Toontown Online Goes Big Time

Disney's ToonTown Online is finally getting a day in the sunshine. Gamespot is reporting that Sony Online Entertainment is going to be publishing the game commercially, both for the PC and console systems. From the article: "The boxed version of the game will retail for $19.95, which includes a two-month subscription to the $9.95-a-month service. Toontown has been available directly from the game's official Web site since June 2003."

F/OSS games aren't often published and/or marketed. As a result, they get far less Slashdot airtime. Does this seem strange to anyone else?

Over the last two years I think a grand total of one open source MMORPG [slashdot.org] has been reported on Slashdot. With coverage like that is it any wonder that no open source MMORPG project has managed to attract a critical mass? Of course, it's not like these projects go out of their way to advertise themselves either.

I hate to say this but a lot of F/OSS are either derivative or simply not very news worthy in the way that HL2, the Sims or GTA:SA are (technical or gameplay innovation or else some sort of social phenomenon associated with them, this is particularly true of the Sims for example). This isn't to say FOSS games aren't fun to play, theres just not a lot one can really say about a FOSS version of Civilisation or an old arcade game beyond announcing them. Certainly though, by the same token, I have no idea why c

This is not surprising. The amount of people (kids) playing this game has been steadily increasing, especially as parents start to actually worry about what their children are playing... as http://www.mmogchart.com/ [mmogchart.com] shows... its recently surpassed 100,000 subscribers, twice as much as AC2 had even at its peak... and its still in that 'growth' area.
