Halo 2 Direct-feed Multiplayer Video Released 56

An anonymous reader writes "Bungie made an appearance at last weekend's Major League Gaming competition in Seattle, and they brought along a beta copy of Halo 2 for the contestants to play with. Major League Gaming recorded the games and gave some of that of footage to halo.bungie.org, who have turned it into a 122MB, 18-minute-long Quicktime video which is being distributed via BitTorrent. This is the first non-shakycam video footage of Halo 2 multiplayer to be released, and man, does it look good!"

Uh, we've just lost the picture, but what we've seen speaks for itself. The Corvair spacecraft has apparently been taken over -- 'conquered' if you will -- by a master race of first person shooter sequels. It's difficult to tell from this vantage point whether they will consume the captive earth men or merely enslave them. One thing is for certain: there is no stopping them; the sequels will soon be here. And I for one welcome our new gaming overlords. I'd like to remind them that as a trusted TV personality, I can be helpful in rounding up others to toil in their underground data mines."

Great footage, but why-oh-why did the first guy who got to play the Halo 2 beta and have his footage recorded and distributed around the world have to suck so bad? I'm waiting to see the laser sword in the hands of someone who can actually do more than run around in circles waving it like a third-string high school flag girl while he gets lit up by players whose recorded games might have been far more interesting...
  • ... now that they don't have Major League Baseball any more.

    (sorry Ichiro fans)
  • Seems ironic that a first person shooter would be called "Halo". Bungie should come up with a FPH (First Person Helper) game where you run around helping people in distress. It would be named "Horns"!

Compare statements 1 and 2, I'll bet you they both make about as much sense.

I think what he is trying to say is that the title of the game is ironic, because although you go around killing people, it's called Halo, like what an angel has on his head. The poster then makes the questionable leap of logic that Bungie would be well-served to create the converse of Halo, a first-person "helper" game entitled Horns (like what devils have) where you help people instead of killing them. While I can reluctantly admit that this makes some sort of vague sense in the most rudimentary way, what I'm struggling to wrap my brain around is in what stunted, embarrasingly awkward fashion the poster thought this type of comment would be amusing to other human beings. De gustibus non est disputandum and all that, but you really got to wonder sometimes...

Halo - worn by angels. Good.
First Person shooter - killing people. Bad.

So, to continue the contrast, a game about helping people (instead of shooting them) should be called "horns" (to associate with the devil).

        Was the joke lame? probably.
Did they reach a bit far for the joke? definitely.
Am I even more lame for getting it? absolutely.
    • The first was called HALO. The second should be called BASE.

What's that? Neither has parachutes? Damn you, Bungie!

    • Is it me or didn't you get that the game is called "Halo" because the ship crashes on a RING IN SPACE! Halo = Ring. Get it?!?
Also, the fact the Master Chief is treated like an uber savior throughout the game (a Guardian Angel per se). Angels have halos. Get it?!?

Bungie thought of the plot when naming the first game. They're probably just calling the sequel "Halo 2" so people know what it is.

This is 8 on 8 multiplayer.
Bungie has said that single player maps are better quality, for performance issues.

Also this is the beta build from E3 2004, there have been a lot of improvements since then.

Ninja Gaiden, from my experience, does not have the level of baddies swarming over the maps that a halo level does.
  • Wow... Halo2 is FUGLY.... I'm sure they're gameplay is still great... but really, what have they been working on for the last couple years? Dual Weapons? ... Sitting on their laurels and collecting money methinks.

      • Dual weapons
      • Brand-new weapons (and vehicles and maps and player models and etc)
      • Normal mapping and "real" shadows
      • Destroyable vehicles
      • Interactive, dynamic map elements (the aforementioned spinning fan, and there's more elsewhere in the level)
      • XBL support
      • A new single-player campaign (new maps and enemies and dialog and etc)
And yes, doing all that for a cutting-edge professional game does indeed take several years.
      • So basically adding/polishing some new content and adding online play (probably the most glaring - and entirely artificial - omission from the original Halo) takes several years?

I think a lot of Xbox owners are in for a shock when they discover Halo 2 is not the second coming, but rather an incremental upgrade of a briefly fashionable game, painfully constricted by outdated hardware.

        • It's an entirely new game made from scratch; the only thing ported directly over from Halo 1 would be some of the engine components (and I'm not even sure about that). This isn't Doom 2 we're talking about here.

"Entirely artificial"? Xbox Life was released a YEAR after Halo was, how were they supposed to support it?
          • ""Entirely artificial"? Xbox Life was released a YEAR after Halo was, how were they supposed to support it?"

Kind of answered your own question there. There's an ethernet port on the box. I would call ordering developers not to use it for a year just so they can gouge subscription fees an 'artificial' restriction on what can be done with the hardware.

Hm, yes a direct feed of a beta build of a console game, on the high resolution of a computer monitor, in a 20 minute video. Thats a great observation. I'm sure you're one of those people who thought Doom 3 was going to suck because you played the leaked beta a few years ago.
    • That's heavily ccmpressed video your seeing, which is what gives you the wrong impression. They also got the fps wrong while encoding making it look worse with motion.

They should have just made a five minute video with excellent compression. Obviously they're not video experts.

Look, I've been playing FPS games on the PC since Doom I. And even earlier played FPS games on arcade machines. This, the most advance Halo yet, just seems to be the same old game. What you do is pick up a gun and run run run, shoot shoot, run run run run run, shoot, run run, shoot, run, shoot shoot shoot, run run run, etc. Occasionally you get in a vehicle and drive, but then you get out and do more running and shooti

      • After thinking about this over night it occured to me that what I'm suggesting is that their be more "instruments" in the game to use AND more combinations of capabilities with those instruments.

Let's start off with your characters own body movement. You can stand and you can crouch. I think most games have that. But what about rolling or the lean dodge (like in the matrix). How about something I can do with my hands other than hold the weapon. At least Halo allows you to whack your opponent over the
    • Tribes Vengeance beta just came out, and one of the weapons is a grappling hook. You can always switch roles in Tribes if you needed to by just dropping the current weapon you have and picking up another one. Obviously some of the weapons have armor restrictions, but still. I dislike pure class based gameplay because I often switch roles on the fly depending on what is needed. Tribes offers a very high skill ceiling in its skiing ability, which lets you traverse terrain much faster than you'd expect. Bette
