The ever popular Make Something Unreal Contest is coming to an end, and the finalists have been posted on the official site. From the post: " Epic Games announces the finalists for the Mod category for Grand Finals of the NVIDIA $1,000,000 Make Something Unreal Contest. To even make it to the Grand Finals is an amazing accomplishment for these dedicated and creative teams. To be selected as a finalist for the Grand Finals is to be the cream of the crop. "

    Epic Games announces the finalists for the Mod category for Grand Finals of the NVIDIA $1,000,000 Make Something Unreal Contest. To even make it to the Grand Finals is an amazing accomplishment for these dedicated and creative teams. To be selected as a finalist for the Grand Finals is to be the cream of the crop. Each and every one of these mods are the best of the best and worthy of play by all.

    This is a great contest and has encouraged many mod makers to create something Unreal. It also helps make UT2004 a better game.

    Alien Swarm is one killer mod. Unfortunately no one seems to play it anymore, and multiplayer was really its strong point.
    • I really enjoyed the single player of Alien Swarm when it came out. The game is great, looks great, and has the claustrophobic feeling of the Alien movies quite well. It reminds me of an old top-view alien shooter from the 386 days, but i can't recall it's name.

      Anyway, thanks for the multiplayer tip. I'll definitely have to try that.

      For me, it is lack of free time with other games and life. :(

      I played Alien Swarm first at a LAN party, and it seems to be much better suited for that kind of thing, as it's not the kind of game you can take the time to type out directions to your teammates with, unless everyone is using some kind of voice chat system, and even then, that's kinda awkward.
      • Once you get good enough at it, there are few enough maps that everyone's memorized the levels. Seriously, everytime a newby comes on it's kinda annoying because they just walk wherever they want rather than following the standard route.
        • Which is why it's really a much nicer mod for a LAN party. Much easier to get the newbies into line, and get them to stop when they're running down the wrong corridor.

          And if no one knows the maps, restarts are a lot easier to deal with, planning out the next try, etc.

    Sad that Clone Bandits [demiurgestudios.com] didn't make it to the finals. They were finishers in previous stages of the contest. And the mod is just crazy fun to play. Of the remaining finalists, Deathball gets my vote. Congrats to everyone involved in the contest... I think it did help motivate people to make some really interesting mods.

    Some of these mods are so fantastic, but the overwhelming dominance of CS, I suspect, destroys many a mod's chances of being recognized as such. Sure, not all need huge communities, but unfortunately some are so sparse it's hard to find other players.

    I'm not the only one to have noted this phenomenon.

    There's not much that can be done about it, but it's a shame. Even Quake TF at the height of its dominance didn't have the kind of crushing popularity.
