Sega's Classic Remakes Expanded, Shown 26

Thanks to The Magic Box for their new information on Sega's AGES 2500 Series remakes for PlayStation 2. We've covered the initial set of remakes, currently announced for Japanese release only, and including Phantasy Star, Fantasy Zone, Monaco GP, Space Harrier, and Golden Axe, but there's now a streaming trailer of the first titles (in 56k and broadband flavors), and details on the next games in the series: "Vol.6:Virtua Racing - remake of Model 1 3D racing game, Vol.7:Last Bronx - remake of the Model 2 arcade fighting game, Vol.8:Phantasy Star 2 - remake of Mega Drive RPG, Vol.9:Phantasy Star 4: The End of Millennium - remake of Mega Drive RPG."

  • Sonic the hedgehog? Anyone else sick of these crappy 3d versions they keep pumping out?

If Nintendo did something along the lines of the Sega Ages program and remade some of their classic NES games for the GC or its sucessor, it'd be a huge success - and since Nintendo's remakes sell very well, we know there's demand for something like this. Wonder if they've got anything like that in the works...

As for the Sega series...I'll be happy when they get to the Sonic games and "Altered Beast."

    • The Sonic Mega Collection (basically every Sonic game prior to Sonic Adventure) was released for the GameCube, and was never announced as an exclusive title, but I can't find any announcements that state it will be coming soon for XBox or PS2.

I would like to see older Nintendo titles, too, but for now I'm going with the GBA versions of the ones that are available and using the GB Player when I play at home. Of course, with a new console slated for some point in the next year and a half, I doubt they'll go

I have the Mega Collection, and I agree, it kicks ass, but it's missing Sonic CD, one of the best in the series.

Wasn't Sonic Adventure DX supposed to have like every Sonic Gamegear game hidden inside of it?

To some extent, they have some on the GBA, with the ecard reader.. it hasn't got very popular in the States though.. (at least with peers my age, so maybe it's different for kids)

They had some old NES games, like Tennis, Donkey Kong, Balloon Fight, Joust.. (which were arcade games anyhow)

And they're pretty cheap, at ~ 5$ a pack of cards, which is a game..

Random note: Sega is working on a new Altered Beast title, but it's not really a remake...more like a new 3D beat-em-up.
  • I am glad to see the Phantasy Star series being redone for PS2 but why leave out Phantasy Star III. I personally would love to have the entire series redone since I never owned a genesis and only ever played the games via renting the system. I'll assume its because the third installment wasn't as good as 2 or 4 or was a master system first like 1 was.

    • "Phantasy Star 3: Generations of Doom" was done by a different team than PS1, 2, and 4. Actually, PS4 was simply called "Phantasy Star: End of the Millenium" without the 4 because of this.

I personally enjoyed all of the Phantasy Star games including PS3 and PS Online even though those technically aren't part of the original series.
  • I hope they do a better job than they did with Grandia II. I've never played the DC version, but the PS2 version was buggy and full of A/V errors and slow-downs.

That being said, it was still a great game.

"I figured the incarnation of pure evil would be a little less...giggly, I suppose."

Great game, great lines. If these games are that good, I'd probably buy them even if the ports are just as badly done.

First off, Grandia II was made by UbiSoft. So who you meant by "they" is a bit confusing, since UbiSoft has absolutely nothing to do with this Sega Ages production.

That being said, I for one am looking forward to this collection, because of the first two titles. Virtua Racing was phenomenal at the time (who would've thought to apply the polygonal structure of Virtua Fighter to a racing game? Yu Suzuki, that's who!) and Last Bronx was a very underrated, but very good game. While I would rather see Fighting

  • Well I'll be glad to get the PS collection (- 3) one one disc; I have a nomad and they're fun to play on the go, but it'll be nice to be able to play them on the big screen without hooking the nomad up or pushing dropping those huge brick power supplies for the genesis into an outlet (power supplied = 3 for the base, Sega CD, and 32X).

But what exactly constitued as remake? I'd be happy with just ports. Are these ports, or are they adding small touches and updates?

Come on, they HAVE to re-release Zero Wing, with FMV, and all the original dialog. =D
  • Don't get me wrong, I love the classics as much as the next bitter, cynical hardcore gamer, but c'mon SEGA, how many times are you just going to re-release the same titles over and over? Phatasy star received a good port to the GBA last year, Golden Axe was on the DC classics collection 2 years ago (or was it 3?) and while Fanatasy Zone hasn't seen the light of day for quite some time, it was never one of the "A-titles" anyway. Just because something is old, doesn't mean that it is good. And how many times
    • I tend to agree when it comes to most classic games (milking a franchise is getting pretty tiresome.... I couldn't care less for most of the classic revivals (I do wish the Activision Anthology had done better. I'd like to have seen the update they had planned for the Xbox.)

I mean, I'm sure they'd like to make some less derivative stuff...but I guess what sells is what is made into tomorrow's games.)

But I have to say the DC version of Golden Axe was horrid. That whole disc needed a makeover badly. I
  • First, did anybody notice that AGES is SEGA spelled backwards?

Second, despite its shortcomings, Phantasy Star III was the only one I played or enjoyed. The graphics were far better than IV, and I enjoyed it immensely. I would absolutely LOVE to play it again, especially if it's updated in some way... Which leads me to...

Three. What is the point of the Ages series? I'd never heard of it. Are they doing REAL remakes of their classic games? Updated sound, graphics, gameplay, etc., but with the same storyli
  • I'm a big Sega fan, and I bought an Xbox thinking that it was the console they'd support most. Now I'll have to buy a PoS2... As much as I hate Sony.

I was hoping they'd make some sequels to Phantasy star, Shining Force, Streets of Rage, etc, but I guess this is good too.

(goes back to playing Shining Force CD)
    • Hmm...

Xbox: Panzer Dragoon Orta, Jet Set Radio Future, Sega GT, Gunvalkyrie, Soccer Slam, Phantasy Star Online

PS2: Virtua Fighter 4, Shinobi, Gun Grave, Sega Ages (Japan)

Gamecube: Super Monkey Ball 1 & 2, Soccer Slam, Phantasy Star Online, Sonic Adventure 1 & 2, Mega Collection

If you're a big Sega fan, you would have to own all three consoles to enjoy their games.
