Star Wars KOTOR Sequel Confirmed 24

Ant writes "A story over at Blue's News reveals that the June 2004 print issues of Electronic Gaming Monthly and Computer Gaming World (on newsstands in late April) will confirm a sequel to Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, and that the game is, as previously rumored, in development at Obsidian Entertainment, the developer formed by ex-Black Isle boss Fergus Urquhart."

You know, I've been stuck in BG1/BG2/PS:T/Arcanum for years. I just can't seem to get into newer RPGs. I have NWN, I have KotOR. I've managed to get through the first act of each and then my interest wanes. I think it's the lack of NPC party banter (although Carth won't shut up sometimes).

Anyway, I think this could be great. Feargus could take a game that is just on the edge of holding my interest, and turn it into something an ounce more interesting. I don't know what it is for certain, but I know that Feargus (and actually, most of the team at Obsidian) built a lot of the games I like. They may be able to give it some of the old-skool goodness that wins me over. I really hope so, because I think I might have finally exhausted all the quests in BG2.

Apologies for the nit picking, but Black Isle didn't actually make BG1/2 or Arcanum :) BG1/2 was Bioware (published by Black Isle though) and Arcanum was Troika (set up by the guys who made the original Fallout.)

Black Isle did however make Fallout 2, the Icewind Dale series and PS:T. You're right though - Black Isle games always had the best NPCs and brilliant story lines, so hopefully this is a good thing - I'd be curious to know though, how many of the original designers\artists\developers from Black Isle work for Obsidian...

I never said that Black Isle made BG1/2 or Arcanum. In fact, I never even mentioned Black Isle. I mentioned Obsidian, which has employees like Jones, Avellone, Feargus, etc. They are not all from Black Isle, and they have worked on many different games, including Arcanum, PS:T, and others.

You know, you should give NWN another chance. It's quite good. I actually played through 4 times, not in succession, but in time-staggered parallel. It was worth it to see how different the game was when played with different classes and character types.

KotOR's best sequel is itself. Play it again. Dark and Light are fun enough, the dialog and story interesting enough, that it's worth every second of your second time through.

Yeah, I finshed it on light and then got distracted for nearly three months intending to finish it on the dark side. On a whim picked it up again last Sunday, and I can't believe that I put it down for so long. I've been 'rehooked' since.

The game is just such an awesome combination of exploration and dialogue, and although the action is more laid back than what other games have conditioned me (us?) to, I still get excited by it.

However, often the game feels I'm a little too much on a 'set of rails'. As much as I don't want to compare it to Morrowind (but will anyway).

Anyway, the point I'm sort of making is, does anyone else think that the sequel should be more free? Less restrictive? Does anyone want changes to the combat system, or anything else?

Personally, the only things that annoy me a little are the inventory management, the fact that Bastila isn't as interested in a lesbian relationship with my female character (it's the 21st Century! And she practically threw herself at my original male character) and the enormous guilt every time I do something evil trying to build up dark side points. I felt sad killing wookies.

Anyway, awesome game, heaps of scope for a marvelous sequel. This can only be good news.

      I'm 'big kev' excited.

      • I agree 100% with the "rails" comment, but that's why the game is compelling. KotOR had a GREAT story. Sure, it was like downhill skiing - you could veer a little to the left or the right - you were always going to end up in pretty much the same place at the bottom of the mountain; but what an entertaining ride.

I don't want to come off sounding like some Star Wars ass-kiss fanboi, but part of what made KotOR good was that you were stuck - precisely - to those "rails" and to the story.

        I took great glee

        • Well, not voyeuristic, stuff, but I was amused how they tailor the story depending on the sex of your character. Carth seems threatened more often, and acts the goose more so than usual. Amusing. Maybe.

...and the enormous guilt every time I do something evil trying to build up dark side points. I felt sad killing wookies.

Hmm, well... I played it through, making the choices I would personally in that situation, and ended up as Dark Side as you could get.

Myself, I found it enjoyable having the two families kill each other off, persuading people to give me all their money then assasinating them for rare items, and ruling the Galaxy.

And the Wookies? Well, they just smelt bad and I got bored of running around on Kashyyk.

Hey, I'm Sith and can throw lightning 50 foot, destroy Droids by waving my hand and kill people just by looking at them. The Jedi council couldnt even tell then I lied to them. What can anything do to stop me? I think HK said it best... 'Pathetic Meatbags'.

Hmmm, come to think of it, that 'absolute power corrupts absolutely' thing... it might be on to something...

    • You can also switch allegiances (at least from light to dark) quite near the end so you can see both endings without playing all the way through twice. Is the rest of the game all that different? It looked like the dark side path was the same with more fighting.
      • Quite a lot of stuff changes, depending on light or dark.

For instance, on Kashykk (however it's spelt, ie: the wookie/forest planet) if you go light side, you can help the wookies overthrow the Cerzik Company/Empire on Kashykk. If you go dark side, you help keep the wookie slavers in power.

Actually, while I'm here, does anyone know how to kill that shapeshifter on Kashykk? The one for a bounty. I found him, beat up a few times and then he ran off and I couldn't find him again. ah, c'est la vie.
    • Full agreement here!I'm in the middle of my second playthrough now. It's strange, but I have a little trouble playing the bad guy. I know it's just a game and has no real meaning, of course, but something in me just felt wrong about helping the Wookie slavers...

Ah, well. If it means I can easily use the better Force powers, good then.
  • KOTOR was as good as they clam, due to its insuffishent details, my Plane Scape Torment had more details on screen, and the fact its 2D doesn't mean it looks worse then 3D games
  • any word on this game being released for the PS2? I have the ps2 and gamecube and really don't feel like buying another system.
  • KotOR was amazing, but it really does need the sequel. I want to know what happens after you crush the republic, how do they recover from the sith? WHAT HAPPENS NEXT?! I just hope they don't fuck it up.
  • There's not a chance of me going anywhere near a KOTOR sequel, on general principles.

    1. The first game is buggy beyond belief, with fatal, game-destroying bugs. I've learned to save dozens of times, have lost an entire campaign due to being silly enough to try to go through a portal while in stealth mode.
    2. I loved this game for the first couple of weeks, even completed the light-side. But does anyone recall the Live-enabled logo on the side of the box? What happened? I waited from September, and a few weeks
