GTA: San Andreas Radio and Soundtrack 67

crashnbur writes "Rockstar has updated their Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas web site with new information about the game's soundtrack and the in-game radio stations! Two versions of the soundtrack will be available Nov. 23 -- one 2-disc set of selected tracks, and the massive 8-disc boxed set! Rumor has it we'll hear in-game news and weather breaks just like real radio. Audio samples are available on the web site, and a full track listing is expected this Monday, October 18. But no word yet on Lazlow..."

Well, the game is based in the early 90s. Seeing as Maron 5's first album was in 2002, I'm going to go out on a limb and say no.
    • I think that is the most unslashdot comment I've ever read. Bravo!

Take that as a compliment or an insult. Whichever you prefer.
      • I'm only trying to maintain a balance here..

A slashdot comment would be something like
"Do you think we would get track 3 from CD4 of star wars OST special limited edition?"

Well.. it is a little pricey to license a bunch of popular songs for a game. I think I remember reading a blurb about Vice City that said they spent a significant amount of money on the tracks in that game. I got the impression that it isn't typically a developer's first choice.

..in case of ./'ing or for y'all lazy bums out there.
    Master Sounds
DJ: Johnny "The Love Giant" Parkinson

The world's smallest giant, Johnny Parkinson, takes you on a musical, spiritual and sexual journey with a sound track of nonstop classics. The giants of soul, rare groove and just a little classic funk, hosted by the giant himself. Remember, height is not a number.

    Playback
    DJ: Forth Right MC

The mouthiest man in hip-hop, Forth Right MC, brings real hip-hop to the left coast. East Coast sensibilities and Forth Right's unique brand of conspiracy theory lead you in a history lesson.

    Bounce FM
    DJ: The Funktipus

The indescribable Funktipus plays the indefinable funk. The sound that has had Los Santos partying for twenty years is now on 'The Party', on Bounce FM. The Funktipus will open your eyes to what is really happening out there.

    K-DST
    DJ: Tommy "The Nightmare" Smith

Tommy Smith, formerly with 1970s progressive rock act, Crystal Ship, has now taken up residence on the home of driving rock radio. K-DST 'The Dust' plays non-stop classic rock and roll.

    K-JAH West
DJ: Marshall Peters & Johnny Lawton
From JA to SA. The legendary Marshall Law sound system has moved from Kingston to San Andreas, bringing with them the best in dancehall, raga, reggae and dub. It's one love as Peters and Lawton argue about everything.

    CSR
    DJ: Philip "PM" Michaels

Chart topping and club friendly hits, brought to you by Philip "PM" Michaels, entertainer. New Jack Swing and modern soul from today's hottest acts. Where soul meets preppy. Philip is also available for weddings, funerals and Bar Mitzvahs.

    Radio X: The Alternative
    DJ: Sage

Finally, there IS an alternative. The home of Modern Rock. This is a revolution. Guitars, nihilistic hedonism, and telling the elder generation to go screw themselves. Nobody has done this before. We are original thinkers. We are free. Sage leads the navel gazing; she is a remarkable talent.

    K-Rose
    DJ: Mary-Beth Maybell

A broken heart never sounded so good. Country and western music broadcast from Bone County across the whole state of San Andreas. All of the biggest artists, all of the best music. With the Widow Queen of the Prairie, Mary-Beth Maybell.

    Radio Los Santos
    DJ: Julio G

Julio G breaks the sound of the streets. This is the West Coast taking over.

    SF-UR
    DJ: Hans Oberlander

Quality house music, from deep in the underground, brought to you by an excitable German. This is music for people in the know.
Being German myself, I'm currently LMAO about Hans Oberlander's accent.

Chatterbox in GTA3 was very funny, but the talk stations in VC were completely unfunny and obnoxious. Maybe they thought that being more over the top would be funnier?

It's obvious now that a good soundtrack does probably more for a game than good graphics. Everyone knows that the gfx won't be much better in terms of tech c/t Vice City as the PS2 has been pushed about as far as it can.

So it's a refreshing change that the hype around GTA: SA is about it's music and not that it has 6 trillion teraquads of polymorphic bitmaps.

    • by Anonymous Coward
Actually the game looks quite a bit better than 3 and vice did on ps2. They look better than the Xbox versions (with reflections on carhoods and whatnot).

Neither the graphics or the soundtrack are what the hypes about. It's the gameplay.
    • actually it's nice to see that the stations will be dynamic rather than just looping. Although I did like the fact that I knew what the next song would be in VC, having a more real feel is nice.
    • Um, there's a new graphics engine, much more detailed and accurate effects, and... just prettier stuff. The good thing about GTA:SA is that the game is so mind-bogglingly huge, while being essentially an updated version of two previous games, that it's impossible to focus the hype on anything. It's the same style game with more gameplay options, better music, and enhanced graphics... just to hit the general hot spots.

Something tells me i'll have it tuned to Radio X for most of the game. Rage Against the Machine, plus a DJ with an attitude? ("I'm Sage - and yes that is my real name. And if you don't beleive me you can go fuck yourself"). Oh hell yeah.
    • Something tells me i'll have it tuned to Radio X for most of the game.

It seems kind of odd- probably more people will be listening to some of these fake radio stations than listen to any single real station. If they could online enable it, they could download new songs and even have real paying advertisers, but not like they'd need that extra revenue, and better stick to funny parody ads...
    • Definitely. Radio:X (modern rock) and KDST (classic rock) for me, plus the chat station that they have yet to reveal. It just makes me think Lazlow is the talk show host...

Is it considered fair use to rip a copy of radio stations in the game to listen to it in my car? If its of the same quality as vice city's, its better than the crap in my area. The weather reports are probably just as acurate too ;-)

      • Ha, no good sir.

It's a really crappy teenybopper Punk band. You're best off not knowing about them. It's really a tragedy when a classic NIN track is ruined by people who have no idea what music is.

        • Tennybopper? Yeah, right. I haven't heard the cover in question, but it is my opinion that AFI is one of the few bands that could do NIN justice.
        • Don't be a douche bag just for the sake of making a name for yourself and your high and mighty musical opinions on Slashdot. AFI's put out six albums since 1995, and have just now started to garner quite a following. They're definitely more than a Britney Spears of punk music; sounds to me like you finally heard a song on the radio and jumped to conclusions. Shut the hell up next time.
          • Just because a band pumps out 36 albums a year doesn't automatically make them good.

Now, granted, there are much worse things than AFI, but the only way I could accept a band like AFI doing a cover of a song written by Trent Reznor would be if it was a tribute.

  • BMX, Skateboards (I hope) and killing people.

Oh and now music, so that is 4.
  • ...It will kick ass. I have the boxed set from Vice City, and it is totally worth owning. Nothing better than having that "Living in Vice City" feel as you tool around in your shitty car, trying to drift corners and wishing you had a pair of Uzis.
  • Imagine on the x-box they set it up so instead of listening to the radio off the dvd you can instead use your x-box live account to connect to streaming radio stations from Rockstar.

The playlists could be massive, the talk stations could be updated and topical, they could have live radio events where people would play at a certian time and hear exclusive interviews and what have you..

It would be a very unique use of XBL.
  • That website is about 3 times bigger then my screen. I knew I needed a bigger screen.

From what I see at the moment, i'll probably be listening to Radio X the most.
