Thanks to Video-fenky for his weblog entry discussing Encore's PS2 military FPS, Fugitive Hunter. He explains: "By itself, Fugitive Hunter is a very simple military first-person shooter... you go through a level filled with bad guys before reaching your target fugitive. Once you do, the game shifts to a 2D fistfighting sequence (did I mention that [developer] Black Ops also did Knockout Kings for EA once upon a time?)" Since the game was dropped by former publisher Atari, and picked up by budget publishers Encore, the developers have switched things around, adding a final level with "...a network of caves where [Osama] bin Laden is hiding out." Video-fenky emphasizes: "I cannot overstate the impact of this. You are in a low-budget fighting-game fistfight with Osama bin Laden." Over at Worthplaying, they have more info and screenshots, including several pictures of the in-game bin Laden, though Video-fenky points out that "...even casual folks will likely be able to tell right off that bin Laden's inclusion is mostly a last-ditch gimmick."

  • I can't count the number of Flash games freely available on various web sites that star Bin Laden on the knuckle end of a FPS-style environment.

    The joke is OLD, and no one ever took it seriously enough to consider including it with a 'legitimate' title.

    • you're being too kind with the 'legitimate' branding. think about it, this is the kind of title thats going to sit in a jewel case in Wal-Mart next to Big Deer Hunter 9 and Bubba's Hunt Fest for $9.
      • Knock Wal-Mart all you want, but I found the Fallout 1 & 2 jewel case bundle there for $9. Sweet.
        • heh, i must admit, me too. those Dual Jewel sets rule. i got that one, as well as Descent Freespace packed with either its expansion or Freespace 2, i don't recall at the moment, but it was like $10 too.

          but, still, you know what i mean. =)
        • The two Fallout games, which I also purchased from Wal-Mart dual-jewel style, are classic games: so old that they cannot sell them for $50 anymore, but so good that it is profitable to keep selling them. I believe (not having the Fallout CDs handy) that the two games are from 1997 and 1999 respectively. If you can still buy Fugitive Hunter in 2007, I would be surprised. Unless this game turns into a cutural rallying point like Zero Wing, I doubt anyone who remember Fugitive Hunter.
      • I really cant see Walmart, or any other of the big chain stores having this on their shelves.
        It's not so much the quality of the game, it's the content I can see them getting hung up on.
        • If Walmart is going to sell any kind of FPS, it's going to be this one. The bans Walmart has put in place have always revolved around either crude language or badmouthing Walmart. I think the fact that Walmart sells a great number of U.S. flags would probably lead to them being quite happy with selling this game. I mean, Walmart customers are typically the members of society who have supported the war effort and the heads of Walmart know this. I don't see anything for them to get hung up on.
    • Nameless Nazi soldiers sure didn't hurt the Wolfenstein franchise. That said, I think it's funny that players can seek Bin Laden out and go Mano E Mano with him, which is more than, you know, OUR GOVERNMENT seems to be capable of.

      The first mission of Ghost Recon seemed to have a manhunt feeling similar to this, but I think the game was released prior to the start of the search for him.

  • He's a diabetic who is basically clinging on to life. It won't be much of a fight unless the player character is a little old lady.
    • You bring up some interesting concepts for a game. You could have the whole game revolve around bin Laden (and also make the main character diabetic as well), rather than just one level. One level you could be in a race with bin Laden to get down the mountain into town where a dialysis machine is waiting. You could have another level where bin Laden is sleeping and you're on a ledge outside his window. The objective is to drop candy into his opening and closing mouth without waking him. AWESOME!

    I can't help but wonder why the developers didn't have Bin Laden attached to a dialysis machine. Is it just me or didn't the media tell all of us that he was having kidney problems? Where is his dialysis machine??? Is it in his cave? Can you shoot the dialysis machine? Will that make blood squirt everywhere? Can you choke him with the dialysis tubes? What happens if he sticks you with his blood, do you become a terrorist?

    Just curious....
