to clean up amerature attempts?). But imagine downloading a map with a game lifetime of 2 hours, and a decent plot (tv episode quality). Max Payne's story ended. There is no room for a sequel. All they are doing anyway is recycling the few characters who survived. I really liked how Max Payne ended ambiguously. This new game destroys that. All they are doing is banking on the excelence of Max Payne. If I were them I would make a game of the same quality, but write a new story. They could even say "from the makers of Max Payne" on the box. Anything that doesn't ruin the ending of the original.
    • Thats why companies make prequels...
      • Interesting yet totally irrelevant point. Max Payne 2 is a sequel, RTFA before you try and offer a retort to my argument.

I believe his point was that many people would rather make prequels, thus leaving the ending to be just that.

I'm mixed on the idea. If they could pull it off, more power to them. But I'm sure they realize that if they fark this one over, it'll bring the franchise down with it.

  • Not much was mentioned in the article and reviews about gameplay. They predominantly focused on the storyline, although important, is not the priority of most gamers. They revolutionized gaming with bullet time. For Max Payne 2 to be truly successful, they have to do more than add a romance to the story line. They must progress the gameplay in a new area. Bullettime is now almost 4 years old, having been replicated in several games (sadly Enter the Matrix).
  • "film noir love story"

I bet it will be a piece of crap.
  • God do I hope that they do NOT bring back the "follow the trail of blood while you are knocked out dream." Drove me freaking nuts and was really not much fun. I did like, however, the scene where you had to break out with nothing but a baseball bat and almost no health. Still not holding my breath though.
  • Anyone else notice how much Max looks like the guy that had the lead in the Resident Evil movie? Every time he came on the screen, my friends and I yelled "Max Payne!"
