Sonic The Hedgehog Coming to the iPod 51

mrneutron2003 writes "Sega has announced that Sonic the Hedgehog will be a new gaming option on the iPod. They're looking to charge about 4.99 for the classic title. 'Support is slated for the iPod nano with video, iPod classic, and fifth generation iPods ... Sega hopes that tremendous install base of the iPod family will lend to exposing a whole new audience to the old time wonders of Sonic The Hedgehog. The game has apparently been redesigned with the iPod in mind and should provide good port experience.'"

That's not exactly going to have a very good control system, most likely, I for one would like to at least press two buttons at the same time to move and jump.

I Think it could work. Hold your finger at the top of the wheel, that's neutral position. Slide to the right, sonic goes right. slide to the left, sonic goes left. With your other hand, slide you should be able to stick your thumb in place to press the click button. It may not be optimal, but I could see it working well. I'm not sure if this is the control scheme that they are using, but that's just what I thought up in the first 30 seconds. I'm sure somebody who was being paid to make the control sch

I own PacMan on the iPod, and you don't need to slide, you just need to touch the direction you want to go. My guess is that you'll run in whatever direction you touch, if you let up on the click wheel you'll stop, and touching either the menu or play keys will cause you to jump. Pretty simple control scheme actually.

Yeah, I only have 3 games for my iPod (Solitaire, Circle Arkanoid, iPod Quiz) because those are the ones that came with it. So having not much experience with iPod games, it's the first thing that popped into my head. I like your solution also. Sounds a little simpler than mine. Here's a better idea, that nice little plug on the bottom where you hook up the USB cable would be perfect for plugging in a secondary controller that could be used for games. If somebody put out one of those for the iPod, I th

that isn't a bad idea.. when you said the controller attachment - i first tought what Nintendo could do with that.. and porting their games over.. just got to make sure it isn't power drain.. but they are good with that already
            • The controller could even have it's own battery if it proved to be too much of a power drain on the actual iPod.

true true true.. although that seems more like a bandaid than a solution.. the controler (depending on how it is setup to interface) shouldn't use any more power than the touch wheel does.. i don't know if they have the ability to power off that part - but make it so that when the "game controler" is connected the touch wheel is turned off.. although then you limit function ality.. still an itresting idea...

Nintendo could do a lot (they got offers to port Super Mario Bros to the IBM PC, Amiga and C64 but refused*) but that doesn't mean they'll want to do it. Nintendo has its own line of (really popular, by the way) handheld gaming systems and they're probably more interested in selling more of those than getting a few bucks from iPod owners (especially since the games they could just port on the iPod couldn't be sold for much).

Will it be as fantastic a port as Sonic Genesis for GBA? And by fantastic, I mean god awful.
  • Hopefully it won't be as awful as the GBA port of Sonic was. Damned glitches up the ass.
  • If I have developed a working PC-based prototype of a game that I think would work well on an iPod, whom should I contact to get it ported? The iPod Games page for consumers [apple.com] doesn't appear to have any links for games developers to use. Nor does the iTunes Store feedback form [apple.com] have "Request a Game" in the "Request Type (required)" menu. Or is Apple dealing only with publishers of comparable market capitalization to, say, Disney?

They have hacks so you can play MP3s on your game boy, and they have video games on your iPod...

So, do I get a portable Video Game Music Player, or a portable Music Player Video Game?

    The lines are blurred.
    • by Yvan256 ( 722131 )
They also have a cart [nintendo.co.jp] that allows you to play MP3 tunes and MP4 videos on a GBA SP/micro.
    • the lines are not blured, the gameboy/DS both kind of suck at mp3s and I can't imagine the iPod will be any better at Sonic than the gba is at MP3s.

Get a PSP. It does music, movies, web, rss, games and now also internet radio (just added with last update). With a custom firmware, it can do all of the above and also remote control your TV.
  • Wonderful, so they're making an iPod game that I beat way back in 1991, and has been ported anywhere that will take it. So when is Sega going to make a NEW Sonic game that doesn't suck cock?
  • Yeah, of course the only things I miss while playing Sonic are a slow display and clunky buttons.
  • Otherwise I don't think a feat like this would be remotely possible with the one action button ipod, no?

Rockbox is free open source firmware for DAPs that allows you to play Doom! Granted the frame rate is a little juddery and the controls aren't laid out perfectly, but who cares? It's Doom! On an ipod! Every geek on slashdot should be drooling at the thought!

I supposed I should also point out at this moment that Rockbox also supports, among many, many other things:

-Voice driven menus for the visually impaired
-A gameboy and gameboy colour emulator
-Over 15 sound codecs, including ogg and flac
    -Gapless playback

  • It seems to work ok, I've only played it for about a minute. But I can say, that I wish I had bought the Applecare plan - my clickwheel isn't going to survive this game. ;-)

You click (and hold) right to run right, click and hold left to run left, center button jumps. Touch "Menu" to look up, touch play/pause to crouch. It's a little awkward, but I think I'll get used to it.
