GameOn New York Consumer Show To Debut In November

The primary draw to GameOn NY will be that it is open to the public; to facilitate this, the event will have sponsored tournaments and LAN areas. Hm... E3 in May, GameOn in November... so game publishers can hype their latest acquisitions twice a year instead of once.

Now, whether that's really a good idea... unsure.

Actually, it may very well be a pretty good idea, at least until the people behind E3 finally cave and allow a day where the expo is open to the public.

Getting into E3 is not the hardest feat in the world. Get a domain, have your friends do a few reviews, and you can BS your way into getting tickets.

I'm friends with some people who work at a retail videogame store that manage to get in year after year with just that trick. An ex of mine's older sister's college friend works for Infogrames/Atari, and has offered me tickets year after year. Some guy I used to play on a MOO with's done the same.

Madison Square Garden? OK, maybe if this proves to be successful, they can move it to Javits Center next year.

Always wanted to go to one of these shows, but never had the motivation to go to Las Vegas just for that.

How very Japanese

The Japanese have always had their trade shows open to the public like this, but it's cool to see American companies trying it out.

My question is what will they hype? Most of the holiday games will either already be out or in hype mode for holiday sales, so they'd be promoting that you can play games you can buy within a month. The months after the holiday season are empty, with only a trickle of games coming out. By the type the next round of games come out, it's E3 time already anyway.

Wouldn't it be a good idea to check if the name GameOn is already in use?

GameOn is a touring game exhibition [gameonweb.co.uk] in Europe. I visited it at the Barbican in London and at the National Museum of Scotland, and it's really great. AFAIK it get updated once in a while with the newest games (there were a couple of additions at the Scotland exhibition).
