Where'd Keanu Reeves? I don't remember him doing any voice acting in any matrix franchises, which is interesting. Perhaps the level of tolerance required for him to be taken seriously is too high when his voice is transferred to a video game.

Oh well. Hopefully TMO will still be 'most excellent' without him.

  • They should get a jar-jar-binks character. It would be tons of fun to pump a machine gun full of bullets into that chump.

First, I'm not trolling... I'm genuinely interested in what the interest level is for this game...

I am (or at least recently was) a Matrix freak. I think Matrix 1 is the coolest movie ever made, and I even liked 2 and 3.

I am also a MMORPG addict... having paid for many combined years of a few MMORPGs.

But, I have absolutely zero interest in this game. And, if I'm not the absolute prime target demographic for this game, I have no idea who is. And, it really makes me worry for this game's future--as I have no intention of ever playing it. I plan to be fully addicted to WoW by the time this comes out.

Anyone holding their breath for this game? And, do voice actors make a damn difference?

Did you play Enter the Matrix?

Did you think, "This would be so much cooler if I could play it with thousands of uber-loser-geeks who are playing from their parent's basement?

If not, then you're probably not the intended target audience.
      • I played Enter The Matrix and I thought it sucked.

But that doesn't mean they can't make a compelling MMORPG. Have you seen The Matrix franchise recently? Comic books, a half dozen non-wachowski animated shorts.

The world itself is full of possibility.

(donning tin foil hat) It's too bad they ripped everything off of Philip Price [marktaw.com].

I'm playing the beta, and I have to admit, before I started playing, I wasn't really interested myself. But, since I have time on my hands waiting for WoW, I figured I'd give it a shot. I am also a veteran MMORPG addict ;)

Surprisingly, it's a lot better than I thought it would be. I have to say, I really like the combat system. I can't really talk too much about it, since it's under NDA still, but I will say that I won't be surprised if they ends up being a contender at some point. Mainly because it breaks out from the traditional areas of the MMO's. The Matrix Online is one of the few that isn't set in a typical fantasy time period. Aside from space-based MMO's like Eve and Earth & Beyond, these are few and far between. With the title and the trademark, and the addition of these voice actors, I think it'll be quick to grab a piece of the cake that is the current MMO market.

    • I got into the beta, and while one should not judge a product based on experiances during it's beta phase.. this game is crap.

It's got crap for visuals.. the contant is iffy.. the fighting controls are total crap.

      Just what I noticed.
      • I saw the combat system at E3. Is it still Massively Multiplayer Rock Paper Scissors? Becuase that's what they showed at E3. (hence, your NDA wouldn't apply to revealing if it was just something that was already revealed.) You choose Fast attack, it got in before a Strong or a Throw, Throw beat Special, Special beat Fast.

Combat featured as much as 2 on 1 combat! What was pathetic was how they were talking about how the game was completely unlike anything else out there, because it was a huge city (you
        • I really don't care about the NDA, who's going to bust me for this?

Rock Paper Scissors at it's finest. Rendered in sub-GTA3 graphics. With horrible load times.
          • YES! Finally my dreams have come true!

The glory of the Matrix as it should have unfolded:

Agent Smith: "Choose wisely, Mr. Anderson..."

Neo (Thought): "Predictable Agents...he's probably going to go with 'Rock'."

Agent Smith (Thought): "Good ol' dependable Rock."

            Neo & Agent Smith: "1-2-3!"

*Neo shows paper, Agent Smith shows rock.*

Why, Monolith? You know how to make a GOOD game! Why must you make a crappy one?
    • Voice actors can make a lot of difference, not so much who they are but their ability. I haven't played the other Matrix game so I don't know if these people are any good, but if they are it will add quite a bit to the game.

Personally I'm interested in the game, but I figure I'll wait a few months for the bugs to get worked out and for the 17 million Neo clones to go away. Also since the Matrix was a movie rather than gaming phenomenon there's a good chance that they're hoping to attract a lot of non-ga
    • The interest for this game was totally killed by movies 2 and 3.
If those movies had been half as good as matrix or even antimatrix the game would have a huge following, but that was all removed. Few people could care what happens and even less are interested in playing in that world.
    • My friend got the Matrix beta a few weeks back. When I saw him in combat, I completely changed my interest in the game from "Hmm I wonder what its gonna be like" to "Boy that game sucks". I don't really know exactly how it all works, but I'm pretty sure that you get to chose some skills to raise up, which probably lead to more. When you get into a fight, you chose an attack of some sort, and an icon for that attack goes to the top of the screen. Your opponent then choses an attack, and it goes to the to

Ok so let me get this straight, your going to make "The Matrix" into a video game that takes place after the truce, after Neo's "death" and the defeat of agent Smith. So what exactly are you battling? Defective accounting programs? Rebellious AIs that don't want to ally with the humans? Michevious programming mistakes that cause the Matrix to blue screen?

    Hmmm...

    Boring?

    Yeah that sounds about right...

The whole concept of The Matrix lends itself to a vast array of possibilities. Just because you aren't working for/against Neo or Smith doesn't mean the designers can't come up with a series of stories, heroes, and villians that rival the original story.

It very much depends on how well the developers do in getting it right. Just because the Matrix universe opens itself to possibilities, it doesn't mean that those possibilities will be realised in this game. Personally, I really hope they get it right.

      Please, no vomitting at /.
For those who don't really follow this game, here's a semi-latest tidbit. Paul Chadwick [joystiq.com] has written the story for the first year of the game. He is a very talented writer/comic book guy who has done work on Matrix 1 and other comics.

To answer the parent, there are 3 factions in the game. Machines, Zionites and Exile Programs, each trying to gain control over the Matrix. Plus there is a lot of flexibility in terms of customizing the skills of your character. You could "load up" skills before starting a session and trade them with other users, just like memory disks. The more you level up, the more memory units you have, the more skills you can use. Yes, it could be boring but it could also kick serious ass.

A lot of people are tired of fantasy mmorpgs. CoH was a breath of fresh air. I, for one, hope that sci-fi based games like AO (haven't played it yet) and MxO are decent enough to sustain a good user base.
      • CoH was (is) fun indeed. I've never been able to get into AO enough to enjoy it outside of the character model variety though. Not really sure why, just seemed too generic as far as the content.

Currently, I'm still subbed to CoH, and more recently to Ryzom as well. The nice thing is that I can get my fantasy fix off of Ryzom, and then jump in to CoH for a few quick missions and a change of pace. I'm just not seeing anything from MxO to grab my attention in the same way after the movies. And, there's j

You know, I can't think of any other character someone would want to play besides Neo. I mean, really: how about security guard who gets shot to pieces number 23? Or Tryke: Dozer and Tank's dwarf amputee cousin? I'd love to be Agent Smith, but I don't think killing that drippy little wanna-be messiah would be too satisfying after the first two or three thousand times.
  • I really wanna see how well Laurence Fishburn can do as The Oracle.

  • What character did he play? I don't remember seeing or hearing him anywhere.

If you don't know who Lennix is, go to a movie store and rent the coolest adaptation ever of Shakespeare's bloodiest play ever [imdb.com].

  • The Matrix 2 & 3 sucked so badly, who is excited about this game?

Now a MMORPG based on Gigli... that would rock.

  • I would be cool if game moderators showed up as agents. I still remember those guards appearing out of nowhere in UO when it first came out, and most of the time it was a special moderator of some sort (you could tell by the armor). But there isn't too many agents, and I think it would be a nice experience if you knew every agent had a human player behind them that you had to be careful of. I would be interested in this game purely because it is not fantasy nor SWG. When is Shadowrun MMORPG coming out a

  • The Matrix Online will be free and supported by in-game ads? My friend told me this and at the time I thought it was very clever and progressive, but the more I think of it, the more I remember how tightly controlled advertising tie-ins for the other movies were, and how there were no in-movie ads that I noticed. So I'm guessing it's not true and my friend just switched to a new type of crack that day.
