World Cyber Games 2003 Results 142

jester42 writes "The quasi-olympics in eSports just took place this last weekend in Seoul, Korea. 600 players from 55 nations competed in 8 different games to find both best players and best nations. The results of each game, and a medal tally can be found at the WCG website. Germany got the title of best nation, ahead of Chinese Taipei and Korea. The World Cyber Games are held every year, and national qualifications are followed by a final. Next year's final will be hosted by San Francisco, and will be the first time the WCG finals take place outside Asia."

    Why isn't this an olympic sport yet?
    • the games aren't constant.

      it's like turning the rules of soccer(or american football) on it's head every few years. with the olympic cycle of 4 years, the games would completely change between every olympic games held. now you could become 'olympic level' in any of the games mentioned now in just few years practice, which is not possible in (most) other olympic sports.

      now, just about the only (electronic)games that would have had the longevity needed for even thinking of being added would be nethack(with

    • Because video games are not a sport. The olympics are a celebration of the world's finest athletes, of people who push the capabilities of the human form to their farthest.

      I highly doubt 72 straight hours of Everquest counts. nor does 20 headshots in a row. However, being grossly obese does push the human form... maybe being fat should be an olympic sport? America would have that one down pat.

      • how in-shape do you have to be for curling, shooting, or archery? granted, i dont think counter-strike should be an olympic sport. but, if they could create a first-person shooter that were similar to counter-strike, and the gameplay itself stayed the same even with things like graphics-increases (good open-source project, i imagine), then i think it should deserve the same coverage as something like bowling or billards.
    • One factor that will be limiting the growth of computer gaming as a olympic class sport is the continuous changes in the field. A game that will be really big one year with all the top players in it will becomes yesterday's game in just a few months, just about when the maintstream starts to learn about it and possibly become interested.

    • There are a bunch of crazy rules and polocies for a sport to become a part of the olympics... Who knows what will happen..

    I wonder if the tournament downloads, specifically Unreal Tournament 2003 recorded matches are available for download. It'd be interesting to watch.

      gotfrag.com has Counter-Strike demos (not "replays") as well as a couple of WC3 ones, don't know about UT.

      About the tournament: there was some drama, including a mass fight Russians vs. French in the hotel, a disqualification of a 13-year old Halo(?) player for using a timer, and disputes about using flashbang bugs in CS that blind an entire team when thrown into a bugged map area - American Team3D used one in de_aztec, but it was legal according to WCG rules (the team leader is a would-be lawyer), whereas

    • well the Starcraft games were available for download rignt on the olympics site. i watched them. I was not impressed. Probably good players, but not very good matches.
  • 3 RTS and 3 FPS... 1 Sports game. I'll admit to not knowing what "survival project" is.

    They need to round out the categories a bit more. Maybe a racing game, a fighter ala Street Fighter and its ilk.

    And of course they need some turn-based strategy in here. I'm probably just a big dork, but I'd rather slowly watch a 8 person multiplayer game of Civilization unfold than watch people frag each other OVER and OVER and OVER.

    • you say watching people frag each other over & over is boring? sounds to me like you dont really play cs or ut or quake, theres more to it than just fragging each other, theres strategy & set plays that come into it and fans of the game like to see new & improved strategies ^^
    • A game like civilization may be possible using a scoring system and a limited about of time. An 8 person game could take days straight, no rest.

      A game like Street Fighter, I'm sorry to say, does not have much in the skill department. You anticipate the move by your opponent, and do the designated counter move. You do a move, your opponent counters, etc. It may be key-mashing controller-breaking fun, but the outcome won't be too different than the international rock paper scissors competition. Either
      • Actually, it has a great deal in the skill department - it takes a lot of practice to memorize every single combo for every single player and the proper reaction to each.

        Of course, that says nothing about how little brains it takes. I could teach a team of cockroaches to play SF.

        You could say the same about tennis, chess, or any game of "skill". If you take the time to get past the button-mashing phase of Street Fighter, you will find that it has much depth.

    • I agree - WC3 should not be there - StarCraft is still a far more popular game except in the US. Still, you show ignorance when you bash FPS games for simplicity. While Halo is a pretty standard fare (CTF and vehicles) UT2k3 and Counter Strike are not. Personally, I think CS is an abominable game - if it weren't for team strategy in good clans, it would be unplayable IMHO - but some people are willing to look past the aweful mechanics in favour of the realism (?) money, and clannishness.

      • Total Annihilation? Man you must be old (well so am I :) )... TA just never gained popularity so I doubt it was ever considered... I haven't been into gaming recently but the only RTS game to be worthy is Starcraft. I really haven't played Warcraft III (except a bit here and there) but I don't think it belongs there...

      • IMHO, games that should have been added: Need For Speed (whichever the newest one). Total Annihilation, some sort of Instagib FPS (for raw, unparalleled twitch action).

        I disagree with NFS. If you are going to put in a racing game, at least make it a more sim-based one rather than arcade (EA took a step in the right direction with NFS: Porsche Unleashed, but then went back to pure arcadiness with Hot Pursuit 2). How about F1 Challenge (which I hear is good, though I have never played) or even Grand Prix

  • Korea's starcraft qualifiers were run poorly (Score:3, Informative)

    There is no doubt that korea is still the best gaming nation. Foreign nations were able to take 2nd (Germany) and 3rd (Canada) because of korea's bad organization. First off, they denied the two-time defending champion (Lim Yo Hwan, Slayers_`Boxer`) an automatic bid, which they had given him previously. They then ran the qualifers as best-of-1 with no losers bracket. Because of this and inherent randomness/map imbalance, many of the favorites from korea were eliminated early and only one of the qualifing players was ranked in the top 10 in Korea. This allowed Germany to pick up some points in Starcraft that they wouldn't have won otherwise.

  • We got no problem calling it Taiwan all the other times, so why not now ;-P
  • Wohoo, Sweden at least one the CounterStrike competition. It was even on mentioned on swedish national news. (I guess we don't win that much, so we are happy with what we get)

    Kind of hard to find anything on this game (at least in english). Here's a short review [onrpg.com] in english.

    Ok. Anyone bashing SC, stfu and read this carefully. Though the game is old, or even very old, it is played a WHOLE FUCKING LOT. Don't believe me? Go log onto BNET (your choice of US gateways if you think only Koreans are playing it) and see how many people play it. Yea, it is about the SAME AS BEFORE - over 10k games usually.

    Furthermore, SC displays the following great points:
    1. It is balanced. There has been almost no RTS as balanced like this one.

    • It's been a while since I've played, but if I recall one of the more annoying problems in Starcraft were cookie-cutter build orders and rushes. One could hatch four or six zerglings and do a very signifficant amount of damage (Destroy a storage depot, a pylon, or several drones) in a small map like the ever-so-popular Lost Temple before defenses could be set up. This wasn't a big deal for Terrans since a bunker required only a set of barracks to be built, but it was much more difficult to get enough zealots

    I wonder why there are no id software games present in the games list? They always seem to be the bar of online deathmatch type games, odd they would be left out of the "World Cyber Games".
    • There was pretty huge uproar about this in the quake3 community but basicly the WCG organisation were unwilling to use any game without support from the games publishers, ie. people on hand to sort out any technical issues arrising during the tourament. Activision decided they weren't willing too (maybe as they aren't really making money on q3 atm as its quite old) and as a result q3 wasn't picked. Tbh activision aren't the people I'd want in a tech support role like that, compared to experienced q3 server
    • Because iD software in its infinite wisdom decided awhile back that they should be paid for games played in high end tournaments like this.

      Suddenly, Quake was no longer a CPL or WCG pick. Go figure, eh? They still have Quakecon though so it's not like they don't have any top tier outlets for their game.
