European PSP Release Date Announced 37

Tom writes "Sony has announced the official release date and price for the Sony PSP in Europe. The console will be released on September 1st 2005 and will retail for £179 (249). No launch titles have been revealed at this time, but the big games from the US launch are expected along with some more European developed titles."

    249 euros , that is insane .. currently the imported models from the USA are selling for less than 250 with a game and some other goodies.
    Im sorry but that is really low , the european market should not stand for such treatment . First off considering the strength of the dollar right now.

    I for one will not stand for such treatment consider the price in the USA is 100 less.

    • Would you want to pay 250 euros for something that won't play umd movies you buy at your local store? If you don't but an EU psp, you will be stuck with US region encoding. So be careful before you think about importing!
    • Only Lik Sang [lik-sang.com] or Play Asia [play-asia.com] can help us now. I wonder how much an import price of about 195 for a Japanese PSP will hurt sales of the European version.
      • I don't think many people outside of the video game hardcore really know of these sites however. The Man off the Street(tm) will probably just go to his local Dixons or something. I'm not sure if the really hardcore gamers are going to be a large fraction of the sales really.
      • Lik Sang are quoting a reduced price of 135UKP (195 Euros) for an import, which makes me wonder what the japanses street price is? Can anyone with a better grasp of Japanese than me and my browser tell us the street price for the 'Standard Pack' in yen?
      • Even better, not only can you get them by the shovel full via eBay or the likes of Lik Sang, but you can get them here in London in the high street (PSP avalible on Tottenham Court Road, primary home in London to gadgets and imported electronics gadgetry). Several people in the office have considered getting one, but all assumed it would be released in the UK within a month or two. I was going to wait till ~June to get a localised one, but if they are not going to bother to ship til Steptember I'll just pop
    • Not to mention that in japan it costs the equivalent of 180USD, so compared to the japanese your getting raped with a wire brush.

    I mean, it's so nice of you to finally grace us, unworthy Europeans, with your magnificent PSP only nine months after it's launch in Japan. We thank you for your benevolence. We know how hard it is to release things in Europe, we are hard to find on a map, and the road is often closed due to rockfalls, and we are thankful that you are doing your all the make sure we get your newest system as fast as possible.

    Living in Europe sucks sometimes. Frankly, if I had the money, I'd just import a US or Japanese model instead. It would be cheaper anyway... I don't care about region coding, as long as the games are region free, I can just rip my own media to memory cards.

    Nintendo also screwed us, we got the DS several months after everyone else as well, although not as long as the PSPs delay. Their insult was just the fact they had a near simultaneous launch in North America and Japan.

      • No, as I don't have enough money I won't be buying it at all, at least until I get some more money together. But when I get some money together, I'll probably import one, seeing as it'll probably be cheaper.

      I feel your pain. I bought a DS in the U.S. over christmas while visiting family (I live in France), but lets be realistic. For the European market, they have to localize the software and packaging into at least French, German, Spanish, Italian, and British (voice actors). It's easier, both resource-wise, and financially speaking, to release to the biggest single-l

      • Yeah, I know it's all about the games market and localisation and stuff. But that doesn't stop me complaining about it. I'm unreasonable like that. ;-)

        I don't think many games have their voices redubbed (or text changed) from American to British English however, we generally get American voices and spellings.
      • Actually in North America it's three languages, ie. English/French/Spanish. Sometimes they get away without Spanish, but they have to at least do French localizations of the packaging and instruction manual so they can sell in Canada.

      Japanese DVDs have the same region as Eu; not sure if that's true for PSP as well. But as you wrote, who cares? I never intend to buy a UMD movie in any case.

      I can say that JP PSP works fine with US games though. JP PSP can play against US PSP in WiFi if both uses US games. (I don't know anyone who has a US version of a game for which I have JP version so I haven't tested that.)

      They were supposed to be released together, but allegedly Sony postponed the Euro release so they'd be able to manufacture/ship more units to the US for the stateside launch.

    • The DS took less than 5 months from earliest world release to euro release, while the psp will take 9 months. And the DS costs about the same in the rest of the world and the EU, while the PSP costs about 30%-40% premium in the EU compared to the rest of the world. I'd say there is a huge difference between the two, and the nintendo situation is hardly screwing you unlike the psp situation.

    led me to believe it was coming out *just* after the DS. They couldn't have been doing that on purpose could they? To try and screw over the DS launch?

  • When it comes to video games Australia gets screwed over a lot... sometimes were not even made aware of release dates and things just randomly appear at stores...

    I know we use PAL on our TVs but it doesnt mean we liked being classed as europeans!

    But what the hell is gonna happen when Australia becomes a republic?!

    • Australia & New Zealand are listed as one of the countries on the European site (yourpsp.com), and from what I gather the release date will be the same for Australia. I guess we should be happy we even got that small bit of information :)

      More importantly, I wonder whether the cost will be prohibitive. A price tag over AUD$300 might see a very lukewarm reception. I still expect to see an aggressive marketing campaign late July, mid August (strangely enough, right around the time of my birthday :D)
      • Err, hate to reply to myself, but I mean to clarify: the price tag they quote is AUD$430. This seems incredibly high compared with the price one could get by importing (slightly over AUD$300). Hence I foresee slow uptake on release date.
        • Bloody hell none bar the most sony addicted fanboy would buy one, its far too high for the general non-nerd population too high for most nerds even. Never mind what other bells and whistles it does i could get 2 of the current generation of consoles for that price alone.
    • More importantly, do we even have a release date for Katamari Damacy yet? Not to mention the sequel.

  • Generally, these sort of things sell less than in the US and Japan. Which is odd, because I figure if the PSP sold any less than it did in the US, they'd be into negative sales. And I don't know how that works yet.
