Severe Everquest 2 Downtime Over the Weekend 35

thebostonblogger wrote in to alert us that Everquest 2 experienced almost 24 hours of downtime this weekend. The development team eventually resorted to hourly updates to keep the players informed and to reduce the number of overturned cars. According to John Smedly's note there will be a period of accelerated xp gain this week to offset the downtime this weekend. Commentary available from usual suspects Terra Nova and Grimwell Online.

Severe Everquest 2 Downtime Over the Weekend

  • Is it just me or does this really make sense to anyone? Do power gamers really need to have their XP accumulate even faster so they can get to bashing the game for having no content? If the game was Eve this would be one thing but really what is the idea behind this?

It's an attempt to "make good" for the downtime. No, the game doesn't need it. This has more to do with keeping/appeasing customers today than any sort of long-term in-game economy issues.
      • I would think a better way to keep the customers happy would be to rebate everyone one day (or more) on their subscription whether they tried to log in or not. Isn't that what WoW did after they got bombarded during their first week? (WoW doesn't still have queue problems, do they?)

This seems to me like a really bad way for them to do that. If you play for a day with accelerated XP, when things revert back to normal, it could make the game seem slow to many people. The last thing you want to do in an MMORPG is call attention to the grind that many games become.

If they want to give XP to make up for the downtime, do it in a lump sum.

Also, what about the people who won't be playing during the accelerated XP time? Some of them are g

What I find so utterly hilarious about the concept is that you are making people happy by rewarding them with not having to play as much.

Aka, the game is a chore, alleviating some of that chore makes people happy. Being able to pull a situation where people pay for that is pure genius.
    • Accelerated XP gain makes no sense.

They've tipped their hand. Now, whenever anyone has an issue connecting, experiences any bug at all, etc, they will ask that their XP be accelerated. And when they don't grant it they're going to look like the bad guys.
    • A Turbine developer actually posted an idea in development on their own website for comment. What it boiled down to was this.

On a the PvP server only (though it would most likely migrate to other servers after the uproar) a NPC would be available in a dungeon at a random location so that if you found him and clicked on him you would get random amounts of experience. The amount was to be considerable.

Why are they doing this? Simple, for too long Turbine allowed the exploiters to run combat macros that it
    • One of the items that was left out of this posting is the SOE is giving subscribers 3 free days on their billing to make up for the downtime.

WoW! 24 hours of downtime?!? That's too much. If only there was another recently released game with that sort of "WoW" factor.

    • Erm, WoW was a little rough at launch. EQII was completely flawless. I have been playing EQII and have yet to open te launchpad only to find a server is down (for more than 2-3 minutes, and it's only down for 2-3-4 minutes usually when I'm not going to be playing). I have yet to have any problems with any servers, they're giving us three days free and accelerated XP gain for their downtime.
      • >Erm, WoW was a little rough at launch. No where near the "rough" that the original EQ had (downtime galore, humungo patches). Considering WoW is a new player in the field, its had considerably less downtime than EQ. Anytime a popular MMORPG is lauched, there are always launch problems. I and many others typically wait 4 days after launch to buy the game (let the dust settle). On a side note: I have played UO, DAOC, EQ and WoW. WoW takes the trophey by far. First, no other game rewards casual gamers (

      • you should try 15:00 GMT, the servers are down every day for 30mins-1hour, even at weekends

I think they did. WoW has been coughing and spluttering for three days now. It's hard to do an elite quest that takes 4 hours if the servers are unstable.

In other news thousands of individuals report suffering from blindness after walking out of their homes and seeing the snow.
  • I do not think that means what you think that means.
  • Were they trying to tell gamers to go christmas shopping instead? "You know it would look so much better if I got that new ATI card. Aw hell, I'll just get a new PC!"

Over the weekend there were scattered reports of pale, sunken-eyed zombies wandering around. Witnesses said they appeared to be in some sort of stupor and mostly just spent their time shielding their eyes from the sun and groaning something that sounded like "logginserverdown".

    • Reminds me of the Simpson's episode when the favorite TV show is canceled and all the kids come wide-eyed into the outdoors and actually play and get along with eachother in a utopian slendor.

Well, this didn't happen. The usual lot of people threatened to quit. Some people did quit, but quite a few were very supportive of the hiccup. SOE is a real company, people! Not a MMORPG running a MMORPG. Everyone expects everything to run like clockwork, but it never does because real life is random and untamab
  • What do you expect these guys to do while they can't play EverCrack? Go outside? Read a book (besides guidebooks for EQ)?

This is simply unacceptable from a MMORPG. Shocking, really. I hope someone gets fired.
  • oh, EQ2 players, don't you remember that this is SoE? They don't have adequate code control, review or testing. Why do you keep throwing money at them? If we, as MMORPG players, stop funding these mickey-mouse operations, the other MMORPGs would have to mature or die and learn to produce better games! Spent your MMORPG dollar wisely!
    • Seriously, its not going to happen. Its like when people complain about the big coperation that IS Walmart. If you stop going to Walmart, it will close. But because they are SO cheap and open 24 hours, you can't.

Like it or not, Walmart hit the nail on this one, having an affordable place to shop for ANYTHING, cheaply.

Same with EQ2. People wanted name brand EQ2! With EQ2 you get more graphics! More Quests! More BLEH!
  • I'm sure long haired, AD&D geeks in basements everywhere have hung themselves.

HAH! Don't confuse D&D geeks with EverCrack geeks.

True D&D geeks don't play MMO"RP"Gs because we realize that you can't get true non-linear, non-level-grinding gaming when a computer is in charge, for no other reason than the massive amount of fresh content you'd need constantly.

It takes a socially inept GM and a case of Mt. Dew to give you that. ;)
