Bejeweled 2 Released 53

swaptastic writes "In what seems like the year of fantastic sequels, Popcap Games has released the follow up to their flagship game Bejeweled. I am amazed that they continue to create such fun games, without relying on spyware to make money. In conjunction with the launch of Bejeweled 2, Popcap has decided to donate 1 dollar for every game they sell until x-mas to the Child's Play Charity."

    It requires ActiveX.

Firefox on a Mac here. More than half of PopCap's games don't work for me. Only the java ones (Alchemy for example).

It's all a plot to make us *nix users more productive than our Windows counterparts. ...

    Oh wait....

Hello, IE for the Mac doesn't allow ActiveX controls to run on the Mac.... thank GOD.

I'd rather be spyware free then have Bejeweled 2.

I can guarantee you that Bejeweled 2 and every one of our other games are 100% free of ad-ware and spy-ware. We hate ad-ware, spy-ware and spam as much as all of you do, and we will never go down the road of putting sleazy features like these into our games. For us it's all about making games that are fun, simple, and addictive! I give you my word that you can and always will be able safely play Bejeweled 2 and any of our other games (both deluxe and

Please forgive me, I didn't mean to say that Bejeweled 1 or 2 has ad-ware, I meant ActiveX in general. (a lot of spyware/adware is installed via ActiveX... I was just saying that since Mac doesn't support ActiveX then we don't have the same adware problems although as a result, apparently we can't play Bejeweled 2)

Though I'm kinda let down that Bejeweled 2 doesn't work on my Mac! Are you guys planning on supporting it?
    • crap indeed, anyone that goes about deploying activeX crap on the web should be shot.

      It requires ActiveX.

No it doesn't. My wife is playing it right now on Mozilla 1.7. It looks like it does require windows, however, as it made her install a Pop Cap Games browser plugin which they say works with Netscape, Mozilla, Firefox, and Opera.

That's just amazing...are you guys aware just how many copies of Bejeweled 2 Popcap is likely to sell in that time? That's unbelievably generous.

Also interesting and of note are the fact that it's basically the same game with more highly polished graphics and sound. Oh, and Scott Kim did the new puzzle mode, which won't appeal to fans (addicts?) of the original game but which will likely rope in more 'hardcore' players. Bejeweled is the quintessential casual game, the first breakout success in a sector that went from 0 to multimillion in the last five years or so.

    • There are also power gems and the weird vortex gems. Vortex gems don't happen often enough to be more than an occasional bonus, but the power gems make a significant impact on game play. Firstly, chains of 4 don't disappear completely, and secondly any unused power gems carry over to your next level. So start saving them up for the later levels :P

I used to love bejeweled, I heard about it on penny-arcade (showing how behind the times I am) and started playing like a madman. Unfortunately if you get any good at it you will find that the game sucks. You can make combinations that should keep you going, but because the timer ran out in the middle of a sound effect or animation (not sure which) the move doesn't count and your game is over. Basically every popcap game shares this problem, including dynomite. Anyone know if the people at popcap have actually learned how to program games since those days?
    • Comment removed based on user account deletion
      • I play the timed game version nearly every day on my Handspring Visor (usually while on the commode, but thats too much information so I'll stop right there). I've only had less than a handful of the aformentioned "Close calls"- and I've been playing nearly every day for 2 years. YMMV.

P.S.- this has been the only shareware I've ever purchased.
        • Having one close call is too many. Puzzle Bobble doesn't have this problem, but Dynomite, its clone, does. So does bejeweled. How hard is it to check to see if the player has removed anything from the board before declaring him dead?
      • When was the last time you played? The last time I played (Windows, Palm OS, and Pocket PC versions) There are two modes in this game. The "Easy" mode doesn't have a timer and lets you play until you can't make any more move. The "Timed" mode has a count down timer which you have to keep clearing in order to increase the time.
    • I have played the Windows version, Palm OS version, and Pocket PC version. And I am pretty good at this game, however I have never experienced the problem you mentioned. The timer actually stops during a sound effect or animation.
  • Tried this and it brought my machine to a stand-still - even after turning off the sound and high res. Really poorly developed for a seemingly simply game concept. I don't remember the original Bejewled having this much difficulty running.
  • except worse.
  • Popcap games also make one called Rocket Mania.. unfortunately my girlfriend got me onto it and I got completely hooked.

I've never been so addicted to anything in my life.. I was seriously playing it *every* spare minute I had, losing sleep and not being able to concentrate at work.. I was always seeing little fuses wherever i looked, and I was trying to get my mind to rotate them.

I had to stop playing for my own health.. so I'm not going to get Bejeweled.

Also, the other problem with Rocket Mania is that
    • I eventually quit and uninstalled it.

You know you're an addict when!!!! Seriously, this is what I have to do to stop playing a game. We had a developer that was a magnitude better than all of us at q3a, and he got so heavily into it he had to uninstall too to keep himself from playing in our daily deathmatches.
  • Has anyone had success running it under WINE?

  • Sounds dumb but the way I play it is that I just try and find the best lines possible and ... err ... thats about it.

I can't work out any kind of strategy because by the time I've thought about it, the timer is rapidly at zero.

Can anyone give me any top-tips on how to *properly* play this game well?

    Thanks!

It's a naive, domestic operating system without any breeding, but I think you'll be amused by its presumption.
