Lowrider Game Announced, Gets Official Bounce 31

Thanks to IGN Wire for hosting the press release announcing the November release of Jaleco's PS2 rhythm-action Lowrider game, as well as the official hookup with industry bible, Lowrider Magazine. According to the release, "Lowrider simulates the American phenomenon of lowriding by putting into the gamers' hands the ability to purchase and upgrade cars, install major hydraulics and choose or create detailed artistry to compete against other vehicles in hops, dances and cruise shows" and there's a selection of screenshots on GameSpot, as well as a preview of the already-released Japanese version.

Seriosly, i have no problem with tricked out cars, but riding around in a toyota carolla with the gold package does not make you cool. Neiter does revving the 4 cylinder engine and squealing the tires in the parking lot.

Forget annoying teenager. Does it come with the hot asian or latina chicks that hang out at lowrider shows? If so, <voice char="Butthead">I'm there dude</voice>
    • It's even less impressive when you squeal the tires of an 8cyl when you think about it.
    • Not to mention the dirty looks when I ask one of those guys how he got a leafblower to power his car (usually while leaning out the window of my '69 Chevy C10). Classic!

Nothing like making your car sound like a rusty two-stroke motor to set off car alarms in the parking structure at the mall. You RULE!

    • IANAL (I Am Not A Lowrider) but I think these are more of the "classier" type of lowriders, if that's an applicable term. Not those retarded Honda Civics with the mismatched hood, "fart can" muffler, and the spiky haired asian (or occasionally hispanic) dude behind the wheel.

Instead, it's the "pimp cars" like the Lincolns and Cadillacs (occasionally SUVs, vans, or pickups, but never a twirpy Civic) with authentic bullet holes and those wierd flat-looking tires, with a scary looking black or hispanic tough

Your distasteful comment just proves how you know absolutley NOTHING about low-rider culture. If you think people are dropping their corolla's and hooking em up with hydrolics, you're sadly mistaken. It is usually American cars actually. And older classic ones....like impala's. The corolla's are more reserved for the import mod scene.

And while nothing is cool about a corolla with a gold package, revving a 4 banger after you've done some work on it can be a lot more fun than you think. Especially when that 4 banger dusts the 5.0 mustang next to you at the light. Don't make ignorant comments about a scene you know nothing about just because you feel that it is not "cool", for it is not your place to judge.

Damn right. My '71 VW bus was a monster after I put those dual Porsche carbs on it...

Seriously, "distateful comment?" He's absolutely right. Squeeling your tires in the parking lot (no matter engine size or car make) is just like standing on the hood of your car and dropping trou. "Look at me! Look at me!"

      • I've seen some really trick low riders, even some cool truck mods with hydraulics, so I agree with the your low rider comment, but...

And while nothing is cool about a corolla with a gold package, revving a 4 banger after you've done some work on it can be a lot more fun than you think.

99.9% of ricers don't do their own mods, well, performance mods anyway, unless you count seat belt covers and stickers as performance mods. No, installing some quasi-performance cold air intake with duct tape and a gall
        • Don't bother with the import mod chimps. Somehow, they've convinced themselves that eight pounds of stickers are worth 100 HP. They haven't figured out that the only high powered 4 cylinder machines that are worth a shit have half as many wheels [suzukihayabusa.org] as the base Civic. Or, like you say, a banging turbo from the factory [wrx-turbo.co.uk].

Of course, I blame the American drag race scene. The real problem is that Americans are big fans of straight line acceleration. Cars that can stop and handle aren't big sellers over here:( The ri
          • I know just what you're talking about. Back in Tucson, AZ in the late 80s I had.... a 1976 Mustang II with the 2.8L V6. I did my own brakes and tune ups, and that was it besides using quality parts. On a half-mile stoplight to stoplight run I could handle most V8s by virtue of better stopping power. They'd be way ahead and then I'd zip past and step on the brakes to stop at the finish line first. I considered skidmarks to be a concession. That kind of racing tests the whole car.

I wasn't referring to whether or not they did their own mods. Aside from the obvious lame ones...ie. 50 stickers and a huge spoiler, what is wrong with a good cold air intake? It's a good performance piece that helps the car breathe so it c

          • CAI is an efficieny mod, just like most civic VTEC motors

people think they are performance mods because it may give you a couple horse at 20 thousand RPM haha
            • "people think they are performance mods because it may give you a couple horse at 20 thousand RPM haha"

Regardless of the technicalities of the type of mod it is, CAI helps your car breathe better. You wouldn't want to be using some of the more powerful mods (slappin in a snail for example) because it would simply cause internal stress if your car couldn't breathe well enough.

          • Also, what really pisses me off is that people look down on people who get their mods installed by a shop. I'm sorry, I don't have the time nor desire to do all the grease monkey work myself. I do have money I worked hard for, and a desire to have a nicer car. So whats wrong with that?

Sorry, but I consider working on the car myself at least half the fun of having a performance car. Sure, it's a pain sometimes, but the satisfaction of blowing somebody's doors off with a car you modified cannot be beat. C

It's not his/my place to judge if/how people make their cars loud and annoying, as long as they keep it to themselves. But when they choose to make them loud in a time and place where it's annoying me (say, the parking lot of my apartment complex at 2 in the morning for example,) then it is my place to judge.

Whomever modded this up needs a serious bitch slap.

Those are lowriders...you're thinking of rice boys [riceboypage.com].

    Dear Simoniker,

No one cares about this game (see comments). It will sell very badly. It caters to the gamer who is both a car afficianado and enjoys Dance Dance Revolution. The number of people in the U.S. who fit into this category is seven. Please don't ever mention this game again. Thank you.

    yours truly,
    a friend.

Seems like this is about as interesting to the average slashdoter as the Barbie Makeup and Hair Studio.
  • I was hoping it was a game that had the lowrider jeans! That would hold your attention longer than watching a car spin its trunk around in circles.

BoxMod! Simulates all the fun and adventure of modding your PC into a translucent glowing overclocked liquid cooled bios burner!

Ring Designer! Practice that fine art of finding the perfect stone, alloy and maker for the best price and see if she'll marry you! Bonus points for knowing when to haggle each merchant down without dropping the deal!

Code Freak! Given a large pile of command line tools, solve ever-more increasing problems against the clock. Reap the benefits of abstracting prior works at the right level to make utilities useful in later levels!

Seriously, I think car mods are a dumb way to get a race car. HOWEVER, if someone wants to glue every piece of aftermarket plastic to their car and pretend, SO BE IT. Mods are a part of life at many levels, and part of people's (quite futile) Yearning To Be Different. So what?

Sure, selling a game about it is even dumber, but for fans of the concept, they'll get it for kids. I bet it took less time to develop than the manhours that'll fill up these slashdot comments.

  • I can picture the headlines now...

"It's clear to me," said Senator Joe Lieberman (D-CT), "that the youths of America are having their impressionable minds twisted by this 'lowriding' game and being coerced by game makers into terrorizing our streets.

"This only supports my campaign platform for the banning of all video games," Lieberman continued.
  • The great new game installment simulating the down to earth elite underground culture of modding computer cases. You can't rev these babies up, but you can add a geforce fx if you really like noise.
  • What is rhythm action? DDR?

BLISS is ignorance.
