Warhammer Online Beta Application Now Open 47

Eurogamer reports that applications for the Warhammer Online Beta are now open on the official site. The Beta will be open for both American players as well as folks in the EU, and each have their own site available for signup. We had a chat with the Warhammer team late last year, which should give some insight on the game. Eurogamer as a hands-on preview available from January, if that's more your thing. "'Empire is a world about the End of Days,' bellows Paul [Barnett]. 'A world on the brink of extinction. No matter what they do, the Humans must keep fighting or they'll all die. Breed and fight, expand or die, that's all they can do.'"

To join the beta test you simply have to fill in a few forms and register on the site. But don't be too hasty, because you'll need to upload your system specifications, which requires you sitting at the computer you want to play the beta on.

The beta registration requires you to submit information from DxDiag.
    • yeah.. which is annoying, because i dont intend on installing windows quite yet..
from their point of view though, it's an excellent idea, since they can make sure that they get a good spread in the testgroup.

  • Signed up me and the wife, hopefuly we can get through. Sorta sick of Blizzard, and this looks promising. Gaming is something me and her can sit down at the end of the day and do together. Basic days for us is: wake up, work, come home, go to gym together, come home and I cook dinner, we sit down and watch a movie and eat, then get on the computer and play a game together, 'get busy', then clean up and sleep to start it over again.

Not a perfect life, but through the work week, keeps us busy and in shape :

Since the article only contains the European beta site links, you will find the North American sign up site here: https://betacenter.eamythic.com/signup.php [eamythic.com] After signing up there, you confirm your e-mail address (GMail dumped the e-mail into my Spam folder, fyi), and then upload your DxDiag info.

Most Warhammer fantasy players sell their armies and buy cocaine, as it is a cheaper habit to support.

I can see it now: You wish to create a second player alt? That'll be $40, thank you.

EA/Mythic are going to make a huge amount of money off of this once it goes retail. Why don't they pay us $20,000 a year (since we'll be telecommuting) and give us benefits (health/dental insurance)? The beta sign up process is like a typical hiring process.

Out of principle I stopped writing and left the site when I saw that they wanted me to write in 1000 characters or less "why I wanted to beta test their game." They know damn well that most people want to play because it is free and a way to pass time. It is a question that doesn't need to be asked.

So to anyone who is still signing up, you have one less person to compete with for this lucrative unpaid intern position. Enjoy.
    • You gain early access to the game, for free in exchange for you giving them feed back.

      It's a win/win situation for all involved.
    • If you feel you should be paid for playing their game, you are the exact opposite of their target customer (who will want to pay to play). Seriously, if you aren't willing to write a few words to beta-test a game, you probably aren't willing to buy the game either.

Open beta testing amounts to playing the game and giving feedback on it. Its not substantially more "work" than if the game were released, except you're not paying for it. And the fact that you can't muster the effort to write a paragraph or two indicates that you'll be a terrible candidate when it comes to holding up your end of the bargain and actually providing usable feedback for them.
        • The fact of the matter is that the vast majority of bugs are specific to system configuration. Developers want tens of thousands or preferably even hundreds of thousands of beta testers mainly so that (nearly) all system configurations can be tested. By beta testing software you are not "working for free", you are instead confirming that the software runs bug-free on your particular system setup. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_halting_problem [wikipedia.org]Th e Halting Problem proves that it is impossible for all errors
          • >>The Halting Problem proves that it is impossible for all errors to be inherently predicted and therefore bug-free

With the danger of going off topic, the halting problem does not state that you can not prove that Warhammer is bug free. It just state
that there exists some software, for which it can not be proven.

The problem is that even if a prove exists that Warhammer is bugfree, it is VERY VERY difficult to produce that prove, so testing is the only

              "

Sorry, that's what I meant, even the stuff within their control can only be verified through detailed application-specific examination and then there's all the stuff they can't predict (e.g. closed-source/unreleased drivers). Looking back at my post now,

no kidding. it took me three drafts to get under 1000 characters. at least they have a field for it, so i don't have to sneak in my essay in the dxdiag.txt like i usually do!

    • Well, it's always possible, but so far EA is acting out of character with the Mythic acquisition.

    • The game is being designed for huge battles. As in hundreds of people vs. hundreds of people. You can't massive battles with Crysis graphics.

Also, I think they're taking a note from WoW here. Most gamers don't have bleeding edge graphics cards. Most of us are still duking it out on 128MB or 256MB cards. Some even with 64MB. There's a much larger potential market for your game then. For example, I didn't even bother trying Vanguard because I heard it was a slideshow on even the good systems. They

Some great new games in the works and Blizzard may actually start to feel some heat. Someone's gotta convince them to end the EQ1-model gear grind.
    • Agreed. I'm especially excited because DAOC had the best endgame of any MMO. Period.

The problem with DAOC was that it followed the EQ model up until the end game (aside from the frivolous diversion of the battlegrounds of course). It sounds like with Warhammer they're trying to make the whole game more like DAOC's end game. If they succeed, this game will be unimaginably great.
