Actually, my vote goes to Doom 1. Why? Because nothing has changed significantly since then.
The only game that has gone beyond the basic "run down the hallways and shoot things" is Metroid Prime, but that's an adventure not a shooter so let's not compare apples and oranges.
In fact, most FPS's have taken a step backward since Doom 1. In Doom, the levels were well-architected, had you coming back to areas, and were littered with excellent secret areas. Today, it's "run through area, shoot things, go to next area, repeat". Pretty sad.
I disagree about cinematic action, but surely Doom 1 is the best first person game ever made. Suberb level design and atmosphere, and truly fast-paced action with LOTS of enemies. I never expected Doom 3 to be as good, it's just eye candy to me. Nothing comes close to Doom 1 and 2.
Actually, true, I forgot about Thief. I haven't seen it first-hand, but from what I've heard, I'd put it in the same group as Metroid Prime... adventure. (That's not a bad thing. That's a good thing. Adventures are far grander things than mere shooters.)
On the other hand (and there are always a few other hands to be on, depending on your home planet), this did say cinematic action, not necessarily shooter. I don't think Thief had enough impact to define this genre, though, so I stick by my Doom vote,
Half-Life is an awesome game and one of my favorites... but come on. There is no way in hell it can compare to John Carmack's work. Doom defined the first person shooting genre and Doom 3 just keeps it going fresh.
I just played Half-life for the first time due to comments like yours. I have to say Doom3 is far more cinematic and, frankly, fun. I think I must have missed the point in time when Half-Life was revolutionary. I can imagine it was incredible at the time, but really, it aint that great anymore.
"I have to say Doom3 is far more cinematic and, frankly, fun."
Six years between the games; but you'll notice that the scene setting leading to the 'disaster' on base was identical to the Half-Life one; believe me that was groundbreaking at the time when Quake II was repeating the formula of Doom I.
I never did get hold of the Thief series or System Shock, so I can't comment on those...I'm resisting playing them now because I suspect I've been spoiled by 'Deus Ex'. I'm hoping that HL2 hasn't lost the st

The Thief series is excellent. Please support intelligent games by buying them, that will increase the chances of another game of Deus Ex quality being made. At least download the demo.
I guess it was too much to expect from a press release or what ever, but I still hoped to find something which would had been a hint that id has read some comments of their dull doom 3.
I'm not saying that I won't play it, nor am I not saying that many wont buy the expansion set but I'm saying that many wont enjoy playing it.
I'm hoping they'd come up with something more than:
Enter a room
Kill the first monster
Turn around, kill the second monster
Go through the room, looking for supplies
Kill the third monster in front of the medkit
Jump to 1.
Hoping for everyone's sake, please id use more of the potential of doom3 and concept of scary game.
Well, this game has cut screens and at least a vague plot. Kinda like porn that way.
I dont understand id. Their game engines rock, no doubt, but the games are kinda sucky. In Doom 3 there is exactly one decision to make (send or dont send the message), but that decision has exactly zero effect on anything else, except for a cut screen. There should be multiple paths, NPCs that actually do something. Choices from level 1 should effect level n, for all values of n.
Actually there is another choice. In the alpha labs, whether to use the E?? (forgot the letters) system or to use the bridge. Very small decision.
Also, there's a point where you see a scientist in a chamber, and you can either kill him or rescue him. If you rescue him, you can follow him into a room with a PDA that has information that lets you get the BFG. So there's a somewhat larger decision.
You should play it and you'll see. They have this amazing graphics engine but every room is dark as a camel's ass and you can't use the flashlight at the same time you shoot.
Essentially, it's a cheap gimmick to get you to be afraid. The engine itself rocks, but the level design sucks incredibly.
Are there any plans for Doom 4 on horizon? Any screenshots of pre-alpha concept art etc.? Even though I rarely have time to play games these days, I always track the unbelievable evolution of id games. I remember when Wolfenstein 3D completely amazed me. Then Doom likewise. Then I've heard that Quake was going to be so much better than Doom, as Doom was better than Wolfenstein. Of course I didn't believe it, but when I saw it, it turned out to be true. Those games essentially created market for consumer 3D
The one feature I wish they'd add is auto-downloading of maps from MP servers. I love id, but the fact that it doesn't even tell you the FILENAME you're missing when you try to connect to a server is really harsh. I'm hoping the next patch will fix this.
Please, id. Please. This is the one thing really holding back MP player-base expansion. We've been playing the same 5 maps for 3 months now, cause it's such a pain in the ass for clients to use new maps.
This is the one thing really holding back MP player-base expansion. Oh! so they improved the mp browser, the maps, the framerate, the weapons and the gameplay? I wasnt aware, I might try again.
I'd really like to see Carmack and the doom team move on to a totally different project. Carmack always wanted to do a "metaverse" type game. I think a MMO from those guys would be interesting at this point.
I agree. I've been saying this for years. They have great talent, and did the FPS thing... I'd like to see them try a RTS or RPG or try and break into something never-been-done before.
But no, they have to sell out and go with "what works". Blah.
I don't know about an MMO, but after playing Doom 3, I couldn't understand why id went through all the trouble to come up with a great new engine, only to use it with a very mediocre story line. Maybe they should put some money into R&D and story line. I didn't see any reason to come out with another Doom game, the first two were plotless for the most part. Atleast the first Doom was the first of its kind. Doom 3 is just another high graphic FPS game. Graphics do not make a game fun.
You can't develop a MMO with such a small team. Sure, they could do all the engineering, but the amount of content to develop is way out of id's scope. Not cause they're not good, but as some point you just need a lot of people to produce all that content.
have online co-op? Based on the original Doom 3, having two people gun down some of the monsters might be too easy, but if the game engine can support large numbers of enemies at a time then I say get it in there.
Yeesh, did you *ever* try to get into the game instead of playing it as a mindless shooter? If you actually looked at/listened to all those PDAs and video disks you find, the game has a very detailed story and some damn good voice acting. Not to mention the numerous secret stuff scattered about (which most people apparently didn't find since a lot of people claim it doesn't have any). How sad a world this is when people can't enjoy a well-made game just because they don't feel like actually *trying* to e
Yeesh, did you *ever* try to get into the game instead of playing it as a mindless shooter?
Yes, and I found it lacking. I like my games to have a story, and the story in Doom 3 was quite weak.
Deus Ex, Half Life, System Shock 2. Those were much better.
Even the PDAs were predictable. `I hear voices. I had to fix the condensor coils AGAIN thanks to the power surges from Delta lab. We're going to stockpile some weapons just in case. Just to be safe, the new code is 622.'
Yeah I agree with you to an extent. I think a number of people with the pseudo-negative reviews may just be running through th game far too quickly.
I've been playing it (still am) slowly and it's much more enjoyable than going on a 20 hour marathon gaming session, moving through the levels as fast as you can, just to beat it.
OTOH. There *are* some repetitive elements to D3 that kinda exceed the "nods to the old ways" (i.e. too many wall recess' that contain nothing but a hiding monster) that I could've
You obviously misunderstood me. I'm not referring to just story elements and such, I'm referring to what made Doom and Doom II fun, actually exploring the levels trying to find secrets or "easter eggs". Think about it, when you first played Doom, did you rush through it or did you roam around trying to find items and making sure you found every enemy? That's what people seem to forget to do these days. Of course, it would helped if Doom 3 had the end-of-level splash screens that showed how many enemies/

I was interested in the extent to which Doom 3's sales arc has followed a blockbuster movie's; even more so than most big releases (in either media) Doom 3 effectively "bought its opening weekend" with massive publicity, enjoyed about two weeks of strong sales, then dropped off significantly as word of mouth spread. Kinda like "Van Helsing" (movie) and so many others. This expansion seems like more of the same.
