Street Fighter IV Officially Announced 81

Along with the announcement of the new-for-modern-consoles Bionic Commando, Capcom has also officially revealed the existence of Street Fighter IV . Other than the fact that it is in development there aren't a lot of details on the game, with little more than a gameplay-less trailer to view. Gamespot reports: "The trailer depicts longtime rivals Ken and Ryu duking it out once more, this time in a moonlit forest. The two friends and frequent rivals exchange, block, and parry blows for about a minute, busting out such familiar moves as the hurricane kick and dragon punch. With neither fighter gaining the advantage, Ryu charges up a fireball that bathes the screen in white before the Street Fighter IV logo appears with a splash of blood, followed by a warning to 'Prepare yourself.'"

    Is it RHY-oo or REE-oo?
    • I believe it is in fact pronounced "roo". But I don't care and I still pronounce it "rye you", because it sounds cooler IMHO.

RYE-you is what you call him if you've never spoken a word of Japanese if your life. It's pronounced REE-you. How would you pronounce Kyoto? KYE-oto? No, it's KEE-yoto. Ryuho, Ryosuke, Kyo, all the same way.

        ree-you.

The "ee" sound is slightly abreviated.

        • by dintech ( 998802 )
Yes, that's the correct pronunciation. My girlfriend's brother is called Ryu and she told me the other night that it means 'dragon'. The same name in mandarin is Long.

As long as I'm not listening to Jean-Claude Van Damme [imdb.com] pronounce it, I don't care.

It's ree-OO, the Japanese word for Dragon.

It's a very difficult pronunciation for non-native speakers. It is actually pronounced something similar to "dew" but with a softer R-like sound than the straight D. The Japanese is phonetically spelled out as:

      RI(yu)U

So the (yu) would modify the RI sound. There is a straight RU sound, so there is still some I sound left after the (yu) modification.

I still say Rye-yu though, because otherwise no one knows I'm talking about.

I have found japanese is really hard to say for english users. Me as a native spanish user, japanese i really easy to say as we practically say it as we read it in romaji.

Of course, english for spanish native users really suck, you just can't give the "latin" accent unless you go to classes to fix the dictation.
        • by Abreu ( 173023 )
Indeed, all the vocal sounds in Japanese are the same as in Spanish.

Likewise, a japanese friend of mine tells me that it is way easier for him to speak Spanish than English.
      • The best explanation I've seen for how to pronounce the Japanese R is as follows:

        1) Place the tip of your tounge against your palate just above your upper teeth - this is the same position it takes for an L or D sound in English
        2) Make an R sound

I've heard of it as being described like the Spanish R but without a trill.

In any case, the Japanese know what you mean if you pronounce your R's the English way. Ryu is a single mora in Japanese, so in English pronounciation its like Roo with a little 'ee' sound a

I would like to add it is also like "Do you", but pushed together..like "dyu", since the Japanese R sound is actually a cross between an R and a D.
      • by alexo ( 9335 )
Is it similar to the Russian ""?
        • by alexo ( 9335 )
          Where did it go?
There were supposed to be a Cyrillic "R" and a "yu" between the quotes.
          Does /. strip non-english characters?

I really liked the old-school side-only view of Street Fighter.

It just seemed more playable. And fun.
    • by dryueh ( 531302 )

There's nothing to suggest that this new one will be any different. A FMV doesn't mean that the playable game will look anything like the teaser trailer.

In any case, I, along with most other SF fans I've heard chime in, are with you.

  • I was hoping for Street Fighter III Hyper Turbo Championship Edition.
  • There were only three capcom fighting games I liked. SF II; SF vs. X-men; Marvel Super Heroes (based around the Infinity gems). When the SF: Alpha mess got all cartoony, I called it quits.

Akiman announced years ago that Capcom Japan had sold off the Street Fighter license to Capcom USA, and that his team was no longer working with it (other than I believe to complete Hyper Street Fighter II, the commemorative anniversary remix game). I have very little faith in Capcom USA, who now own and control the license to all things Street Fighter. While nothing about the game except the inclusion of two characters (one of which whose face was very oddly designed) can be learned from the trailer, Cap

Street fighter was a technical game, most of the best fighting games are technical games FFS... why would you want a game that required no skill? As far as I'm concerned after SF2, the addition of 50 different versions (hyper fighting, super street fighter, etc, etc) was the problem. They should have just done what good game d
    • made the mediocre Super Dragonball Z... And StreetFighter III played fine if you weren't hardcore. Yeah, the parry system was useless to you, but it was still loads of fun and a joy to watch. Hell, try playing GGX or SoulCalibur or (*shudder*) King of Fighters XI against a tournament grade player and it's brutal. If you think you need to be hardcore to play SFIII, you don't play a lot of fighting games...
  • I hope Capcom remains faithful to the 2D gameplay. I'm not against full 3D characters, however, if they take an approach similar to Nintendo's New Super Mario Bros on the DS. We're at a point with 3D graphics where characters can be made detailed enough that they could pass for 2D sprites. And this way we enjoy the benefit of extremely fluid animation.

If they do go with 2D sprites I hope we get high-resolution artwork with animation on the level of a good anime. But given the considerable amount of producti

  • It's hard to see how they can move SF forwards now. A lot of people still play SFII in Japanese arcades, but for fighting games Guilty Gear has mostly taken over. GG is the antipathy of SF in just about every way. Movement is extremely fluid, moves don't mirror each other, combos do less damage the longer they go on etc.

SF experimented with various gimmicks, but in the end hasn't really changed much since SFII.
